Overview

CR Systems
CR Systems process and produce digital images directly from
latent images captured on storage phosphor screens. You can
reproduce, reprocess, and distribute images to other output and
storage devices.
The Classic and Elite CR Systems are designed for flexibility in
distributed radiography applications where the User Console and
Reader can be located apart to optimize workflow. The Console
and Reader can be co-located for central processing environments
as well.
The CR Systems manage patient and examination information
associated with the captured and stored images. They can interface
with a PACS broker to obtain patient demographic data from the
site HIS/RIS system. The data is sent to the CR System where it is
associated with the proper image. Use the CR System to:
• Read images on a phosphor screen using conventional X-ray
generators.
• Modify images and change image orientation.
• Enter examination and patient information using the Remote
Operations Panel (ROP), the bar code scanner, or the
touchscreen monitor.
• Correct erroneous patient or examination information.
• Store images that have incomplete patient or study data until
the required data is added and the image is accepted.
• Create collections of related images and data (a Procedure).
• Send exams to DICOM storage devices, physicians’
diagnostic viewing stations, and DICOM laser imagers.
The CR 950/975/Max CR Systems are designed for use as
centralized processing units serving multiple exposure rooms in
conjunction with the ROP.

Classic/Elite CR System Operation

The Classic/Elite CR Systems have an IEC 320 Power Connector

and accept Mains Cords with a matching IEC 320 Connector.

Power Failures
There are various types of power disruptions that can affect a CR
System. Voltage sags, voltage surges, brownouts, line noise, high
voltage spikes, frequency variations, switching transients, and
harmonic distortions. These disruptions can be corrected by a
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS).
A UPS provides back-up power in the event of a power failure.
However, the Classic/Elite CR Systems do not come with a UPS.
Back-up power will last for a specific length of time, depending on
the UPS energy storage capacity and the power requirements of
the equipment. A UPS also conditions the power provided to the
CR System. If you choose to provide a UPS system for your
Classic/Elite CR System, follow the manufacturer’s
recommendation for use and battery replacement.
UPS Specification #1: 1500 VA UPS Whole System or Reader

3 CR 825/850/950 Systems
Operation

Power Failures
The CR 825/850/950 Systems contain an Uninterruptible Power
Supply (UPS) to protect against an abrupt power loss.
If a power failure occurs, the UPS sustains system power to:
• Complete all critical activities.
• Save present operating data.
• Shut down the Operating System.
If power is restored before the UPS battery charge drops to 25 %,
the system resumes operation without interruption. However, once
the battery level drops to 25 %, the system automatically shuts
down.
In the event of a power loss, an error message appears within 30
seconds of the power loss. For any image currently being routed,
the system attempts to complete the transmission. If there is not
sufficient time to accomplish this, the image is automatically
transmitted once power is restored.
If a cassette is in the load position at the time of automatic
shutdown, the system completes the scan, stores the raw image on
the hard disk, and erases the phosphor screen prior to the UPS
shutdown.

CAUTION:
The Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) battery must be
replaced by an authorized Service Provider. The UPS
battery contains lead and poses a hazard to the
environment and human health if not disposed of
properly. Due to the toxicity of lead, the US EPA’s
Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and
state solid/hazardous waste authorities consider a spent
lead-acid battery a regulated waste. The customer must
treat this battery as a hazardous waste if it is not recycled.
A recycling infrastructure is widely available in the US to
manage this battery type.

2021-03-10 AD8154 3-1

CR 825/850/950 Systems Operation

For recycling/disposal options in the European Union, visit the

European Portable Battery Association (EPBA) Web site at
http://www.epbaeurope.net/. In other areas, contact local for
regional solid waste authorities or recycling/disposal guidance.
Replace the UPS battery periodically. Contact your authorized
Service Provider for UPS service and replacement.

CAUTION:
The UPS provides enough power in battery mode to
complete only the scan in progress during a brownout or
blackout condition. After such an event, the UPS battery
charge level is low and requires up to two hours to fully
recharge after utility power is restored. During this
recharge time, the system is susceptible to operational
failure should power be lost again. This failure could
result in the loss of image data. It is at the discretion of the
operator to discontinue using the product for a two-hour
period after power is lost.

A UPS is not safety certified as medical electrical equipment and

should not be located in the patient vicinity. See “Patient Vicinity”
on page 2-4.

CR 975/Max CR Systems Operation

IMPORTANT: Newer models of CR 975/Max CR Systems will not

contain a UPS.

Power Failures—Systems NOTE: This option is no longer available.

with an Internal UPS
The system communicates and monitors the UPS. If a power
failure occurs, the UPS sustains system power to:
• Complete all critical activities
• Save present operating data, and
• Shut down the Operating System.

CR 975/Max CR Systems Operation

CAUTION:
The UPS provides enough power in battery mode to
complete only the scan in progress during a brownout or
black-out condition. After such an event, the UPS battery
charge level is lo and requires up to two hours to fully
recharge after utility power is restored. During this
recharge time, the system is susceptible to operational
failure should power be lost again. This failure could
result in the loss of image data. It is at the discretion of the
operator to discontinue using the product for a two-hour
period after power is lost.

CR Long-Length Vertical The CR Long-Length Vertical Cassette Holder is a pair of hinged
Cassette Holder panels that hold two 35 x 43 cm phosphor screens in each panel.
When you close the cassette holder and expose the patient, the
screens are overlapped so that you can capture a full-length image,
producing a composite image up to 129.54 cm (51.00 in.) long and
43.18 cm (17.00 in.) wide. The following three illustrations show
the Vertical Cassette Holder in open and closed positions.

Long-Length Portable Cassette Labels

Number Label Function

1 Bar Code Tells the CR System that the cassette
is a Long-Length CR Portable
Cassette, and that this is the first
exposure. There are black and red
digits on the bar code label. The last
five digits of the black bar code
should always match the last five
digits of the bar code at position 1.
2 Tube Side Indicates which side to face towards
label the X-ray beam as with standard CR
cassettes. The CR System will
always present the exposure with the
Tube Side label as the top of the
image on the Image Viewer screen.
When the cassette is inserted into the
grid, the Tube Side label should face
the grid.
3 Tube Side/ID Provides a place to mark the cassette.
