CHAPTER 3 Social Science Theories and Their Implications to Education

Intended Learning Outcome:

At the end of this Chapter, the students must be able to explain three social science theories and their
implications to education.

2.a) Choose any object in the room to symbolize your care for someone. Keep the meaning to yourself.
Give that symbol to someone in class.

✓ Teacher's dest I chose that object because it is the only place where our teacher may sit or relax for
a brief moment, and I am concerned for her/him every time she/he sits in that spot; she/he can
appear exhausted, happy, or simply maintain a poker face.

b) Ask someone the meaning he or she gave to your symbol. Is this the same definition you originally
gave?

✓ The symbol given by my brother is eraser because even though there are many mistakes in
life, I am ready to erase it and change it correctly. We are not the same given to each
other.symbol because I chose Teacher dest and my brother's eraser

Analysis – Let’s analyze the Song

1.According to the song what are connected?

2.What do you expect if these bones are connected? Does malfunctioning of one bone affect the other
bone?

✓ Bones are fastened to other bones by long, . Cartilage a flexible, rubbery substance in our joints,
supports bones and protects them where they rub against each other.A number of disorders affect the
skeletal system, including bone fractures and bone cancers. The two most common disorders of the
skeletal system are osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Osteoporosis is an age-related disorder in which
bones lose mass, weaken, and break more easily than normal bones.
3.In Activity #2 was the meaning that you gave to your symbol the same with the meaning that the
receiver gave? If not, hoe did this affect you? Do you feel you were misunderstood?

✓ The symbols we choose are not the same but even though we are not the same as the symbols we
still understand each other because they are beautiful The meaning of the symbols we give to each
other , because for me the symbols are what prove your character in ourselves .

Application – Let’s Apply

1. The purposes of schooling according to the functionalist theory are:

1.Intellectual purposes – acquisition of cognitive skills, inquiry skills

2.Political purposes – educate future citizens; promote patriotism; promote assimilation of immigrants;
ensure order, public civility and conformity to laws.

3.Economic purposes – prepare students for later work roles; select and train the labor force needed by
society.

4.Social purposes – promote a sense of social and moral responsibility; serve as a site for the solution or
resolution of social problems; supplement the efforts of other institutions of socialization such as the
family and the church.

Cite how schools at present are working on the realization of these 4 purposes as cited by the
functionalists.

✓The functionalist perspective sees society as a complex system whose parts work together to
promote solidarity and stability. This approach looks at society through a macro-level orientation and
broadly focuses on the social structures that shape society as a whole.

2. Adherents to the conflict theory claim that schools teach loyalty so that those in power remain in
power and those below will forever be at the bottom. Do you agree? Why or why not?

✓ Social conditioning at school may have a role but as the kids become educated, in a free society,
they soon wriggle their way out from under that yoke.

3. Individuals act based on meaning. This meaning is based on individuals’ experiences. Meanings
change. Give two implications of these symbolic interactionist thoughts to education.

✓ One implication is control people’s actions by teaching them your meanings.Teaching people to find
their own meanings and you will not be able to control their actions, they will control themselves
Let’s Reflect

1.Based on the lesson on symbolic-interactionist theory and the movie, The Little Prince, what does this
quote mean: “Words are a source of misunderstanding.” Any personal message? Write it down.

✓ Based on the lesson of symbolic-interactionist theory and the movie, The Little Prince, what does
this quote mean: "Words are a source of misunderstanding". ... That is why words can become a
source of misunderstanding that may result in conflicts.
