“UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Philippines”

Lesson Objectives
At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Identify the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Philippines.
2. Know the importance of heritage tourism as part of a country’s tourism potential.

It’s no surprise that the Philippines is on everyone’s bucket list of must-visit countries. The
country has so much to offer from pristine beaches and natural wonders to historical and cultural sites.
Whether its century-old structures, breathtaking mountains, thriving coral reefs, or the UNESCO World
Heritage Sites Philippines, indeed, is full of places everyone just has to see.

The recognition greatly helps identify Filipino heritage sites that highlight our culture and the
wonders of nature. But more than giving an identity, it also helps in the preservation and protection of
these man-made structures and natural wonders.

What is UNESCO?

UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. It seeks to build
peace through international cooperation in Education, the Sciences and Culture.

UNESCO has a unique role to play in strengthening the foundations of lasting peace and
equitable and sustainable development. Advancing cooperation in education, the sciences, culture,
communication and information holds strategic stakes at a time when societies across the world face
the rising pressures of change and the international community faces new challenges.

World Heritage Site

• any of various areas or objects inscribed on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage List. The sites are designated as having
“outstanding universal value” under the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World
Cultural and Natural Heritage. This document was adopted by UNESCO in 1972 and formally
took effect in 1975 after having been ratified by 20 countries. It provides a framework for
international cooperation in preserving and protecting cultural treasures and natural areas
throughout the world.

Three (3) Types of Site

There are three types of sites: cultural, natural, and mixed.

• Cultural Heritage Sites include hundreds of historic buildings and town sites, important
archaeological sites, and works of monumental sculpture or painting.

• Natural heritage sites are restricted to those natural areas that;

- (1) furnish outstanding examples of Earth’s record of life or its geologic processes,
- (2) provide excellent examples of ongoing ecological and biological evolutionary processes,
- (3) contain natural phenomena that are rare, unique, superlative, or of outstanding beauty,
or
- (4) furnish habitats for rare or endangered animals or plants or are sites of exceptional
biodiversity.

• Mixed heritage sites contain elements of both natural and cultural significance.

1. Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary

Location: Davao Oriental

Year inscribed in UNESCO: 2014
Type: Natural

This mountain in Davao Oriental is home to 1,380 threatened and endemic species of animals
and plants. One exciting thing about visiting Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary is the sightings
of rare animals such as the Philippine eagle, the flying fox, tarsier, and civet.

Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary is an important environmental treasure and the
only heritage site in the region. Among the mountains of Davao Oriental, Mount Hamiguitan is dubbed
the province’s “crowning glory.” Towering at an elevation of 1,637 meters above sea level, this
mountain is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna species. There are also several endangered and
endemic species found within the sanctuary.

According to UNESCO, among the top reasons for Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary’s
inclusion in the list of heritage sites in the Philippines is because it represents a complete, substantially
intact, and highly diverse mountain ecosystem, in a significant biogeographic region of the Philippines.

2. Church of Santo Tomas de Villanueva – Miag-ao, Iloilo

Location: Miag-ao, Iloilo

Year inscribed in UNESCO: 1993
Type: Cultural

Built in yellow-orange sandstone, the large fortress-church of Miag-ao was completed in 1797.
It served as a fortress against raids of marauding Moro pirates.

The church is amazingly beautiful because of its two asymmetric pyramidal towers and its finely
sculptured, yellow sandstone façade. Its façade’s carving is the pinnacle of Filipino naïve art, in which
craftsmen abandon all restraints to interpret Western decorative styles in the local folk idiom. The
central element in the façade is Saint Christopher, clad like a Filipino farmer with rolled-up trousers. He
carries the Christ Child on his back while holding on to a lush coconut tree for support. Beside him are
guava and papaya trees, flanked by ornamental urns. The scene merges Western Catholic iconography
with a folk interpretation of coastal Iloilo countryside.

3. Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion – Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur

Location: Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur

Year inscribed in UNESCO: 1993
Type: Cultural

Another baroque church that’s among the 5 examples of tangible cultural heritage in the
Philippines recognized as one of the UNESCO Heritage Sites in the Philippines is the Church of Nuestra
Señora de la Asuncion in Ilocos Sur.

Built in 1765, the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion exhibits a monumental brick facade
and reinforced walls to protect it against earthquakes. Its appearance evokes a Mediterranean hill town,
the only example of such in the Philippines.

Its key features include an 85-step stairway that leads to a carving of the Virgin Mary atop a
tree, and a bell tower which was added in 1810. The power and simplicity of its geometric forms, and its
location, make this UNESCO World Heritage Site Philippines an outstanding example of Peripheral
Baroque architecture.

4. Paoay Church (Church of San Agustin) – Paoay, Ilocos Norte

Location: Paoay, Ilocos Norte
Year inscribed in UNESCO: 1993
Type: Cultural

Church of San Agustin or Paoay Church is known for its extravagant coral-block buttresses and
ornate stone finials and is among the 5 examples of tangible cultural heritage in the Philippines. The
construction of this world heritage site began in 1604 and was completed in 1710. Its coral stone bell
tower, standing at some distance from the church, was finished in the second half of the 18th century.
For your information, Philippine bell towers were constructed at a distance from the main church
structure to avoid its falling on the church during earthquakes. Paoay Church’s bell tower was said to
have been used as a Filipino watchtower during the 1898 uprising against the Spaniards.

This is one of the most notable “earthquake baroque” structures in the country where the
primary concern was to design the church for earthquake protection.

Being one of UNESCO world heritage sites in the Philippines, Paoay Church has become a top
tourist destination in the region.

5. Church of San Agustin in Manila – Intramuros, Manila

Location: Intramuros, Manila
Year inscribed in UNESCO: 1993
Type: Cultural

Like the other baroque churches that are cultural heritage sites in the Philippines, San Agustin
Church in Intramuros, Manila exhibits its remarkable features such as retablos (altars) of high Baroque
style and wall buttresses separating cripto collateral chapels. What makes this world heritage site
unique is its ceiling paintings in the tromp l’oeil style.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site San Agustin Church, built between 1587 and 1606, is
considered the oldest and longest-standing church in the country. The church was the only structure left
intact in Intramuros during World War II.

6. Historic City of Vigan

Location: Ilocos Sur
Year inscribed in UNESCO: 1999
Type: Cultural

Established in the 16th century, Vigan is the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish
colonial town in Asia according to UNESCO. One of the reasons for its inclusions in the cultural heritage
sites in the Philippines is that its architecture reflects the coming together of cultural elements from
elsewhere in the Philippines, from China and from Europe, resulting in a culture and townscape that
have no parallel anywhere in East and Southeast Asia.

Next to Manila and Cebu, Vigan was the third most important city during the height of the
Spanish colonial era in the 18th and 19th centuries. Vigan was the center of Spanish colonial power in
northern Luzon. The range of structures along the plazas and streets reveals the story of the town. The
large buildings evoke political or religious power; grand homes speak of wealth, while others show more
modest means; and cobblestones streets speak of history. This world heritage site is a living testament
to the Spanish colonial era that exerts a strong cultural influence on the modern Philippine nation.

7. Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park

Location: Puerto Princesa, Palawan
Year inscribed in UNESCO: 1999
Type: Natural

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is one of the world’s most impressive cave
systems. What makes it to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Philippines is its uniquely and impressive
features of spectacular limestone karst landscapes, pristine natural beauty, and intact old-growth
forests and distinctive wildlife.

With an underground river measuring up to 8.2 kilometers, it is said to be among the longest in
the world. The highlight of the heritage site Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is that it
flows directly into the sea, with its brackish lower half subjected to tidal influence, distinguishing it as a
significant natural global phenomenon.

8. Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park

Location: Palawan
Year inscribed in UNESCO: 1993, 2009
Type: Natural

The Tubbataha Reef Marine Park covers 33,200 hectares including the north and south reefs. It
is a marvelous marine wilderness and a special ecosystem much appreciated for its beauty as well as its
scientific value.

It is a unique example of an atoll reef with a very high density of marine species, with 80% coral
cover of 46 coral genres and 376 fish species. The site is an excellent example of a pristine coral reef
with a spectacular 100-meter perpendicular wall, extensive lagoons and two-coral islands.

Tubbataha’s north islet is a nesting site for sea birds of all kinds and endangered hawksbill sea
turtles; a diver’s paradise with gorgonian seafans, soft corals, and gigantic sea sponges serving as home
to turkey fish, anemone crab, banded seasnakes, nudibranchs, starfish, catsharks, surgeon fish, batfish,
and butterfly fish. The rare, unusual looking fox-faced rabbit fish can also be found in the marine park.
Marine turtles, including the critically endangered hawksbill and green turtle, nest on some of the
beaches.

9. Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras

Location: Ifugao Province
Year inscribed in UNESCO: 1995
Type: Cultural

The 2,000-year old Banaue Rice Terraces – the most extensive anywhere in the world – were
carved into the mountains of Ifugao by ancestors of the Batad indigenous people. The terraces are
located approximately 1,500 meters (5,000 feet) above sea level and cover 10,360 square kilometers
(about 4,000 square miles) of the mountainside.

Known as the “eight wonder of the world,” the terraces were carved with only simple tools and
bare hands. They are fed by an ancient irrigation system, an ingenious complex of bamboo pipes and
canals, drawing water from streams created by bubbling springs located in the mountain rainforests.

Considered as a monument to man’s genius in turning a rugged and forbidding terrain into a
source of sustenance, the rice terraces stand to be the most awe-inspiring man-made landscape in the
Cordilleras. They are also invariably called “The Stairway to the Sky.”

Here are some of the reasons why heritage tourism is an important part of a country’s tourism
potential:

1. Historical and cultural destinations, as part of heritage tourism, could play an even bigger role in
getting tourists to and around the Philippines. With so many heritage sites in the country, a bit
of a push in the right direction could go a long way in further enticing tourists—both local and
international—to explore.

2. Heritage sites are meaningful sources of identity and inspiration for communities across the
country. With carefully laid out programs and projects, they could also provide additional
financial resources for local government units.

3. Because each city has its own heritage, highlighting this aspect goes beyond beautification. In
fact, it shows love and pride for the country.

4. Heritage can be a platform for political recognition, a medium for intercultural dialogue, a
means of ethical reflection, and the potential basis for local economic development. It is
simultaneously local and particular, global and shared, according to the UMass Amherst Center
for Heritage & Society.

5. Travelers are more likely to stay longer at their destinations and spend more money if they
include a heritage activity, a study by the Travel Industry Association in 2003 found out.
Travelers also say that trips are more memorable if they include a heritage activity where they
learn something new about history, tradition, art and culture.
