REFLECTION – KAMBAS NG LIPUNAN

“Art is a good medium to convey message to others and lead to something great.” Joey
Velasco's heartfelt oil on canvas painting Hapag ng Pag-asa (Table of Hope), which recalls the
famous painting "Last Supper," is a superb illustration of this phrase. In his painting Hapag ng
Pag-asa, he painted not just fictional children but real children that inspired him to create such
art with vivid colors, emotional strokes, and appealing drawings. Nene, Kitok, Emong, Dodoy,
Joyce, Sudan, Onse, Michael, Tinay, Buknoy, Jun, and Roselle, who were having a meal with
Christ, were the same children who have been neglected by our society. A chance to live a good
life, eat nutritiously, study, and prove themselves.
Based on what I witnessed, it was a true eye-opener for all of us. It conveyed the narrative of
millions of children who lived in a world deprived of color. The film made us appreciate all of
the memories we had with the people in our lives. It inspired us and reminded us to be grateful
for all of our blessings. The artwork demonstrated that we should be socially conscious. It lets
us take a look at how the world truly is.

If you were an artist, what kind of artist will you be?
If I’ll be an artist, I think I’ll be a dancer. I remembered when I was a kid, my mom would always
encourage me to join extra-curricular activities and dancing is one. During those times, I loved
the idea of you getting to wear costumes and make up as well as I get to spend time with my
friends more. But as time passes by, my priorities changed that is why I didn’t get the chance to
pursue it. Another thing is that I don’t have that enough confidence to perform in front of an
audience especially when I’ll be performing alone.

What art field will you explore and why?

I always wanted to explore visual arts, particularly photography. Photos can reflect who we are
as a human being. Sunsets and scenic places really have this thing that really caught my eye
whenever I see one. I want to show people that no matter what your situation is, something
beautiful will happen. I want to inspire other people and hopefully be able to lighten up
whatever burden they have as they see or look at my photographs. For I believe, beautiful
sceneries captured beautifully is truly fascinating and inspiring.
