2. What were the modifications made?
3. How did you like the flow of the story? Why?
4. Is the movie adaptation entertaining and intellectually stimulating? Why?
5.Provide your recommendations on how to improve it.

I chose the film “Crazy Rich Asians” directed by Jon M. Chu. This film was based on the novel by
Kevin Kwan bearing the same title.

“Crazy Rich Asians'' tells us the story of Rachel Chu, a Chinese-American professor from New
York and her journey about finding out about her boyfriend’s insanely wealthy family in Singapore.
This romantic comedy film relays its story filled with humor alongside showcasing the glamorous
lives of filthy rich Asians, making sure to entice its audience with it. Still, it remains to keep its
grounding to reality by emphasizing key moments in the film that relays its true message.

The film made sure that it stays close to the depictions mentioned in the novel by bringing almost
every detail of it to life. I believe there were not many modifications made as the director wanted
the film to be as close to the novel as possible. However, I noticed that they lacked emphasis on
Rachel’s (our main character) skills when it came to game theory. In the book, we get a deeper
glimpse on how Rachel taught game theory in her university and we see her actually in her
element as she analyzes the games she plays with her students. This moment was rather
short-lived in the film. I see this as a missed opportunity as the director needed this to highlight
her final scene with Nick’s mom as they play mahjong while breaking it to her that she’ll leave
Nick. They could’ve used this to build up context and make her mahjong win against her
boyfriend’s mother make more sense in a metaphorical way. Additionally, it felt like our main
character was robbed of that recognition as well. However, I believe that this part is only a minor
modification and rather focused on that detail alone. Regardless, the movie and Rachel’s
character still works the same way despite that modification.

I tend to overanalyze films most of the time but to my surprise, I actually liked the way this movie
conveyed its story. The story flow was easy to catch up with and is not likely to confuse its
audience. I believe it flowed the same way it did in the book too. For me, this movie adaptation
was both entertaining and intellectually stimulating, especially for those who have a flair for
fashion, which I noticed is something that they put a lot of work into for the film (which I really
loved). It was entertaining in a sense that it knew how to balance humor and seriousness in the
film yet still retained that grounding it had with reality without overdoing the storyline. It was not
something that was just made for the sole purpose of entertainment but also to actually convey a
lesson— that we should never judge a book by its cover (as cliche as that may sound).

I don’t exactly have many suggestions for its improvement because I really think that it’s done its
job as a film. I guess what I’m saying is I believe this movie did the book justice. It paid respect to
the author’s actual ideals and messages in the book and applied most, if not all, of them in the
film. It’s not perfect compared to other films, but it’s already good on it’s own.
