Abstract

The process of converting discarded paper into new paper goods is known as paper

recycling. It is possible to make a significant difference by recycling paper and

transforming it into usable things at home or at school. Apart from preventing trees from

being destroyed, it has a variety of other important benefits.

The study in-titled " Creative Crafts: An Output Project of Recycling Paper was to

conceptualized to make a usable item/ crafts from recycled papers. It aimed to provide

idea that making innovative this project can help to manage the amount of paper

wastes and specifically to sought answers to the queries such as follows; What is the

advantages of recycling paper? How effective is recycling paper to combat against

environmental issues? How beneficial are these home-made crafts made from recycled

paper?

The majority of the materials used were reusable, cost-effective, and easily

accessible. The null hypothesis was stated 'Recycling paper and turning it into crafts is

not effective in reducing paper wastes.

As the recycled crafts/items go through multiple trials and modifications, the

researchers attentively noted how they become practical and valuable. They began by

tearing the paper into small pieces and soaking it in water for about 8 minutes. Second,

they separate the paper that needs to be squeezed from the water. They then combined

the wet paper with either glue or flour to make a paste. Finally, you'll need to get any

molder you like and wait a day or two for the recycled craft to dry completely.

With the outcomes of the functionality testing of the innovation, researchers

concludes that the recycled paper crafts/ items is effective and beneficial to lessen the

amount of paper wastes. Thus, the null hypothesis stated was rejected in as much as
the Recycled Paper Crafts was proven functional and of great help to those who cannot

afford new items that can be use inside their homes.

CHAPTER I

Background of the Study

We are in the midst of an environmental crisis, which we are witnessing

not just today but every day. We've noticed that Our Mother Earth is currently

dealing with several environmental issues, including air and water pollution, climate

change, global warming, and etc. It is extremely concerning for us because it has the

potential to create a variety of major health issues. According to the EPA, Paper

makes up about 28 percent of solid trash in landfills and one ton of paper takes

up about 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space. Making new goods out of recycled

materials uses less energy than mining and processing new resources.

Sure, recycling is important, but if we reduced what we were using and

reused what we were using in place of single-use options, there would be

significantly less stuff in the world to recycle. And less stuff is key to — not to get too

hyperbolic here but — saving the planet.(Osmanski, 2020). Recycling is important,

but many of us may not understand why we're "supposed" to do it.

Some people do not know how to recycle paper, as we have seen in the

Municipality of Glan. As a result, everything will just be thrown away. Even teens

are unaware of the need of paper recycling, which is sad. That is why we wanted

to communicate, educate, and promote the importance of recycling, particularly

among the youth. Recycling of waste paper has several benefits, both for

humans and the earth (Bajpai, 2006; Putz, 2006; Sappi, 2011). Recycling paper

reduces the volume of waste while helping to boost the local economy through the

collection and sorting of waste paper. ( Jain&Webb, 2012) Teaching their children

about the benefits of recycling paper can help them promote a clean environment

and a healthy lifestyle Parents or teachers even teenagers can teach the people

to create usable items like organizers, lamp shades, coffee paper, glass, plates,

eggtrays and etc..

This study clarifies and broadens our perspectives on how we might

encourage youth to recycle paper. Also, teaching them on the necessity of

recycling and its influence on the environment. These, on the other hand, will

serve as a first step for us students in encouraging the youth to protect Mother

Earth .

Our generation is highly aware of the events unfolding around us, and we want

to make a difference not just for ourselves, but for the entire globe. We will need

everyone's help in order to make these adjustments.

As a result, the researchers were able to motivate people to recycle in order

to combat the environmental crisis.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to explore and understand how recycling paper and converting it into

crafts can help the environment and make a significant difference.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the advantages of recycling paper?

2. How effective is recycling paper to combat against environmental issues?

3. How does this benefits the youth and the future generations?

Significance of the Study

This study aimed to provide valuable information and can benefit the entire society,

particularly in terms of teaching the youth about the recycling process. Also, by

recycling paper, we may create useful items that we can utilize on a daily basis.

For the public as a whole. This will assist them in comprehending the process of paper

recycling and how it contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions that

contribute to climate change.

For the learners and future researchers. This study will aid in the development of their

creativity as well as their understanding of how recycling can benefit current and future

generations.
Lastly, this paper can serve as a related literature for future researchers who plan to

explore the same topic

Scope and Delimitation

The researchers project in-titled “ Creative Crafts: An Ouput Project of Recycling

Paper” is delimited to the salient feature of recycled crafts and how it will enhance both

our environment and the creativity of the youth. This research focused on the

advantages of recycling paper and converting it into crafts.

This will be conducted within first semester of School Year 2021-2022 by the STEM

students of Glan School of Arts and Trades especially group six.

CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature

This chapter is the Review of the Related Literature that discusses various related

literatures, studies, and articles about the importance of recycling paper to create

usable items

According to (Sukalich,2016), in 2011, the United States recycled 66.8% of their paper

consumption. More paper is recovered for recycling than plastic, aluminum, and glass

combined, and every ton of paper recycled saves more than 3.3 cubic yards of landfill

space. Considering 87 percent of us have access to curbside or drop-off recycling for

paper, we're used to recycling it. Furthermore, in 2011, 76 percent of paper mills

included some recovered material, suggesting that the paper you throw away is making

its way into a variety of new goods. The process of transforming old paper into new

paper may seem to be complex, but it is actually quite simple. Paper recycling, on the

other side, allows people to save both energy and materials on a large scale. According

to the EPA, recycling one ton of paper saves 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, and 463

gallons of oil. After five to seven recycling processes, the fibers become too short to

produce new paper and must be mixed with fresh fibers. From the American Forest &

Paper Association, each man, woman, and child in the United States recovered an

average of 338 pounds of paper for recycling in 2011. (AF&PA). You can help maintain

this number high by learning how the process of recycling paper works and what you

can do to ensure recycled paper does not wind up in a landfill. There are five

fundamental paper quality classifications. You may stumble across these terms from

time to time, and it's possible that you'll need to understand the distinction.
According to the inConfidence in this article, paper is everywhere in our environment,

and it comes in a variety of sizes, shapes, and textures. As a result, there's little doubt

that paper makes up the majority of the garbage collected each day. As a result, a

strategy for resolving the garbage problem caused by the large volume of waste papers

in the waste was developed. After that, it was recommended that the waste paper be

recycled. Because paper takes up 35% of all trash, waste paper recycling is significant.

Afterwards, a paper recycling station was set up. The waste paper recycling procedure

takes place in the paper recycling station. The wasted paper is recycled and then used

to make fresh paper and other paper products in this facility. Paper recycling is

important because it can help reduce the quantities of waste or garbage collected each

day.

According to the National Cleantech Conference & Exhibition (April 3, 2019), Though

the objective of recycling was originally to reduce the need to remove new resources

from the environment regularly, it now provides much more. Recycling is now widely

used to maintain the environment clean for humans and wildlife by minimizing garbage

sent to landfills, conserving energy, and reducing the environmental effect of new

product development by using existing resources that may be reused and repurposed.

And on the recycling and sustainability, they stated that as new technologies are

discovered to help recycle nearly everything, including metal, plastic, and water,

recycling has become a significant aspect of technology development. The ability to

recycle garbage helps towns, communities, and countries identify themselves. A city

with a well-designed and efficient recycling system is seen more favorably than one that

pollutes the environment. As the concept and necessity of recycling become more

widely accepted, it is critical to continue emphasizing the impact on sustainability. The

Recycling wood materials, for example, eliminates the need to cut down additional

trees. It also aids in the preservation of watersheds, biodiversity, and soil stability. When

it comes to nonrenewable resources, sustainability encompasses more than just the

concept of resource depletion. Recycling nonrenewable resources, on the other hand,

helps to keep the environment clean, improve human health, and increase biodiversity

resilience. Recycling is essential to sustainability because it prevents reusable

resources from ending up in landfills. It aids in the reduction of ecosystem pollution, as

when plastic and metallic materials are recycled, land that would otherwise have been

used and contaminated by their landfill can be used for other more sustainable

purposes. Recycling aluminum cans, for example, is critical to preserving the rainforests

that are frequently removed from mining bauxite. It also aids in the reduction of

aluminum processing expenses.

It is common knowledge that the processing of paper production has significant

environmental consequences. On the other hand, there are technologies that can

reduce negative environmental effects while also having a good economic benefit. One

of these processes is recycling, which is more than just the disposal of waste. The

primary benefit of recycling is a double reduction in environmental loading, often known

as a reduced environmental impact. From the first point of view, natural resources are

conserved at the input side of the manufacturing process; from the second point of view,

the amount of dangerous chemicals seeping into the environment is reduced at the

output side of the manufacturing process.( Cabalova, Kacik, Geffert,& Kacikova,2011))

In 2005, Europe produced 99.3 million tonnes of paper, resulting in 11 million tonnes of

waste, which is around 11% of total paper production. During the same time frame, 47.3

million tonnes of recycled paper were produced, resulting in 7.7 million tonnes of solid

waste (about 70% of total generated waste in the papermaking industry), contributing

for 16% of total production from this raw material (CEPI 2006). Paper made from

recycled fibers uses less energy and conserves natural resources such as trees. wood

and minimizes pollution in the environment In recent research programs for waste

management system planning, the relationship between economic optimization and

environmental preservation has gotten a lot of attention. In reverse logistics system

planning, this has also resulted in a set of new waste management targets. To capture

the inter-relationships among the paper recycling network system, Pati et al. (2008)

proposed a mixed integer goal programming (MIGP) model. The use of this method can
benefit the environment indirectly while also improving the quality of waste paper that

reached the landfill. (Cabalova, Kacik, Geffert,& Kacikova,2011)

Art and recycling goes hand-in-hand. Eco-artists are, nowadays, transforming old,

recycled and resued object into amazing pieces of contemporary art. The trend started

gaining prominence in 1980s when museums and galleries in the Western world

opened their doors for such innovation and creativity.

In recent years, many artists in the Middle East has started expressing their support for

recycling and sustainability through artworks where they merge traditional tone with

contemporary themes creating attractive installation art that express local cultural

heritage in the larger public interests. Artists are expressing their emotions and ideas

through a wide range of recyclables glass, cans, plastics, CDs, PET bottles etc.

Due to technological developments, there is an increasing variety of new applications

for recovered paper both within and outside the paper and board industry such as

newsprint as well as printing and writing paper (Hyvärinen, 2001). Recycled paper and

cardboards are widely used in Egypt in the manufacture of local craft and cardboard as

well as board egg trays (El-Haggar, 2001).

CHAPTER III

Methodology

This study is focused on the current environmental dilemma and how to address

it through the recycling of paper into useable products. It also hopes to

determine whether or not this method is successful and usable. This chapter will

cover topics such as materials, process, and statistical analysis.

Research Procedure Flowchart

Examining the various materials that could be used to make the

recycled item more sturdy and difficult to damage.

Purchasing and gathering the chosen materials.

Running some tests to see if they are durable with or without glue or
flour.
Making the chosen object with the finished mixture that will allow the
research to be successful.

As shown in the flowchart, the recycling process begins with identifying potential

materials and conducting a test to see if they will become durable with or

without the addition of glue and flour to the mix. As a result of the experiment,

the recycled object without glue or flour is readily damaged, whereas the thing

with glue and flour remains intact. Water, glue, or flour (depending on what was

available) were mixed with the used paper. All of it was combined together until

it formed a paste, which was then shaped into the desired object. It takes 2-4

days to complete the manufacture. Also, the sunlight creates a vital role in

completing this research. The item was then put through a series of tests, like

throwing it and so on, to determine its durability. The items by recycling paper

was built to reduce the waste, decrease waste and prevent major health

problems. Also, in teaching youths on how to be responsible on recycling.

Results and Discussion

This chapter contains presentation of the results and discussion of the study.

The study indicate that recycling paper and turning it into crafts has a significant

environmental impact while also enhancing our creative minds. Furthermore, the

recycled crafts from paper scratch demonstrate that it is useful.

Reusing materials for new purposes can save a considerable amount of money.

With an average family in the western world producing a ton of waste each year,

recycling is one activity where just one family (or one person) can make a genuine

difference. (Lober, D., 2018). Recycling paper saves landfill space and reduces the

amount of pollution in the air from incineration. ( Bajpai, 2006)

1. What is the advantages of recycling paper?

- Recycling paper is easier than recycling plastics, also it is reusable. Recycling

paper has several advantages, including saving energy, water, and landfill space.

Paper recycling lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and recovered fiber is a cost-

effective, long-term resource for producing new paper products.

2. How effective is recycling paper to combat against environmental issues?

- Paper recycling aids in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions that

contribute to climate change.

Recycling paper uses 70% less energy and water than growing new trees and

producing new paper. Smog-causing pollution is reduced by using recycled

paper in manufacturing (and ill health).

Best of all, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, recycling one ton

of paper saves 17 trees and more than 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space.

3. How beneficial are these home-made crafts made from recycled paper?

In this instance, you won't need to buy organizers for your belongings if you

make your own crafts out of recycled paper at home. It not only saves money,

but it also helps the environment by lowering the amount of paper that ends up in

our landfills. According to the EPA, recycling paper causes 35 percent less water

pollution and 74 percent less air pollution than making paper from raw materials.

Recommendation

Based on the conclusion generated in the study the following recommendations

were hereby presented. First, to the general public, the study's findings are guaranteed

to be relevant in the future for any innovations that perform similarly to the originals.

Next, to student researchers, this gives them knowledge and ideas to be more

innovative and creative using indigenous and recycled materials around them. Then, to

the peopl, this will serve as their eye opener that recycling and reusing old paper and

other materials can create new innovations. Finally the researchers suggested that

anyone can innovate wasted materials and make use of technical knowledge to come

up with a useful object.
