Brief History of Volleyball


*Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, physical director of the
Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Massachusetts. It was
design as an indoor sport for businessmen who found the new game of
basketball too vigorous.

Why is it called volleyball?


-Volleyball was called Mintonette because of its similarity with badminton.
However , Alfred Halstead later renamed it to volleyball because the objective
of the game was to voley the ball back and forth over a net. Morgan studied at
the Springfield College of the YMCA, where he met James Naismith.

B. THE FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT


The volleyball court is 60 feet in total. The net in placed in the center of the
court, making each side of the net 30 feet by 30 feet. The basic equipment you
will require for indoor volleyball are court shoes, but knee pads and ankle
braces are regularly used by many players is well. For beach (outdoor)
volleyball there is no special equipment required but you will need to plan for
sun protection and hydration.

D. BASIC VOLLEYBALL RULES FOR PLAYING THE GAME
* 6 players on the team, 3 on the front row and 3 on the back row.
* Maximum of three hits per side.
* player may not hit the ball twice in succession (A block is not considered a
hit?

during a volley and on a

E. THE OFFICIATING OFFICIALS AND ITS DUTIES

*First referee

-waits while an injured players gets attended to. The first referee watches the blockers for net touches , calls the double hits, lifts, technical
fouls, timeouts and starts each play with a ehistle bloe to each server.

*Second referee

-stand next to the post opposite the first referee. In addition to assisting the first referee eith determining faults throughout the game, the
second referee is in charge of all substitution, timeouts and the actions of scores table.

*Assistant scorer

-prepares the Libero control sheet, preoares the reserve scoresheet. During the match, the assistant scorer: Records the details of the Libero
replacements, notifies the referees of any fault of the Libero replacements. By using the buzzer stars and ends the timing of Technical Time-out.

*Line judges

-stand st the corners of the court eatching the lines to indicate whether a ball in play falls in or out of the court. If a server steps on the line
during a serve, the line judges watching the given notifies the referees using a flag.
