Theories of Personality
Assignment I
Kindly answer the following questions:

1. Give the Overview of Psychoanalytic Theory?

- According to psychoanalytic theory, the psyche is divided into three functions: the
id, which is the unconscious source of primal sexual, addictive, and aggressive
impulses; the superego, which inserts societal mores and establishes moral
standards; and the ego, which represents a sense of self and mediates between the
present-day realities and psychic needs and conflicts.

2. Summarize the Biography of Sigmund Freud

- Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was an Austrian neurologist who is perhaps most

known as the founder of psychoanalysis. Freud developed a set of therapeutic
techniques centered on talk therapy. His work and writings contributed to our
understanding of personality, clinical psychology, human development, and
abnormal psychology.
He studied with French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot and studied hysteria with
Dr. Josef Breuer. Freud's theory of psychosexual stages has long been a subject of
criticism and debate.

3. Enumerate and define/discuss the Levels of Mental Life

- The Levels of Mental Life according to Sigmund Freud are:
 Conscious level – consists of everything we are aware of, including information
about ourselves and our surroundings.
Example:
Jereme laughed too hard when he heard the rumors about him dropping off his
subject.

 Pre-conscious level - those thoughts that are unconscious at the time in

question, but are not repressed and are thus recallable and easily capable of
becoming conscious.

Example:
Amethys forgot that she misses her dad because she is playing not until she saw
his picture.

 Unconscious - consists of things that exist outside of conscious awareness,

such as many memories, thoughts, and urges that we are unaware of.
Example:
A person can focus on the wind blowing out the window while also paying
attention to his own breathing pattern.

4. Enumerate and define/discuss the Provinces of the Mind

- The Id, the Ego, and the Superego are Freud's three theoretical, rather not
necessarily anatomically based, divisions of the mind. Below are the differences
between the three:
 Id - According to the pleasure principle, the id disregards reality, limitations, and
consequences. Pure id is a wild sexual fantasy or dream. Furthermore, id is what
directs your gaze toward that car in the showroom that you know you can't buy or
your sights at the person across the room.
 Ego - The ego makes more deliberate efforts to avoid discomfort and pain than
the id. This is where Freud felt the real action was: viewing it in somewhat
neurological terms, he described it as critically involved in self-preservation of the
organism through memory, awareness of stimuli, and making changes in the
external environment to gain advantage. Patients with good control of their
impulses and ability to tolerate difficult emotional challenges are said to have
good "ego strength." The ego can also suppress or release some id impulses
that result in tension or relaxation.
 Superego - The superego houses your conscience and is responsible for your
feelings of guilt. With that being said, the superego is what drives men to climb
out of foxholes under fire to rescue a wounded comrade. It is also most likely
what motivated you to attend medical school or become a physician. It's the
repository for your ego ideal, your idealized self, the self you aspire to be.

5. Enumerate and define/discuss the Dynamics of Personality

- The dynamics of personality focuses on examining intra-individual personality

processes, mechanisms, and functioning, as well as how these vary between
individuals. The goal of the study of personality dynamics, as opposed to the
descriptive research of characteristic structures, is to offer an explanatory account of
a person's thoughts, feelings, motivations, and behaviors as well as their patterning.

6. Enumerate and define/discuss the Defense Mechanisms

- Psychological techniques known as defense mechanisms are employed

automatically by a person to shield them from worry brought on by undesirable
thoughts or feelings. Freudian theory states that defensive mechanisms entail a
female distortion of reality in order to help us better handle a scenario.

7. Enumerate and define/discuss the Stages of Development

- Even though development typically follows a pretty predictable pattern, things can
occasionally go awry. Parents frequently concentrate on developmental milestones,
which are traits that most kids show at a given age in their development. Physical,
cognitive, social/emotional, and communication are typically the four areas they
concentrate on.
