Statistical Techniques (Part II)

Activity 1: Test the Relationship
Directions: Analyze the given situation and follow the instructions below.

Ms. Maria is a Practical Research teacher who wanted to investigate if the number
of hours spent by students in studying has something to do with their achievement
score.  Ten students were randomly selected and were asked if how many hours they
spent in studying before they took the exam in Practical Research.  To determine
students’ achievement score, the teacher administered a 50- item exam which was
validated by experts in the field of research.   Below are the scores of the ten students.

Use Pearson’s Product Moment correlation coefficient (r) to find the relationship
between the independent variable (hour spent in studying) to the dependent variable
(achievement score).

x mean: 2.45
y mean: 29.5
r= 0.71057767
1. What is the value of r (refer to activity 1)? r= 0.71057767
2. What is its corresponding degree of relationship? Since our r value is
greater than 0, it indicates a positive correlation.
3. Since you already know the value of r and its corresponding degree of
relationship, what is the connection of hours spent in studying to the
achievement score of the students? Our r value of 0.71 indicates a positive
correlation, meaning that the hours spent studying has a close
relationship/effect to the achievement score of the students.

Activity 4: Test the difference!

Directions: Analyze the problem carefully and provide your answer on the questions that
follow.

The researchers would like to enhance the skills of 21st century learners through a
strategy that uses software application which fits their learning style. Two classes with
the same capacity to learn were used as the respondents of their study. The first class
was taught using the GeoGebra app while the other class was taught using the traditional
method. The researchers gave a 30- item achievement test after exposing the two
classes with different methods.

Hypotheses of the study are presented below while the achievement scores of the
students and the result of t-test using Microsoft Excel are found on the next page.

Null Hypothesis: There is no significant difference between the achievement of the

students who used the GeoGebra app and traditional method.

Alternative Hypothesis: There is a significant difference between the achievement

of the students who used the GeoGebra app and the traditional method.

Answer the following:

1. The p-value from the t-test table is 0.04 while the significance level for social
sciences study is 0.05. The decision rule is to reject Ho if the p-value is ≤ α.
Substitute the value.
Decision rule: We reject Ho since 0.04 is less than our alpha value of 0.05.

2. What is the conclusion of the study? This study’s conclusion is that there is a
significant difference between the achievement of the students who used the
GeoGebra app and the traditional method.
