Standard Comments
All orders shall be subject to the limits set out in the Castrol Directory of Marine Services (for example the restrictions set out in the Castrol
Directory of Marine Services in respect of maximum or minimum delivery quantities or lead time required by us). Deliveries of any marine
lubricant will be subject to availability at the port in question and we shall not be liable to you if any grade or method of delivery set out in
the Castrol Directory of Marine Services as being normally available is not available.
This Lubricant Schedule has been produced using machinery details provided by the vessel operator in the form of a previous lubrication
schedule prepared by a third party.
Since 1998 for new or overhauled VTR..4 turbochargers, ABB have strongly recommended the use of synthetic oils. The preferred Castrol
lubricant is therefore Castrol Aircol SR 68.
For high performance turbochargers (i.e. VTR..4P, VTR..4D, VTR..4E) and highly loaded standard VTR..4 series models, ABB state that a
special synthetic oil must be used. Castrol Aircol SR 68 is an ABB tested and approved special synthetic oil. ABB further state if the
operator fails to comply with this recommendation this may have negative consequences to the operation of the turbocharger.
For order instructions and product availabilities please see the PSD
Some grades may be blended to order.
The choice of cylinder oil depends on OEM requirements, sulphur level of the fuel and operating conditions. If operating parameters
change contact Castrol Marine.
If changing refrigerant or making any system changes refer to the manufacturers operating manual and contact Castrol Marine for any
change in lubricant recommendation.
All Aircol SN, Aircol SR, Aircol SW, Aircol 228, Aircol 229, Aircol PG, Alphasyn HG, Alphasyn PG and Alphasyn EP product ranges are high
quality synthetic lubricants. These products have been specifically manufactured to give a superior performance to mineral oils and in
general tend to be application specific. In order to realise the full benefits of these products it is important that the following points be
observed:-
a. Do not mix different synthetics with each other or with mineral oils.
b. In all cases where a synthetic fluid is replacing a mineral oil in a refrigeration system it is important to refer to the operating manual for
specific OEM recommendations.
c. When changing over from a mineral oil to a synthetic lubricant ensure thorough cleanliness. Remove as much of the old mineral oil as
possible by draining down with the oil still warm. When this is complete remove surplus oil from the system and internals of the machine
with a lint free rag. Refer to operators manual for any instruction on changeover to synthetic lubricants.
a. Do not mix different synthetics with each other or with mineral oils.
b. When changing over from a mineral oil to an environmentally responsible lubricant ensure thorough cleanliness. Remove as much of the
old mineral oil as possible by draining down when the oil is still warm. Refer to operators manual for any instruction on changeover to
synthetic lubricants.
d. When changing over from a standard grease to an environmentally responsible grease ensure thorough cleanliness. Remove as much
of the old grease as possible. Refer to operators manual for any instruction on changeover to synthetic lubricants.
e. As with all EAL products special OEM conditions may apply such as meeting seal material requirements and operating conditions.
Hyspin AWV 32 is not widely available throughout the Castrol Marine supply network. It is recommended that sufficient surplus stock is
taken on board to ensure that a convenient supply port is located.
Locally branded products may be supplied in lieu which will be of comparable performance for the recommended application.
The specified Castrol multigrade for smaller 4-stroke engines will generally be supplied as Vecton15W-40, although other comparable
Castrol branded multigrades of a similar performance may be supplied. Please note that all these SAE 15W-40 multigrades are fully
miscible and compatible.
Local alternatives may be supplied if Outboard 2T is unavailable.

Health, Safety and Environment Information
The following Health and Safety and Lubricant Management advice are extracts from the full health, safety and environmental information which is provided for all products in the relevant Safety Data
Sheets, (SDS), which should be held on board the vessel. The SDS's give full details of potential hazards, precautions and first aid measures, together with advice on environmental effects and
disposal of used products. Refer to http://msdspds.castrol.com/ to view the latest SDS, and the Directory of Marine Services for more information.
SPILLS
- Contain and recover spilled material using sand or other suitable inert absorbent material.
- Product contaminated rags, paper or material used to absorb spillages, represent a fire hazard, and should be disposed of safely immediately after use.
- Spilled material may make surfaces slippery.
HANDLING
- Avoid contact with eyes.
- If splashing is likely to occur wear a full face visor or chemical goggles as appropriate.
- Avoid frequent or prolonged skin contact with fresh or used product.
- If injection through skin of high pressure lubricant has occurred, seek urgent medical attention.
- Avoid inhalation of lubricant mists, vapours and fumes.
- Take particular care to avoid contact with all used oils and combustion deposits.
- Good working practices, high standards of personal hygiene and plant cleanliness must be maintained at all times. - Wash hands thoroughly with soap or cleanser and water after contact.
- Use disposable cloths and discard when soiled.
- Do not put soiled cloths into pockets.
STORAGE
- Drums should be stored under cover away from heat and sources of ignition.
- Store drums thoroughly lashed, under cover and tightly sealed, preventing water accumulating on drum ends. It is possible that water ingress may occur if drums are stored vertically, and a solution is
to store horizontally but well secured.
- Where outdoor storage is unavoidable, drums should be covered.
- Ensure drums are tightly sealed after use.
DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS
- Dispose of via an authorised person/ licensed waste disposal contractor in accordance with local regulations.
- Incineration may be carried out under controlled conditions provided that local regulations for emissions are met.
- At sea, used or unwanted product should be stored for eventual discharge into port approved waste oil disposal facilities.
FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURES
- Use foam, dry powder or water fog. Do not use water jets.
- Fires in confined spaces should be dealt with by trained personnel wearing approved breathing apparatus.
- Water may be used to cool nearby heat exposed areas/objects/packages.
- Avoid spraying directly into storage containers because of the danger of boil-over.
- Toxic fumes, smoke, carbon dioxide and hazardous gases, including carbon monoxide may be evolved on burning or exposure to heat.
