Road Safety Week is an event to raise awareness of how to stay safe when out
on the roads. It happens every year and this year, Road Safety Week is
happening on 15th – 21st November. Each year there is a different theme.
The theme this year is ‘Road Safety Heroes’.
Staying Safe
If you notice somewhere where it is tricky to cross safely, write to your local
council and ask them to make a change to help make streets safer.
Finally, you can help to celebrate the professionals working hard to keep
our roads safe by raising awareness of road safety, by thanking them or by
contacting your local council to encourage them to provide ways for people to
walk or cycle safely. Can you think of any other ways?

7. Why do you think Road Safety Week has asked local councils to provide ways for people to
walk or cycle safely? Explain your answer.
Pupil’s own response, such as: I think Road Safety week has asked local councils to provide
safer ways to cross the road as someone is killed or seriously injured every 20 minutes on
UK roads. Councils can decide where to add crossings or add speed limits which would help
people crossing in difficult areas.

Pupil’s own response, such as: To stay safe when crossing the road, you must make sure you
cross at a safe place, ideally at a crossing, such as a pelican crossing. Don’t cross the road
between parked cars or near a bend in the road because drivers might not be able to see
you. Look both ways before crossing and also listen for cars. You should always walk when
crossing the road, never run.
