Learning Style

Introduction

The ability of different individuals to acquire information or knowledge is varied based

on the environment or the personality of the individual. A learner's learning techniques and styles

may be composed of several combined styles, which could be applicable in a wide range of

circumstances (Truong). Regardless of how one presents themselves physically, it is important to

acknowledge that they are capable of developing specific learning styles based on their present

needs. In several institutions of learning, the educational curriculum gives learners the

opportunity to embrace their preferred learning styles ranging from class discussions, tutorials,

book or article-based learning, and tests or examinations. Recognizing an individual's own style

of learning is thus essential in improving the quality and speed of learning a given concept in

different environments. This paper aims to do a summary of the preferred learning styles, give a

clear description of the favorite strategies of learning, including the strategies that are related to

certain learning styles, and then highlight the importance of knowing an individual's style in

learning and teaching briefly.

The identified learning style of preference is the multimodal learning style (VARK

Learning Style Questionnaire). The multimodal learning predilection or partiality has distinctive

attributes such as the ability to learn information that comes in several forms, methods, or

communication channels. However, in this category, the largest is Visual due to its highest

scores. For such learners, it is imperative that the material contains or includes certain elements

such as visual arts and written elements to be easily understood and effectively analyzed by the

learners. It also implies that the learners prefer using discussions and trial and error to effectively

learn a concept. It also implies that the learners prefer learning using other elements such as

diagrams, graphs, and maps (Truong). The learners may also use practical exercises, real case

studies, questioning, listening, and group discussions to learn to boost their learning experience.

Preferred strategies for learning

Individuals who embrace the multimodal style of learning may also have several other

strategies of learning. Naming some of these strategies may be impossible. However, the first

technique is articles and textbook reading that contain many visual elements of different types.

Another technique is using PowerPoint Presentations that contains clearly written materials and

visual elements such as pictures, tables, graphs, and other illustrative diagrams to enable the

learner to grasp information without challenges. The preferred strategy in this context is using

mind maps and notes during events such as lectures and during group discussions to ensure that

the individual has the opportunity to experience themselves with colleagues concerning their

learning experience. However, even though there are no several identified strategies of learning

by an individual, they are significant for an individual who embraces or prefers a multimodal

learning style and would want to work simultaneously with other varying formats of the provided

data or information.

How degree of performance is affected by learning styles

The degree of performance is affected by learning styles in that the better the style of

learning, the higher the performance of the individual in educational activities. Individuals who

are yet to learn to integrate their learning styles with activities in an educational environment

find it difficult to improve their performance in various educative forums in which they are

involved (Willingham et al.). Educators need to investigate the learning styles when working

with learners since they would comprehend the most applicable techniques as they impart them

with information and knowledge, thus improving the performance of the individual.

Importance of understanding an individual's learning styles

It is essential to understand the learning styles of an individual, and the selected strategies

are key in significantly improving the learning and teaching skills of an individual. Concerning

learners, it is important to mention that applying preferred learning strategies is important in

ensuring that the learner synthesizes facts and promotes effective retention of information an

individual learns. However, many learners are unaware of the types of preferences related to

their learning. For this reason, it is critical to use instruments similar to VARK Questionnaire to

ensure that the learners become aware of their preferences, thus improving the quality of learning

(Bokhari and Zafar). Besides, the learning styles of health promotional material recipients may

impact behavior change in that the more the health promoter is aware of the learning style of the

recipient, the more the likelihood of behavioral change (Bokhari and Zafar).

Various learning styles are accommodated in health promotion by incorporating

promoters with experience and who are experts in their field of specialization. For instance, it is

easier for a promoter specialized in educating multimodal learners about the topic or product of

discussion to convince the learners to use their language (Bokhari and Zafar). It is also

considered a source of unity among the health promoters since they work as a group to ensure

building clients in different fields.

Conclusion

Upon completion of the VARK Questionnaires, it is important for an individual to assess

the learning strategies mentioned to address the needs of different individuals. Different

combinations such as kinesthetic, aural, visual, and read-and-write strategies are provided for

individuals that prefer multimodal learning styles. This implies that learners have the ability to

interlink different ways of acquiring information and also have an increased preference for using

touch, body, and listening as a method of learning. This is important because learning styles can

negatively or positively impact an individual's performance in an educational environment. It is

also important to comprehend an individual's learning styles in health promotion as it increases

the popularity of the topic or product in question among the public through implementing

behavioral changes.
