SOLUTION

SITE ORIENTATION

The main church building is facing towards East, whereas the sun rises up. This reflects
to the beliefs of Christians, that Christ will come from east and it symbolizes that they were
orienting their selves towards
Christ. The site is provided
with a public and private
parking spaces. The parking
spaces have some tall trees that
does not block much sunlight.
These trees in the parking space
should be replaced by deciduous
trees to block more sunlight that
heats up the concrete pavement.

RAMP

The Church is elevated 1-step up with a riser of 200mm and provided 2-ramps for PWDs.
The provided ramp has a steep slope, it should be sloped by 1:12 or 2400mm in length. The
actual location of the ramps can be seen easily as it was located at the front and at the side of the
building. It is also suggested to provide handrails to support the users of the ramp.

LANDSCAPE

The actual site has provided lots of concrete pavements around the Church, which affects the heat
to reflect and makes the site have higher temperature. Although some trees are planted around the
Church, it is still not enough to absorb the heat especially at parking space. Providing small garden
outside the Church and adding more green space can help reduce the heat.
These trees provided in site
should be replaced by a type
of deciduous tree. Deciduous
trees can absorb more
sunlight and provide more
shade for the users. Trees not
only helps block sunlight but
also sound and pollution from
outside the property.

PAVEMNT

The private parking space beside the Church is made with pure concrete that again makes
the site have higher temperature. Having lighter colored-concrete pavement can help reduce the
heat but there is a better way to avoid high usage of concrete and maximizing the greenery of the
space around the Church. The use of grass pavers
has a lot advantage than using just pure concrete
pavement:

1. It has more aesthetic look.

2. Can either be a roadway or a lawn.
3. Gives sustainability
4. Absorbs rain water Figure 3. Sample of Grass Pavers for Parking

INTERIOR OF THE MONASTERY

Upon entering the building, the visitors or worshipers should be greeted by a feeling of
sacredness. The ceiling of the current church has lower ceiling height, it should be provided with
higher ceiling and larger clerestory windows. The purpose of having higher ceiling makes the
area feel more sacred and it helps in the acoustics and lighting of the interior.
The Altar requires use of symmetry, the arc-structure should be located in different area
and positioned forward. The chandeliers’ location at both sides is inappropriate and should be
located at the center. As an alternative lighting to each side, wall lamps or candle stands can be
used for lighting.

Giving more aesthetics to the interior, floor tiles and wall tiles should not be in the same
color. Floor material from nave to altar should differ from the wall, also notice the design of the
tiles do not blend with the aesthetics of the exterior. To make the interior more incorporated with
the exterior, the interior walls should also have a rough finish concrete and compliment with a
white paint. As for the flooring brown tiles that can make the aesthetic more sacred.

ORNAMENTS AND ARTWORK

The typical churches especially in Christianity have statues, ornaments, ceiling designs
and paintings, tapestries and murals. In this Church it lacks those artworks, suggesting to add
ornaments to the interior and exterior of the building to make it more look sacred. The current
design of the ceiling is a blue-painted finish, though it has an arc ceiling it still lacks murals.
Window design of the current building is a green-stained glass, as an alternative the windows
should have a more decorative window design. Art glass, etched glass, and faceted glass
windows should be used instead of just a plain stained glass.
ACOUSTICS AND SOUND SYSTEM

Acoustics is an important element in the design of the Church, the sound system inside
the church can be seen on each side of the aisles. The speakers should be placed between the
aisles and the nave. The acoustics inside the building could be better if the ceiling is higher and
some of the materials used in the interior should be able to reflect and absorb sound to have
better reverberation.
