The Patterns of Research Effort and Extinction Risk of Marine Mammals in
the Philippines a study written by Tiongson AJC, Utzurrum JA and de la Paz MEL (2021) emphasize the inadequate studies about the marine mammals that is facing risk of species extinction. It is found there is a scarce of study about the marine mammals in the Philippines- in 30 species present in the country there were only 28 confirmed marine mammals and 26 of them are data deficient. The study aims to create an awareness to make more studies not only to the sole purpose of science to discover more but to make a stand in the conservation of these animals because the insufficient study leads to more hunting and catching for market production and consuming. It is also discovered that although FAOs 185 and 185-1 are implemented to continue the monitoring of the marine mammal species’ it is becoming unknown because the effectiveness of this approach was never tracked. The tropics have the largest populations of all the world's biodiversity and significant risks to conservation. The study emphasize that the region represents the area where conservation efforts are most urgently needed; especially in Southeast Asia that having one of the largest numbers of species that are endangered because of a multitude of contributing factors. Also the research pinpoints that terrestrial environment is not the only source of this biodiversity. Southeast Asia's complicated geological history has resulted in a vast and diversified maritime ecosystem that has the highest global diversity of marine life. The topic of the study made me reminisce my first year in Biology Course where my zoology professor keep telling us that a lot animal species are becoming extinct even before it was studied and known. Now I’m reading that lot of factors can affect life extinction of a set of species.and it is disappointing that we or even our great researchers can’t do something to protect them. The study is really an eye opening for the young generation to create more research and be more curious especially in these very moment that importance of research if being questioned and being unconsidered and people were people who tends to speak were being smart shamed and laughed at by others. It must and should be the golden era for knowledge because the modern technologies are being more accessible however majority of people use the technology for awful purposes. I hope that this research will become supplemental to open a new horizon for the research realm of conservation of our biodiversity. Opportunities on the gaps of the study must be field so that more people could be aware and also I would recommend for this study to make a PSA graphics so that it could reach more people and encourage them to take good care and be aware of out marine mammals .
