1. INTRODUCTION
The business plan of CODELCO requires a change in mining method from open pit mining to
underground mining due to the impending end of the economic life of the former method.
Among the works defined as "Obras de Infraestructura Permanente Inicial" (OIPI), Permanent
Initial Infrastructure Works, Project "Mina Chuquicamata Subterranea" (PMCHS), Chuquicamata
Underground Mine, is a development called "Pique Norte 1" (PN-1), Ventilation Shaft No.1,
which is part of the main ventilation system of the mine and provides for the extraction of stale
air from the underground mine workings.
To enable the construction of the Ventilation Shaft, certain specialised structures and equipment
must be installed to carry out the shaft excavation and concrete lining . One such item of
equipment is the Main Sinking Stage Winder.
This document provides the calculations related to the steel wire ropes to be used , together with
the Main Sinking Stage Winder, for the suspension, raising and lowering of the Main Sinking
Stage during the shaft sinking operation .
2. OBJECTIVE
The objective of this document is to provide the calculations relating to the mechanical strength
of the steel wire ropes to be used for the suspension , raising and lowering of the Main Sinking
Stage during the shaft sinking operation.
3. SCOPE
The scope of this document covers the two (2) steel wire ropes (identical , of the same
configuration) to be used , together with the Main Sinking Stage Winder, for the suspension ,
raising and lowering of the Main Sinking Stage during the shaft sinking operation .

AND MINING PLANTS
• SANS 10294 "The performance , operation , testing and maintenance of drum winders
relating to rope safety" (Formerly SABS 0294, Published by the South African Bureau of
Standards)
6. BASIS OF CALCULATION
For the construction of extraction shaft PN-1 , a lifting system for the sinking stage consists of
two (2) winders, six (6) sheaves (2 for deflection and 4 for suspension) located on the sheave
platform in the headgear, plus four (4) suspension sheaves mounted on the stage . The
suspension of the stage is done by passing (called reeving) the steel wire rope through this
series of sheaves, providing in total eight (8) falls of rope , with the one end of each rope wound
onto and secured to the winder drum and the other (fixed) end secured on the sheave platform
in the headgear. Lowering and raising of the stage is then accomplished by either reeling rope
out from the winder drums or reeling rope back in onto the winder drums.
See diagrams of system of suspension of the stage in figures 6.1 and 6.2 in Annexure E.
The main aspects for consideration in this document consist of the following:
• Checking rope breaking strength under static load cases
• Checking rope breaking strength under dynamic load cases
• Checking that rope bending is within acceptable limits
• Abrasion , corrOSion, distortion

Due to the stage being suspended on the two ropes reeved through the series of sheaves
creating eight (8) falls of rope as described above, the masses and loads on these ropes are
thus evenly distributed so that each of these eight falls of rope carry one eighth of the total
suspended load . The masses of the various components of the stage together with the total
masses conside red are detailed in Appendix A.
6.2 Checks for Rope Breaking Strength (Minimum Breaking Strength Required)
In order to check that the ropes comply with the minimum breaking strength required for ropes
for this particular operation the load on the rope where it leaves the sheave wheel in the
headgear is calculated. The stage is considered to be at the maximum winding depth in the shaft
with all of the imposed loads (live loads) added to it. This total load is considered to be carried
equally by the eight falls of rope on which the stage is suspended . To this is added the mass of
the length of rope from the headgear sheave wheel to its corresponding sheave wheel on the
stage.
This load on the rope is then compared to the breaking strength of the rope in order to determine
the safety factor attained .

9. CONCLUSIONS
The calculations done have shown that the rope selected for this duty complies with Decreto
No.132, REGLAMENTO DE SEGURIDAD MINERA, 30 Diciembre 2002, MINISTERIO DE
MINERIA, Republica de Chile; Mineral Act Regulations of the Mine Health & Safety Act (Act 29
of 1996) of the Republic of South Africa; Ontario - Occupational Health and Safety Act, R.R.O.
1990, REGULATION 854, MINES AND MINING PLANTS and SANS 10294 "The performance,
operation , testing and maintenance of drum winders relating to rope safety."
The rope supplied is an 18 strand "Fishback" non-spin stage rope having the construction
12x10(8/2)/6x29(11/12/61l)/wMC and supplied by Scaw Metals, Rope Division, who have
supplied winding ropes to the mining industry for many decades. The selection of this rope was
done on the basis of the operating conditions anticipated and the knowledge of experienced
engineers.
Resistance to failure has been checked relative to both static and dynamic conditions.
Calculations have been carried out for the two load cases anticipated during the drilling and
mucking cycle and during the concreting cycle.
The static factor of safety was calculated using the worst of these two load cases and
considering the stage to be at its lowest point in the shaft, thus taking the mass of the full length
of rope into account. There being eight (8) falls of rope supporting the stage, each fall is
considered to carry one eighth (1 /8) of the total mass of the stage and its working loads.
Under these conditions the static safety factor was found to be 5,45 , where the minimum
required is 5.
The dynamic factor was calculated taking into account the effect of acceleration of the winding
rope when the stage is moved by the winding engine.
Under these conditions the dynamic safety factor was found to be 5,42 where the minimum
required is 4,5.
The bending of the rope over the winding drum and over the sheaves was checked to ensure
that the minimum bending ratios required are complied with .
In the case of the winding drum , the bending ratio was found to be 63 and in the case of the
sheaves the bending ratio was found to be 45 where in both cases the minimum required
bending ratio is 42.
This winding rope is found to be suitable for this application in all respects.

Under static conditions, elongation of the rope occurs due to the load imposed on it.
The maximum elongation occu rs with the stage at its lowest point in the shaft .
This is calculated by:
2,55m
The maximum static force in the rope occurs with the stage at its lowest point in the shaft
This is calcu lated by:
Fs. max = Where: mm" is the total suspended load (per rope) (kg)
1000 g is the acceleration due to gravity (9,81)
24430 x 9,81
1000
When the stage is moved by means of the winding drum, an additional acceleration force is induced .
This results in a dynamic loading on the rope, which is calculated by:
