Design of Grouted Rock Anchors

REFERENCE : IS : 14448 : 1997

The load carrying capacity of the anchor/bolt will be governed by the worst of the following three
failure criteria

CASE 1. Failure of the anchor in tension

Dia of reinforcement = d 25.00 mm
Tensile strength of the steel = sst 500.00 Mpa
Factor of safety for steel = Fs 1.30
Load carrying capacity = F1 =sst.p.d2/(4.Fs) 188.80 kN

CASE 2. Failure of the bond between between Grout and Anchor

Bond strength between anchor and grout = ta=fc/10 <2.5 Mpa 1.50 Mpa
Factor of safety = Fa 1.50
Length of anchor = L 3.00 m
Load carrying capacity = F2 =p.d.L.ta/Fa 235.62 kN

CASE 3. Failure of the bond between between Grout and Rock

Safe Bond strength between rock and grout = tf 0.81 Mpa
Factor of safety = Fg ( ranges from 3 - 5 ) 3.00
Length of anchor = L 3.00 m
Dia of Hole = D=1.5*d 37.50 mm
Load carrying capacity = F2 =p.D.L.tf/Fg 95.15 kN

So, Ultimate Load carrying capacity, P = Minimum of F1 , F2 & F3 95.15 kN

Based upon the sample calculation shown above the load carrying capacity of the anchors (in kN )
having different dia and length is tabulated below for following strength parameters

sst = 500 Mpa ta = 1.50 Mpa tf = 0.81 Mpa

Fair to Good Rock 41 - 80 0.70 - 1.05 N/mm2
Very Good Rock 81 - 100 1.05 - 1.40 N/mm3

anchor bars and plain anchors bars respectively

ii) The fixed anchor langth shall not be less than 2, 3, 4 and 5 m for very good, good, fair, poor
and very poor rock conditions respectively.

NOTE: In CASE 3, the Safe Bond strength has been taken same for all depths (50,100 & 150m)
i.e. for RMR = 50, which falls in the region of fair to good rock of RMR range 41-80 of table
for safe bond strength of IS:14448:1997
