ABSTRACT

RAMIREZ, ROLIX M. Davao del Norte State College, New Visayas, Panabo City,
June 2022 “DIETARY EFFECT OF VINEGARS ON THE GROWTH
PERFORMANCE AND SURVIVAL AFRICAN CATFISH (Clarias gariepinus)
FINGERLINGS”

Thesis Adviser: PROF. MICHAEL B. ANDAM

Vinegars or their salts can be used as growth promoters in aquaculture.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary vinegar
supplementation on the growth performance and survival of African catfish Clarias
gariepinus fingerlings. Twenty-five C. gariepinus fingerlings (average initial weight
of 0.611g) were randomly distributed into nine 10-L capacity plastic basins. Groups
of fish were fed diets containing 2% of either apple cider vinegar (ACV), coconut
sap vinegar (CSV), and a diet with no vinegar (i.e. a control diet). After 45 days, all
fish fed with diets supplemented with vinegars exhibited significantly higher final
weight (FW), weight gain (WG), and specific growth rate (SGR) than those fed the
non-supplemented control diet. The ACV group exhibited the significantly best FW
(2.287±0.062 g), WG (1.676±0.062 g) and SGR (2.932±0.060 %/day). Feed
conversion ratio and survival rate was not significantly different among all
treatments. The researcher suggested to conduct research using Treatment 3
(commercial feed supplemented with ACV). Use of different concentration of
vinegars to evaluate the growth performance of C. gariepinus fingerlings.

Key words: acidifier, apple cider vinegar, coconut sap vinegar, organic acids,
growth performance, growth promoter
