CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Social Media has made our life quite easy and convenient and it keeps us

always informed of the latest happenings in our environment and surroundings.

With the help of social media, there will be endless possibilities for every

individual to connect and communicate with other people globally. Almost

everyone has a social media profile on social platforms nowadays. Almost all

peoples' lives are dependent on and influenced by social media. Social media

hours spent can be bothersome for people because it sometimes leads to

addiction. However, most people are concerned about how it keeps us away

from reality, and living through the virtual communication only that leads us to a

lack of interpersonal communication in real life. It also affects our psychological

health, the more we use social media it consumes our time to look at those fake

definitions of cultural beauty and standards, it only leads us to self rumination. In

this digital world, people look at their smartphones, use them for some time

within a few minutes of waking up, just a few minutes or less than a minute

before sleeping, and also in between the time of waking and sleeping. They are

using social media almost every time. While doing various activities throughout

the day, updating status, or posting activities. This increasing amount of time

spent on smartphones browsing and scrolling through social media has become

a major concern for everyone.

1
According to a study conducted in 2019 by Ms. Aachal Taywade and Dr.

Rupashree Khubalkar states that “Spending excessive time on a smartphone

could be a manifestation of one’s propensity to mental illnesses, thus, can be

helpful to make plans for prevention of adolescents from future mental illnesses

and healthily deal with their life.” In one research, smartphone addiction was

significantly correlated with depression and anxiety (Boumosleh & Jaalouk,

2017). Another research explains that smartphone addiction disturbs one’s sleep

quality and contributes to increased anxiety and increases depression (Chen et

al., 2017). Sleep quality is negatively hampered due to excess smartphone

usage. Another reason for this may be that students who spend more time on

social media may have difficulty balancing their online activities and their

academic preparation. Since students tend to spend more time on social media

than educational purposes; this tends to cause distraction from the learning

environment, affecting their academic progress (Bekalu et al., 2019,

Hettiarachchi, 2014).

With the continuous use of social media, students may weaken or

eventually lose their capability to connect or be involved socially the way people

do when face-to-face. This is even true with video call meetings and conferences

because a large portion of body language can not efficiently be translated

through video projections only.

2
Therefore, researchers were curious to find the total number of hours

spent using social media and its effects on the senior high school students of

Swiss Montessori School. The present study was conducted to know the hours

on social media the students spent and to give awareness on how these affect

the students' academic and personal life.

3
Statement of the Problem

This study was aimed to determine the total number of hours a senior high

school student of Swiss Montessori School spent a day using social media

platforms.

More specifically, this study aimed to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

a. Age

b. Gender

2. How many hours does a senior high student of Swiss Montessori

School spend a day on social media?

3. How does the time spent on social media affect the students’ mindset?

4. How does social media impact their academic performances?

5. What are the influences of using social media in students’ daily lives?

FIGURE I. Conceptual Paradigm of the Study

The figure above shows the conceptual paradigm of the study. On the first

box, the researchers presented the statement of the problem with the study. This

includes the profile of the respondents according to their age and gender. It also

includes the time spent on social media, which can either have a positive or

negative effect on the students' mindsets. Also considered is the impact of social

factors on their academic performance. The second box indicates the processes

involves the conduct of the study, these includes the survey and the analysis of

data through questionnaire. The third box shows the output of which is the time

spent on social media per day by senior high school students.

6
Research Hypothesis

The Figure II. above shows the relationship of the variables, which shown

above that the number of hours spent on social media has something to do with

poor academic performances since when we waste our time mindlessly on

internet and scrolling through media we tend to neglect or make excuses for

doing our school works so it can result to a poor academic performance affected

by too many hours using social media; unproductivity is also related because we

tend to procrastinate and not do anything when we are so focusing on social

media, we forgot to do the most important task of the day; poor behavior to some

teens are also connected by the usage of social media, we are influenced to

some of the media we view and we project that behavior sometimes such as a

7
violent behavior we can see from social media we can be trigger by that; socially

unskillful is also one related to the usage of social media, the longer time we

spent on social media the more we disconnect to the real world, we don’t

socialize more often that leads to detracting to face to face interactions, lack of

outdoor activities that often leads to a sedentary lifestyle behavior.

8
Importance of the Study

Students needs to be aware of how the long hours spent using social

media can impact their lives, academic performances, and even their mindsets,

for them to have the proper social media etiquette, be informed of its harmful

effects and use it wisely. This study is carefully planned to know the total number

of hours a Senior High School Student of Swiss Montessori School Spent a day

on Social Media.

Therefore, this study is deemed significant to the following persons for the

following reasons:

● To the STUDENTS- this study will give them an idea of the effects of long

hours spent using social media on their academic performances and

productivity doing school works.

● To the TEENAGERS- these may guide them to the proper way of

spending time on social media and the right way of using it for good

reasons.

● To the SOCIAL MEDIA ENTHUSIASTS- the result of this study will help

them to be aware of the possible negative effects of too much usage and

engagement on social media.

● To the PARENTS- this study will serve as a guide for them to understand

the impacts of too many hours on social media on their child’s social life.

● To the FUTURE RESEARCHERS- with the help of this research, this will

provide baseline data needed for future research and studies related to

this one.

9
Scope and Limitations of the Study

This research paper entitled “The Total Number Of Hours a Senior High

School Student Of Swiss Montessori School Spent a Day On Social Media” aims

to determine the total number of hours a senior high school student of Swiss

Montessori School spent a day using social media platforms as well as for the

students to be aware of how the long hours spent using social media can impact

their lives, academic performances, and even their mindsets, be informed of its

harmful effects and to use it wisely. As we are browsing the social media

platforms, its either we get a positive or negative effects of it. It might benefit us

or not depends on how we properly use it and as long as how we follow the

etiquette of using medias. Twenty-five Senior High School students of Swiss

Montessori School, Inc. are chosen as respondents of the study.

However, this research does not seek to include and discuss about the

common problems or complications encountered by the students while browsing

the social media.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter examines the literature and research relevant to the hours spent

by students using social media as well as its impact to their life, behavior and

academic performances.

The following are the research literature that served as the basis in the

current research. This presents some local and foreign research conducted

related to the present research. These researches served as reference ground

for examining the hours spent of the students on social media.

LOCAL

The latest research (Zipagan, 2022) show that our society has been

influenced by social media. It has become an important part of our everyday lives;

from trends to news, we utilize social media to share our thoughts and express

ourselves. Filipinos utilize social media in excess when compared to other

nations; we are also one of the countries that is actively involved in promoting our

culture through media, to the point where it may be intrusive at times.

Similarly, in a research performed by Davao Doctors College students, they

discovered that senior high students' study habits are influenced by their time

management, study environment, and usage of social media, and that these

aspects have an impact on their academic achievement. (Arieta et al., 2017).

14
In the study of De Jesus et al., (2017), Social networking sites are defined as

places where you may create public or semi-public accounts within a framework

with your selected security settings. These social networking sites are well-

known among young people as a means of communication. Online social

networks and web blogs are clearly the most popular sites among young people.

As cited by Mangubat, K. et al, (2011-2012), with their research paper

entitled: ‘’Social Networking Sites and It’s Effects to Social Well- being of College

of Arts and Sciences Students University of Batangas’’ Social networking is one

of the most popular web-based activities in the Philippines, with Filipinos being

the most active users on a variety of web-based social networking sites.

According to Sawali, R. and Sevilla, R. (2017) with their research paper

entitled: ‘’Family Communication through Social Media among Students of

Batangas State University.’’ Filipinos see social media as a modern way of

communication. Filipinos and other folks may interact successfully and

conveniently with the use of social media. Filipinos like to utilize social media

because it is more efficient. Social networking may be the most efficient and

quick way to communicate with others. Students, too, utilize social media to do

the majority of their schoolwork. Social media has a deeper importance than

most people realize. In terms of social media development, social media

platforms such as Facebook have been around for decades. Social media

employs online and mobile technologies to transform communication into an

15
interactive discourse. One of the most significant benefits is the online exchange

of knowledge and information among various groups of individuals. Online

information sharing also encourages people to improve their communication

skills, particularly learners/students at educational institutions.

FOREIGN

Social media captures kids' attention and then diverts it to non-educational

and improper activities such as pointless talking and excessive online surfing.

Based on the above statement, we may conclude that social media can have a

negative impact on a student's study habits, academic life, and learning

experiences.(Kappuswamy and Shankar, 2010).

Furthermore, Sheldon (2008) stated that with such a huge growth in the

number of teenagers using social media throughout the world, a lot of worries

have been expressed by parents, religious leaders, politicians, and educators

about the unknown effects of social media on many parts of human existence. It

is therefore critical to monitor the impact of social media on their academic study

habits, which is a critical activity for them, particularly in the life of a student.

Students that spend too much time on social media and less time studying

their studies, on the other hand, have lower point grade point averages. Few

students are aware of the academic and professional networking opportunities

provided by the sites (Jeong, 2005)

16
According to (Osharive, 2015), in a research done at the University of Lagos

in Nigeria, social media has both beneficial and bad impacts on teens, mainly

those in high school. One of the negative consequences is a lack of privacy.

Distracting students from their academic work, consuming the majority of their

productive time, and occasionally developing hostile or violent conduct against

family, friends, and their social circle .Positive effects, on the other hand, such as

forming online communities to plan a project, having group discussions about

class material, or using social networking sites to keep in touch when a student

who has been absent needs to be updated on current academic information,

have benefits if used appropriately.

Olubiyi (2012) observed that today's students are so involved in social media

that they are online about 24 hours a day. Even in classrooms and lecture halls,

some students have been caught pinging or Facebooking while lectures are

taking place. Times that should have been spent studying, doing scholarly

research, and creating have been squandered by the need to meet new people

online and spend time discussing unimportant matters. As a result, most

students' academic performance suffers as a result of social media distraction.

17
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This chapter presents and discusses theories that are applicable to our study.

These theories helps explain the concept behind the research and establish the

relationship of the study’s variables.

This research was based on the theory The Uses and Gratification Theory,

this is an approach to understanding why and how people actively seek out

specific media to satisfy specific needs and was developed by Katz, Blumler, and

Gurevitch in the year 1974 However, McQuail (2010) claims that the hypothesis

may be dated back to when scholars began exploring why individuals listen in the

early 1940s to famous radio shows and why they read newspapers every day. As

a result, the hypothesis arose in response to the demand for explanation to why

individuals utilize particular media and what they get from them Mass The U & G

Theory is being used by communication scholars to investigate, explain and offer

solutions regarding why individuals utilize specific media and what they are

looking for rewards or gratifications people receive as a result.

This study was guided by the Social Learning Theory, an individual's local

environment has an impact on one's conduct (Bandura,1977). Bandura went on

to say that inappropriate conduct and replies repeated, viewed as genuine, one-

of-a-kind, deliberate, and Outstanding people are more likely to learn. The

development of an individual's socialization is hampered by abundant elements

in the environment, such as the Family, school, biological factors, and others all

have a role. In this section, The social conditions that are the most prevalent in

18
social education are the social situations that are the most common in social

education sites of mass media According to Social Learning Theory, Students,

friends, and surroundings all have an impact on a student's academic

performance. As a result, the usage of social media webs by Students' academic

success is influenced by their peers.

Further supporting this study is the theory of Technological Determinism

Theory, wherein this theory state that media technology shapes how we as

individuals in a society think, feel, act, and how the society operates as we move

from one technological age to another. Marshall Mcluhan established the idea in

1962. It describes how people learn and grow because of the signals they

receive through the present system, they feel and think the way we do

technology that is already accessible The radio, as an example, needed people

to listen and develop your hearing ability Television stimulates both the auditory

and visual senses. Then we transfer We want to bring those honed senses back

into our daily life. The medium consists of then comes our message. People must

listen in order to participate in social media, which has been made possible by

rising technology and frequently engaged People then interpret the social media

messages that are delivered to them in their own way in ordinary life. According

to the theory, as new technological systems are produced, the culture or

civilization changes. The senses required to operate the new technology were

quickly altered. According to the theory that society will alter and adapt to each

new media technology system technology. It explains that there is a

straightforward cause and effect relationship between the introduction and the

19
conclusion as a result of new technology and changes in society's way of thinking,

feeling, doing, or believing.

This research was based on the Klapper Reinforcement or Limited Effects

Theory, In 1960, Joseph Klapper at Colombia University, was worried that the

typical person overstated the influence of the media. He developed what he

referred to as phenominist theory. With this idea, he believed that media rarely

has direct impacts and is relatively impotent when compared to other forms of

communication with other social and psychological elements including social

standing, group participation, firmly held beliefs, education, and so on. According

to Klapper's theory, media does not normally serve as a necessary and sufficient

cause of audience effects, but rather acts among and via a nexus of mediating

elements and influences. Klapper's theory also presumes that mass

communication serves a purpose in the service of change; one of the two

prerequisites listed below is likely to exist.

This study is also supported by George Gerbner's Cultivation theory,

which serves as a guide to investigate the impacts and implications. Exposure to

the media, such as television, will establish and promote a more consistent

attitude about how the media represents a version of reality against what is

actually reality. According to Cultivation Theory, what the public sees on

television influences their attitude. Gerbner regards television as the world itself,

rather than a window or reflection of it. The electronic media is a potent

socialization agent that may educate and raise public awareness, and it can also

be a better source of support for student learning than other sources.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter covers the research design, population, sampling method,

and data collection procedure.

Research Design

This research used a descriptive research design of quantitative research

with specific survey techniques in gathering the data from the questionnaire to be

filled out by the student-respondents. The descriptive research design is

employed to know the profile of the respondents in terms of the social media

platforms they use, the time they spent using social media, how it affects their

academic performances, mindset, and its impact to their daily usage of social

media. Further, the research is descriptive design since the research is primarily

done to determine the total number of hours a senior high school student of

Swiss Montessori School spent a day on social media.

Population

This study involves 25 senior high school students from Swiss Montessori

School, Inc. who will answer the questionnaires in the academic year 2021-2022.

The subjects’ age ranged from 16-19 years old. There were more female than

male respondents.

21
Sampling Method

There are two (2) strands of Senior High School students at Swiss

Montessori School at present: Humanities and Social Sciences and Accountancy

and Business Management, with a total of 118 students. However, the

researchers will reduce the number of respondents using probability sampling.

So, for a total of 118 students, the researchers randomly selects 25 respondents

as sample size of each selection and the respondents of the study will answer

the survey questionnaire developed by the researchers.

Data Collection Procedure

A self-completion survey questionnaire was administered to

determine student respondents’ total number of hours spent on social medias

including its influence to their academic performances, mindset and personal

lives. Twenty-five students took the said survey.

The survey questionnaire was given to Senior High School students who

were enrolled for the S.Y. 2021- 2022. The researchers personally administered

the survey to secure the reliability and validity of the questionnaire.

23
CHAPTER IV

PRESENTATION, DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the analysis and interpretation of the data gathered

out of the questions responded by the selected Senior High School students of

Swiss Montessori School for school year 2021-2022. The data are presented in

tables with their corresponding analysis and interpretation in relation to the

problems presented earlier in Chapter 1.

Table 1. Profile of the Respondents

Table 1.1 Age of the Respondents

AGE FREQUENCY PERCENTAGE

As the Table 1.1 shows the profile of the respondents in terms of age. It is

obvious above that the 18 and 19 years old (64%) respondents are more than

those of 16 and 17 years of ages (36%). It can be concluded that the Senior High

School Students are commonly teenagers who is engaged in using social medias.

The result of the present research is congruent with the article of Newport

Academy (2021) where they presented a report, according to a report released in

24
2021 by Common Sense Media on social media’s effects on teens, about half of

the 1,500 young people surveyed said social media is very important for them in

order to get support and advice, feel less alone, and express themselves

creatively, as well as for staying in touch friends and family while social distancing.

And 43 percent said that using social media makes them feel better when they

are depressed, stressed, or anxious. Among LGBTQ youth, 52 percent said social

media helps them feel better when they are experiencing these difficult emotions.

Table 1.2 Gender of the Respondents

TOTAL 25 100%

The Table 1.2 above shows the gender of the respondents in the study

and resulted that there were more female (76%) respondents than the male (24%)

respondents in terms of the respondents’ gender. It can be concluded that there

were more female respondents using social media than male respondents. An

article posted by Aleksandra (2016) in Social Media Psychology stated that in

terms of gender, men are online to search for information, women use the

25
platforms predominantly to connect with people. Studies also show that men

open social media accounts to network and form new relationships, and women

– to sustain existing ones.

social media, which shown above that the 18 or 72% of the students spent 1-9

hours a day using social media while the other 7 or 28% spent a total of 10 hours

and more on social media. In terms of sleep hours the students get, the 25 or

100% got a 1-9 hours of sleep a day. While the hours of spent outdoors

26
disconnected, almost all the students are spending 1-9 hours a day outdoors

while the 4% of the respondents spent 10 hours and more outdoors. As we can

conclude from the result, the majority of the student spent a lot of time being

online on medias, in terms of sleeping all of the students’ get enough time of

sleep while being disconnected majority of them spent a lot of time outdoors. A

study by Nature Communications (2022) has shown that the use of social media

at a young age can have an impact on a teen's life at a later stage. The study

was conducted on more than 72,000 people, taking into consideration how much

time they spend on social media on a typical day. According to the study, 16 to

21 year olds who claimed to use social media for more than seven hours per day

reported lower life satisfaction than those who used it for up to three hours daily.

The Table 3 above shows the effects of using social media to the students’

mindset. Wherein we can notice the lower percentage of social media influencing

a students’ behavior and self comparing thoughts (16%), in terms of mood, there

are same rate of 6 (24%) that are not affecting their mood and still unsure. In

terms of emotional effects like feelings of uncomfortable and loneliness there is a

lower rate of 28% that are affected by these negative emotions due to social

media usage. It can be concluded that social media usage has really an effect to

28
students’ mindsets that can be also bothersome since it was affecting us

emotionally. According to a study of Christensen (2018) the more time an

individual spent on social media the more likely they were to experience a

negative impact on their overall emotional well-being and decreased quality in

their relationships. Emotional well-being also mediated the relationship between

time spent using social media and the quality of that user’s relationships,

meaning that the more time a person spent on social media the more likely their

emotional well-being declined which then negatively impacted their relationships.

The top three responses for negative effects of social media use on emotions

were frustration, depression, and social comparison. The top three responses for

negative effects of social media use on interpersonal relationships were

distraction, irritation, and decreased quality time with their significant other in

offline settings.

academic performances. As shown above, the majority 17 respondents (68%)

agreed that social media is a distraction in studying and only leads them to

procrastination of tasks, while in terms of poor academic performances and

achievement of low grades, there are 11 (44%) that agreed upon it. As a

conclusion, social media is also a factor for the students in focusing in studies,

productivity and achievement of good grades. As for what Belesti and Debela

(2019) stated in their study related to students academic performances linkage to

usage of social media, they showed that most students preferred to use

Facebook and YouTube to follow their friends posting and to watch video

30
contents of different programs respectively. Furthermore, the data output

revealed that students spent an average of 6.10 hours and 7.24 hours per day in

using different social media accounts than dealing with studying their academic

subject matters.

The Table 5 shown above shows the influences of social media usage to

the students’ daily lives. As for the result, 100% of the students find it convenient

31
for them to use social media as a means of communication to those in distant

with them, while majority of the 88% find it sometimes as too distracting in terms

of doing their daily tasks. In terms of socializing and life outdoors there is a 76%

of the respondents that sometimes find social media as a hindrance for them to

socialize outside and live life outdoors. As to conclude, social media could be

very useful as well for us in communication, but the abusive and too much use of

it affects our life, it keeps us away from our goal of finishing a daily chores or

tasks even our life outside it prevents us to socialize. An article written by Eiland

(2016) under the odyssey online states that students attempt to fully concentrate

and study, our phones are always by our sides, distracting us and breaking our

motivation. Even if we turn off our phones, our minds always have a thousand

tabs open, as we’re simultaneously thinking about what to eat for dinner, the test

next week, and the funny dog video on Facebook.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the conclusions drawn and recommendations

offered by the researcher.

Conclusions

1. It may be assumed that Senior High School Students are typically teens that

use social media. It may be concluded that female respondents utilized social

media more than male respondents.

2. The 18 , or 72 %, spent 1-9 hours every day on social media, while the other 7,

or 28 %, spent 10 hours or more. As a conclusion of the results, we can assume

that the majority of the students spent a lot of time online on medias, and in

terms of sleeping, all of the students got adequate sleep while being offline, and

the majority of them spent a lot of time outside.

3. It can be concluded that social media exposure has a substantial impact on

students' thoughts, which might be troublesome because it affects us mentally.

4. To summarize, social media has a role in students' ability to focus on their

academics, be productive, and get excellent scores.

5. To summarize, social media may be extremely valuable for us in

communication, but its abusive and excessive usage impacts our lives, keeping

us away from our aim of completing daily chores or duties, and even our life

outside of it hinders us from socializing.

33
Recommendations

The researcher advises the following based on the above-mentioned

findings:

1. Students should be mindful of using social media and learn the different

netiquettes for a proper usage of social media.

2. Students should be aware of the time they spent using social medias and limit

the usage since it was stated in the result that majority spent 1-9 hours of using

social media.

3. Students should maintain their adequate hours of sleep a day.

4. Students should make time for outdoor activities, that will balance their social

life instead of using social media all day.

5. Students should avoid consuming of too much social contents that affects their

emotions and thoughts in a negative way.

6. Since the mental health of the students are also a responsibility of the parents,

they should be informed and aware on the too much usage of social media to

their child’s emotions, academic life and physical health. Furthermore, they

should also guide their children in surfing internet, setting time limits if possible,

encouraging their child to spent more time with family outdoors.

7. Teenagers should only use social media on necessary reasons,

communications and positive ways if possible.

8. Further researches about this topic should be done to determine the different

cyber issues encountered by the students while using social media.

34
9. A follow study in this particular topic should be made in the same school to

determine the progress of the students progress and knowledge in utilizing social

medias.
