ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF KINDERGARTEN PUPILS WITH PARENTS

INVOLVEMENTS OF TANDAG CENTRAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

I. Context and Rationale

Early childhood is essential to child development, this is a very important

stage where the child learn in various fields such as cognitive, social and behavioral.

According to Dr. Jessica Alvarado, academic program director for the BA in Early

Childhood Development at National University. This is not just only learning the basic

skills.” It is so much more than that” “She says” It’s a time when children learn

critical, social and emotional skills. In this period of time partnership is also formed

between the child, their parents and the teacher. These partnership is crucial to

every inch of child’s development,if it is carried out well, it will give a huge impact to

the child educational process.

For so many years of teaching in Kindergarten level, I can say that the

partnership between the learners, parents and me is quite in good terms. Despite of

this good partnership still the Tandag Central Elementary School (TCES) often

confronted with problems affecting academic performance of the learners. In

kindergarten level, very poor of readiness of the pupils affects their performances.

This is attributed to the problem on absenteeism and lack of parental support. The

education must know what exactly is happening in the world of the children, with the

people whom they interact with, they need to explore what are their dreams, how

they skillfully protect themselves from the complicated world, what are the things

they learn independently inside their classroom and to the school as well, and how

they achieve it. The student’s achievement in school is not in financial or social

status but how the family give support and create good or pleasant home

environment that encourages academic learnings and teachings of life skills to

become a better person in the society where they belong. The parent’s expectations
of the academic progress of their child must be realistic, so that their achievements

will be measure accurately and teachers can address the problems and come up

with a better solution. In this manner the child’s development and their achievement

is not only solely at their hands but first and foremost, the parents must be involved

in every step of the way in their educational journey to achieve greater in life.

This supported by the study of Batacan (2012) that there is direct relationship

between parents’ involvement and academic performances in A. Bonifacio

Elementary School at Davao City thus, there is a need to sustain intervention to

increase parental involvement for greater parental involvement of early stage in

children’s learning affects the child’s school performance. The Scenario in

Kindergarten School of TCES did not make the Stakeholders to support the

programs, projects, and activities, thus this endeavor to improve the level of parent

involvement which aimed to increase its ultimate goal better education achievement.

II. Action Research Question

1. What Parent assisted academic performance for Kindergarten learners of

TCES?

2. What is the academic performance of kindergarten learners of TCES?

3. What are the problems meet by the parents in assessing the academic

performance of the learners?

4. What intervention programs can be utilized to address the problem meet by

the parents in assessing the academic performance of the learners?

III. Proposed Innovations, Interventions, and Strategy

The study will use descriptive correlation design which aims to determine the

relationship between the involvement of parents and the academic performance of

the kindergarten pupils in Tandag Central Elementary School. It will employ

Purposive sampling techniques in identifying parents who are the respondents of this

study and their respective children.

Intervention:

1. Conduct regular Homeroom PTA meeting.

2. Home Visitation

3. Parents Interview

4. Parent’s follow-up pupils’ assignment

5. Parent’s involvement in school activities.

6. Conduct remedial class to the learners waiting for the “sundo”.

Process of Intervention:

A. I will have to conduct regular monthly HPTA meeting with parents informing

them about the performance of their children.

- Show to them the checklist the learning proficiency every grading period.

B. Regular home Visitation to parents 2 their child having time absent in the

class.

- Discuss with the parents the negative effect of absenteeism in the

academic performance.

C. Interview parents regarding the role in its family.

D. I have found out that their daily assignment most parents thus, no time to

follow-up the assignment of their child, thus really affect the prior academic

performance of children.
E. One way of establishing harmonies between parents and teacher’s

relationship to let them involve in any school activities and events, such as

General PTA day, Christmas gathering, Homeroom PTA Meeting, General

PTA Meeting and etc.

IV. Action Research Methods

A. Participants and/ or other sources of Data and Information

The respondents of the study are the kindergarten pupils of Tandag

CentralElementary School and their parents S.Y 2021-2022.

B. Data Gathering Methods

The researcher will utilize a checklist to identify parent’s involvement on the

academic performance of the pupils and use School Reading Year End

Assessment (SRYEA) for Kindergarten pupils as indicator of their academic

performance.

C. Data Analysis Plan

The study used descriptive correlation design employing purposeful sampling

technique with identified pupils. It utilized researchers made questionnaire

and will be answered by the parents. The researcher will also use Pearson

Product Moment Coefficient of correlation to determine the level of

relationship between parent’s involvement and academic performance of the

pupils.
