Theories of Personality
Assignment I
Kindly answer the following questions:

1. Give the Overview of Psychoanalytic Theory?


2. Summarize the Biography of Sigmund Freud
3. Enumerate and define/discuss the Levels of Mental Life

Levels of Mental life are classified into three. Developed by Sigmund Freud, he
thought that behavior and personality were derived from the constant and unique
interaction of conflicting psychological forces that operate at three distinct levels
and these are as follows:

Preconscious Mind – This is the middle part of the entire consciousness.


Memories were stored in this particular level and can still be accessed given to
that with a little difficulty. In addition, the preconscious level consists of things
that can be brought into the conscious mind potentially.

Conscious Mind – This level has all the memories, feelings and thoughts etc. of
which of that we are aware of the moment. This includes the minority of our
memories, which is not always part of the consciousness but can be easily
tapped or brought to awareness.

Unconscious Mind – This is the level wherein majority of our memories are
deeply stored. It contains context that are unacceptable or unpleasant such as
feelings (pain, anxiety and etc).

4. Enumerate and define/discuss the Provinces of the Mind


These known provinces of the mind were developed by Sigmund Freud himself.
Divided into three these were the ID. EGO and SUPEREGO

ID – It is the province that primarily based under pleasure principle. Coincide in


this are those things that we want and wishes are immediately satisfied minding
out consequences.

EGO – It is the province that is primarily based on the reality principles. It


mediates in between drives of id and the limits of superego. It aims to avoid
displeasure and pain.

SUPEREGO – It is the province that primarily dependent on learning the


difference among what is right and wrong. In easy terms, we associate morality

in superego and also it is where our conscience lives and allows us to experience
guiltiness.
An example which explains the three altogether
Studying
ID: “I want to play valorant all day, I will not study!”
EGO: do it in a balance. Study know and after the test and quizzes play with my
friends.
SUPEREGO: NO! I must study or if not I might not pass the test.

These Defense Mechanisms are strategies wherein people protect themselves
from anxious feelings. These were the major Defense Mechanisms developed by
Sigmund Freud

7. Enumerate and define/discuss the Stages of Development


The stages of development were developed by a psychologist named Erik
Erikson. This primarily explain how people mature by classifying it into different stages.
These stages are as follows
Stage 1: Infancy: Trust vs Mistrust – This stage ranges from birth up to 18 months of an
infant.
Stage 2: Toddlerhood: Autonomy vs Shame and Self- doubt – This stage pertains to
toddler years up to18 months to 3 years of age.
Stage 3: Preschool Years: Initiative vs Guilt – This stage ranges from preschool years
up to 3 to 5 years of age.
Stage 4: Early School Year: Industry vs Inferiority – This ranges from middle school
years from 6 to 11 years of age.
Stage 5: Adolescence: Identity vs Role Confusion – This stage starts from the teenage
years up to 16 years of age.
Stage 6: Young Adulthood: Intimacy vs Isolation – This stage classifies as those of
young adults ranging from 18 years of age up to 40 years old.
Stage 7: Middle Adulthood: Generativity vs Stagnation – This stage identifies does
personas whose age ranges from middle age from 40 years of age up 65 years of age.
Stage 8: Late Adulthood: Ego Integrity vs Despair – This last stage classifies those
older adults from 65 years old until the time of death.
