I. Course Objectives:
At the end of the course, the students acquire the following:
Competence
a. understand various concepts of language and primary issues in linguistics
b. understand the importance of linguistic knowledge and theories to the teaching of
English
c. conduct (simple, straightforward) analyses on English linguistic data.
Conscience
1. gain more awareness on the linguistics phenomena
2. improve their responsibility and autonomy in executing various tasks

III. Evaluation: Final grades are determined by the quiz and test average score, the
fulfillment of minimum attendance, and the completion of assignments.

IV. Learning-Teaching Activities:


The classroom activities consist of lectures, discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and
group-presentations. The class procedure typically starts with a 30-minute group
presentation and a 15-minute follow-up discussion. The last 45-minutes, are spent on the
lecturer's treatment on the topic of the day. In group presentations, each group must
summarize the assigned topic and present the summary in the form of a power-point
document (not in a paper-form). The maximum slide number is 10. Students' outside-
classroom activities consist of text-reading, homework completion, and power-point
presentation preparation.
