Pre task: Set the context

Time Activities
5 minutes 1. Lead-in:
6:00- 6:05 Bring an old cell phone to the class and show it to
the students.

As a plenary, start asking different students the

following questions:
 What is this?
 What is it used for?
 Do you think you can live without your
mobile or is it a very important part of your
life?
 Can we consider that cell phones are a
good invention or a bad one? Why?
 What do scientists say about the influence
of mobile phones on our health?
5 minutes 2. Warm up:
6:05- 6:10 Project some questions on the board to connect
with the topic of inventions.
In pairs, the students will discuss them.
 How did the invention of cell phones
change people’s life?
 What are the best and the most useful
inventions of the 20th and 21st centuries?
 What do you think is the worst invention?
 What famous inventors do you know? What
did they invent?
5 minutes 3. In plenary, elicit answers from each pair.
6:10-6:15
4. Write on the board some of the answers
students give in regard to the questions about
best and worst inventions.

5. In a different pair work, students will talk about

how those inventions have changed people’s
lives.

Task preparation: create and invention and convince investors.

Time Activities
5 minutes 6. Task preparation:
6:15- 6:20 Tell the students they have the
possibility of receiving money from a
company that wants to invest in a new
product, so they need to create an
invention and persuade the company to
invest in it.

7. Explain the task:

Set the students in trios. Tell them that
they will have 20 minutes to create an
invention that meets the following
criteria:

 It needs to have a name.

 They need to describe the
appearance or make a sketch of
it.
 Describe what the object is used
for and how it functions.
 Mention the possible target for the
product and the tentative price.

Within those 20 minutes, tell them that

they also have to write down a short
speech to convince the investors to buy
their product.

Clarify that when they have everything

done, they will present the invention to 3
partners that will decide which is the best
invention.
20 minutes 8. Task implementation:
6:20- 6:40 Students work in their trios to create
their invention and write down their
speeches.
While the task is being implemented
monitor the teams and take notes.
5 minutes 9. Tell the students that their time is up,
6:40-6:45 but they will have 5 extra minutes to
rehearse the speeches they wrote.
Meanwhile select three students as
CEOs and explain them that they will be
in charge of deciding whether to invest
or not.
15 minutes 10. Presentations:
6:45- 7:00 Have each trio pass in front of the CEOs
to present their invention.

11. Once all the students presented, the

CEOs gather and choose one invention
to invest in.

Post- task: help students to perform better.

Time Activities
10 minutes 12. Language analysis:
7:00- 7:10 After listening to students utterance,
correct some mistakes and present
some structures that could help them to
perform better the next time. One
possibility could be these phrases to
convince people:

 My invention is the best option

since...
 You should invest in my idea
because...
 I would like you to be part of this
project because...
 I am speaking to you today
because...
 My objective today is to...
 I would like to present...
 My invention has the following
characteristics...
15 minutes 13. Further practice:
7:10- 7:25 Students gather again in trios to polish
their presentations.

14. They present one more time to the

CEOs, yet this time including the
teacher’s observations.
5 minutes 15. Closure:
7:25- 7:30 In plenary ask for students impressions
about the class.
