An Analysis

The Story of An Hour tells about the conflict of marriage where most relationships happens to experience the
same fate. It also portrays the grievance of a supposedly widow with a heart-condition which later on
compliments her will of existence that has led to her joyous death. The story took place at Mrs. Mallard’s, the
protagonist, household and was told in the Third Person Omniscient. [Exposition] Given her weak heart, Mrs.
Mallards’ sister Josephine taken great care in order to comfort her regarding the news about her husband’s
death. [Rising Action] It was Josephine who told her what happened, but not as vulgar and as directly to the
point although slightly revealing the incident. Her husband’s friend Richard was there, too, near her. He was
the one to first receive the intelligence about the railroad disaster where Brently Mallard [Antagonist] was
one of the men “killed” during the incident. After confirming the news, he then hastened to relay immediately,
but in a more careful and more tender approach, for, too, fear that the message he’s about the relay might
cause Mrs. Mallards’ death. [Climax] She was not like the others upon hearing the same story, instead when
she first heard about the death of her husband, she didn’t shed the same about of tears as theirs. But as times
of grief passed by, she chose to be alone. After some times of grievance, Mrs. Mallard found within her self
the outburst of freedom she was longing for a very long period of time. She then realizes her worth as a
person and now that she is no longer a prisoner of love that has never been on her side, she shouts in rejoice
and have a thought of her days and seasons to cherish ahead of her. [ Falling Action] After some time of sitting
behind the closed door of Mrs. Mallard, Josephine has been finally granted of her wish to have her sister open
the door. The soon the door opened, both sisters shared warm embraced and headed down the stairs where
Richard was waiting. A few seconds after, Brent Mallard opened the door, entered, claiming he was far from
the scene where the incident took place and haven’t heard had there been one. [Denouement] After seeing
that her supposed-to-dead husband, Mrs. Mallard’s reaction was indeed comparable to a struck of lightning,
which then took her life. As the doctors arrived, the claimed that Mrs. Mallard’s death wasn’t due to her
disease—but the joy that kills.

The Plot of the story obviously portrays tragedy. Where the main character of the story meets their end as
horrible as death.

Louise Millard was the only Dynamic Character
