SCOP DESALTER TRANSFORMER 1106.1

Rev. 0 July 2002

1 SCOPE :-

This specification covers the requirements for the design and testing relevant to “Desalting Transformer”.

2. DEFINITION :-

The desalter power transformer is a step-up transformer producing a voltage gradient for two parallel
horizontal metal grids inside the desalter vessel. It is actually a combination of transformer and reactor.
The purpose of the reactor is to protect the transformer from a high current of “dead short”.

3. REFERENCE CODES AND STANDARDS :-

IEC – 76 = Power transformer.

IEC – 79 = Electrical apparatus for explosive gas atmospheres.

IEC – 296 = Specification for new insulating oils for transformers & switchgear.

API – RP – 500B = Classification of areas for electrical installations at drilling rigs and production
facilities on land and on marine fixed and mobile platforms.

1. OPERATING CONDITIONS :-

The environmental conditions will be indicated on the “Data Sheet”, taking into consideration that the
transformer will be mounted upon the Desalter vessel, that means outdoor, hazardous area.

2. RATINGS :-
2.1. REACTOR :-

The reactor should be sized so that it’s combination with the transformer reactance is (100%) referred to
transformer rating.

2.2. RATED POWER :-

The rated power of the transformer (KVA) is the power that the transformer withstand continuously in case of
short-circuit (at reactor terminals).

2.3. VOLTAGE RATINGS :-

The primary voltage is as indicated on the “Data Sheet”, the secondary voltage is selected by an off-load
tapping switch on the primary wiring, the range of the secondary voltage is as indicated on the “Data Sheet”.

3. DIMENSIONS AND MOUNTING :-

Dimensions given in the “Data Sheet” should be followed strictly, this is very important for the connection of
the transformer to the “high-voltage chamber”, (supplied by others).
The transformer will be skid mounted, so the vessel manufacturer to manufacture the skid properly shall use
the dimensions of the transformer bottom base.

4. CONNECTION SCHEME: -

The transformer connection is either single-phase or two-phase (see Fig-1- attached).

Civil and penal provision of the law.

5. TRANSFORMER HIGH-VOLTAGE BUSHING :-

The transformer high-voltage bushing details is as indicated in standard drawing no.(00-ES-51), it is normally
immersed in the insulating oil contained in the bushing housing, the out-put terminal flange size and rating are
as indicated in the “Data Sheet”. The possibility of electrical breakdown always exists in any high-voltage
equipment, so the insulating oil quality and proper level should always be maintained.
The insulating portion of the bushing should be made of solid Teflon.

6. ACCESSORIES :-

6.1. Normally the transformer should be a conservator type, it should be equipped with protective
device for automatic disconnection of the transformer from the source of supply (Buchholz
relay, pressure switch).

6.2. The required accessories will be those requested on the “Data Sheet”. Accessories should be
Ex-d or Ex-o type.

7. PERMISSIBLE OIL TEMPERATURE :-

The permissible temperature rise at the top of the oil should not exceed (40 C).

8. TESTS :-
8.1. TYPE TESTS :-

They will consist of:-

a) Short-circuit test (at the reactor terminals shorted continuously).

b) Measurement of the combination reactance (Transformer + Reactor) and the Reactor value.

c) Temperature rise test.

d) Impulse-voltage withstand test.

e) Checking for leak.

f) Type test of insulation and tap selector switch.

g) Dimensional check.

h) Full load test (at the terminals of transformer).

8.2. ROUTINE TESTS :-

They will consist of:-

a) Measurement of winding resistance.

b) Measurement of impedance voltages.
c) Measurement of no-load losses and current.
d) Measurement of voltage ratio.
e) Functional test (Accessories functions)
