Igor Morning
Travel agent Good morning. Er, just a moment and I'll be With you Um, now, how can I help you?
I Yes. I phoned you earlier about an eco-holiday - you know, one of those holidays where you don't damage
the environment at all and you get close to nature
T Yes. I remember Mr Petrov, isn't it?
I Yes, Igor Petrov. You said you were going to look up what was available at rather short notice.
T I did, and I've got a few things here. Just before I show them to you, though, let me get down a few details
I OK
T Right. Now, how long are you hoping to go for - a week, a month?
I I originally planned to go for three weeks, but I think actually two would be better.
T Fine. I'll just note that down Mm. I think it's a good length for a holiday. You don't want to go for too long or
it's difficult to get back to work again afterwards, I always think. And what's the limit on how much you're prepared
to pay?
I Yes, I don't really want to go above £1.750 if I can help it.
T Mm Fine, but when you come to look at the brochures, I should just point out that each of them has a
discount if you pay in advance.
I Oh! That's good. How much is it?
T It depends on the holiday you choose, but it's worth bearing in mind. Do you have any special requirements
which I should note down, by the way?
I Er. yes, one thing I'm keen on is having travel insurance while I'm away, so can you give me a quote?
T Well, I can't actually at the moment because our Internet connection is down just now, but as soon as we
have it up and running again and we know what holiday you've chosen, I'll give you a call. Is there anything else?
I Yes, there is. Actually I'm not a meat eater, so you'll need to specify to the airline that I need to eat
vegetarian meals when I fly.
T OK vegetarian meals. By the way, what nationality are you. Mr Petrov?
I I'm Russian. From St Petersburg originally.
T I just ask because I may need to see if you'll need a visa for some of the places you might visit. I'm just
pointing that out because you want to go fairly soon and it can sometimes be quite a lengthy process.

Igor So. what options are still available?
Travel agent OK. There are these three possibilities which I managed to print out earlier I thought they
looked good.
I OK, let's have a look
T Um, the first is called the Dumbarton Tablelands. It looks pretty good to me. It's in Western Australia. The
holiday really involves being close to and watching animals - almost living with them, in fact, because you get to
stay in a quite luxurious house or cabin built high up in a tree and surrounded by lovely countryside. And, you
know, there are birds and lizards and things if you like that sort of thing. So you're very sort of.
I Close to nature.
T Close to nature. That's right.
I Sounds interesting. I guess I could enjoy that. Er, what else have you got?
T Well, there's this one in the Bago Nature Reserve, where you go and stay with a local family in their house
in a small mountain village away from other tourists and the usual tourist spots. So you discover lots about the
way they live and you sort of live in the family, share their meals, help them with their work, that sort of thing.
I Mm. Not so much of a holiday, then.
T Well, it depends on you. It's very different, and they say a change is as good as a rest. And then there's San
Luis Island.
I Mm. What happens at San Luis?
T Well, it's a small island, just a few miles from the coast of Central America, but I'm not sure if it's really up
your street. You might like it because international tourist hasn't spoilt it yet, but I'd say it's more a holiday for

5
young people. You go and live in a hostel and, you know, you help paint the local school and you get to meet the
kids and sort of try your hand at teaching.
I Teaching what?
T T Oh. English or Maths, whatever you're good at. What makes the island interesting, though, is their
emissions policy. There are no cars - you have to walk or use a bicycle to get about, and you get there by sailing
boat.

TAPESCRIPT
Hannah:Hello, how can I help you?
Ryan:I’ve come in because I want to volunteer for one of your environmental project. I read
something about your organisation in the paper a few days ago and I thought I’d like to get involved
H: Ok, that sounds good. What’s your name?
R: Ryan
H: Ok Ryan, thanks for coming, I’m Hannah. Now let me start by telling you something about our
organisation and then we can have a look at a few projects that might interest you, after I’ve found out a
little bit about you
R: Fine
H: Right, well as you know we’re called The Volunteer Agency and that pretty well explains what we do,
We recruit people for a wide range of projects. A lot of our work concerns environmental projects at the
moment we’ve got 130,000 volunteers working on these projects
R: What sort of environmental projects are they?
H: Well, for example, if you wanted to go abroad, one of our big projects involves gathering information
that is used for the protection of marine and forest environment. Volunteers on that do diving or collect
biodiversity data on tropical rain forest species
R: Sounds exciting. But I think I’d rather stay here, at least to start off with
H: Ok, here in our own country we’ve got a big project aimed at cleaning up litter in the rural areas. The
aim off this is to get everyone involved in making sure their local environment is clean and tidy.
R: Yes, I’ve seen advert of that
H: Another project involves looking after the National Cycle network, keeping the routes safe and
attractive for cyclists. This is part of a bigger scheme concerned with developing sustainable transport
systems all across the country
R: Interesting..
H: Now, if you want to do something in the city, rather than the countryside, within cities we also have
the City Farm projects, which involve working with people, plants and animals
R: Oh, what are those? Are they real farm? How do they work?
H: Well, yes, they’re real farm and they’re an example of a project that relies almost entirely on
volunteers. On other projects, you might be working alongside salaried people, but with these, almost
everyone is unpaid. In fact, many of our projects have very few, if any, paid staff.
R: Yes, that’s what I thought.
H: Well, do any of these things sound particularly appealing to you?
8
R: Well, as I say, I wasn’t thinking of going abroad, and I’m not sure that any of those thing is exactly
the sort of thing I’m looking for. Sorry!
H: That’s OK, there are lots more things I can tell you about. I’m sure we’ll find a project that’s right up
your street
R: Yes, I hope so.
H: OK, well, let’s have a look at a few other possibilities.
Pause
H: Well, one thing that might suit you is a scheme called Wildlife Link. There are 47 branches of this
around the country, with over 24,000 active volunteers, and it’s involved in all aspects of nature
conservation. Its aim is to protect wildlife in all habitats across the country. Things you can do there
include looking after nature reserves, taking part in community gardening and carrying out surveys of
wildlife species. Tell me, are you keen to be outdoors?
R: Yes, I am, and that does sound like the sort of thing I might be really interested in.
H: Ok. Well, here’s another project that you might like the sound of. This one’s aimed at young people.
R: Right, tell me about that one.
H: It’s called Wildlife Watch, and involves organising groups for young people, getting them to explore
and learn about their local environment. There are over 300 groups and around 150,000 members of
those groups. As well as running those group and going out with them, there is a need for volunteers
with administrative skills. Is that the sort of thing you might fancy?
R: Maybe, but I think I’d probably prefer to be more hands-on, doing physical work.
H: Ok, well, then the organisation called Action Earth might be the one for you. They’ve got a total of
908 projects involving over 18,000 volunteers. They do all sorts of things, from planting trees to
constructing fences and walls and collecting litter, their aim being to improve the local environment in all
sorts of ways. How does that sound?
R: I might well be interested in that.
H: Ok, look, I’ll give you some leaflets and contact information, and you can have a think about it all.
R: That sounds like a good idea. Thanks
