WHAT’S IN

Trees can be propagated in two different methods: sexual and asexual

propagation. Sexual propagation is the method wherein the seeds of the mother plant can be
used to multiply the same kind of plant. Asexual propagation is the method wherein plant
parts like suckers, tubers, runners, leaves and roots are used to propagate the mother plant.
Several trees and fruit bearing trees in the Philippines can be propagated
using the sexual or asexual propagation.

WHAT IS IT

ELEMENTS TO BE OBSERVED IN PLANTING TREES AND FRUIT BEARING

TREES
Planting just like cooking requires systematic way of doing things. It requires a step-by step
procedure on hot to select and prepare the soil, seedlings, tools and the location for planting.

1
With these, all that is needed is the appropriate knowledge and skill on how to do the
planting process and the manner on how plants are to be taken cared of.
1. CLIMATE- is the most important factor affecting the growth of trees and fruit bearing
trees. It has been observed that varieties of trees grow best in certain climatic condition.
2. TEMPERATURE- the growth of plants depend upon the degree of how cold or hot the
atmosphere is at a certain period of time.
3. SUNLIGHT- the main energy provider in the process of food manufacture in the plant
kingdom.
4. RAINFALL- is very important in the growth of all kinds of trees, however, it must be
controlled or moderate so as not to flood and drown the growing trees with water.
5.SOIL- the medium for growing in the trees which provides nutrients in plants as it contains
mineral elements necessary for normal plant growth and development of the trees.
6.MINERAL SOIL- composed of inorganic substances with varying amounts of decaying
organic matter.
a. ORGANIC SOIL- is formed from partly decayed plant materials.
7. FERTILIZERS- are added to soil to increase its productivity.
a. ORGANIC FERTILIZER- comes from compost of decayed fruit and vegetable
peelings, animal manures, and food washing.
b. INORGANIC FERTILIZER- are made of synthetic materials and are substitute of
organic fertilizer.

Planting trees requires careful study of various factors to ensure its proper adaptability
and growth. These factors in planting trees and fruit-bearing trees are to be considered
importantly to achieve success in this industry.

MARKET DEMAND FOR FRUITS

https://www.google.com/search?ei=G8IHYPu-JtXm-
AaYqZvYBw&q=seasonal+availability&oq=seasonal+ava&gs_lcp

Harvesting is picking fruits in their season when they are ready to be sold or eaten. It
is done at different seasons. Depending on the characteristics of each product. Generally,
fruits are picked when they are mature enough. Fruits should reach the market in good
condition.

Fruits like mangoes, banana and papaya are harvested before they ripen. They should
be green and matured.
Pomelos and chicos should be picked at the right size and maturity.
Native oranges or dalandans are picked while green, they will eventually ripen.

3
The major fruit species grown in the country are:
a) banana b) pineapple c) mango d) papaya
e) calamondin f) durian g) jackfruit h) lanzones

The Right Time to Harvest Depends on the Following Factors:

1. The price of Fruits in the Market

The beginning of harvest season of any fruit commands the highest price in the
market. This is because the fruits are new in the market and are not as abundant as
when they are in the peak of harvest season.
2. The distance of the farm to the market
Transportation comprises a big expenditure in marketing the products. The farther the
farm is to the market, the higher the transportation cost. Likewise, the rate of ripening
and deterioration maybe affected by the length of time it takes for the product to reach
the market.

3. The period of storage of harvested fruits before bringing them to the market
The longer the storage, the higher the risk of the fruits to deteriorate. When some
products become overripe and close to deteriorating, they cannot be sold at a higher
price than when they are fresh and at the right degree of maturity or ripeness.

Storing The Products

Proper storage of harvest is very important to keep them in good condition. Most
fruits when ripened are perishable so the rot or decay easily. Therefore, they should be
use or sold while still slightly ripe and firm.

To ensure success in selling fruit, the farmer or seller should consider the following
market demands:

1. Buyers select fruits and other products of good quality usually based on the size,
shape, and appearance.
2. Good quality has the same appearance, size, stage of maturity, state of freshness,
and shape.
3. Fruits should be in their freshest state when being sold. They can command higher
price.
4. Pack fruits properly in good containers to maintain their freshness and to avoid
cuts, bruises, and blemishes.
5. Price your products based on the current price in the market. Many customers
prefer to pay a higher price if they feel they are getting their money worth.

Ways of Marketing A Product

The retail method is better because farmers earn more profits this way.

4
1. Retail - this refers to the sale of goods in small quantities directly to the consumer.

2. Wholesale - this is the sale of goods in a relatively large quantity to be retailed by

others.

3. Consignment - this is an agreement to supply goods for a definite price and at a

specific time.
4. Announcement of products to the public.
5. Direct Selling to the market place.

https://www.google.com/search?ei=SMIHYMeYEpWvoATKpa6oDg&q=selling+fruits&oq=selling+fruits&gs_lcp

Marketing through cooperatives is the newest practice. Farmers from cooperatives in

order to earn higher profits, while consumers get the product at a lower price.

FAMOUS ORCHARDS IN THE PHILIPPINES

AN ORCHARD is an intentional plantation of trees or shrubs that is maintained for
food production. Orchards comprise fruit- or nut-producing trees which are generally grown
for commercial production. Orchards are also sometimes a feature of large gardens, where
they serve an aesthetic as well as a productive purpose. There are five famous orchards in the
country.
1. Rosa Farm is a 12.5-hectare mango-orchard in the coastal province of Zambales,
home to the Philippine Carabao Mango. The farm is an agri-tourism (farm tourism)
destination, and is open to walk-in guests who want to experience the ambiance of a
real functional farm.

2. Gapuz Grapes Farm started way back in the 80s. They first bought their first 100
cuttings, the White Malaga and Black Ribier grapes, from the 1st generation of grape
growers in their hometown Brgy. Urayong, Bauang, La Union.

3. Rock Farm Huddled about 5,000 feet above sea level, Sagada has an idyllic
temperature attracting tourists to flock their way to this quaint town in the Cordillera.
Besides the usual attractions Sagada offers, the place has quite established itself as the
home of the sweet Sagada Oranges. The weather of the town is regarded ideal for
growing what we Pinoys call “imported” fruits.

4. Philippine Mango Seedling Farm Corporation is a family owned and operated

agricultural enterprise located in the border of Candaba, Pampanga and Baliuag,
Bulacan. PMSFC is a wholesale nursery producing “carabao” mango seedlings
primarily for mango orchard farming, various conservation/education programs and
reforestation projects. Seed sources are concentrated in the province of Cebu where
superior quality seeds are sorted, individually inspected and undergo initial processing
before it is shipped to its main nursery farm.

6
5. Davao Golden Pomelo hailed as Davao’s pomelo king, Carmelito Mercado is
arguably the top pomelo producer and distributor in the Philippines. From his
humble beginnings as a trader, Mercado’s determination and thirst for
knowledge to improve his business has bore fruit.
