Answer Sheet:

I.
A. Intermediate filament--- Provide mechanical support to the plasma membrane where it comes into
contact with other cells or with the extracellular.
B. Centrioles--- facilitate the movement of chromosomes during cell division
C. Lysosome---Contains enzymes that digest material taken into the cell
D. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (ER)--- Site of lipid synthesis: participate in detoxification
E. Peroxisome---Breaks down fatty acid, amino acids, amino acids, and hydrogen peroxide
F. Mitochondrion---Site of aerobic respiration and the major site of ATP synthesis
G. Nucleus---Contains genetic material of cell (DNA) and nucleoli; site of RNA synthesis and ribosomal
subunit assembly
H. Cytoplasm---Colloid that contains water and nutrients and supports the organelles
I. Rough oplasmic reticulum (ER)---Has many ribosomes attached; site of protein synthesis
J. Golgi apparatus---Modifies protein structure and packages proteins in secretary vesicles

II.
A. Carbohydrate--- Adhesion address loci for cells.
B. Glycoprotein --- They help to recognize substances trying to enter the cell
C. Integral proteins--- Channeling or transporting molecules across the membrane
D. Peripheral protein---Transporting to various locations in the cell, signaling, and maintaining the cell
shape and structure
E. Cholesterol---Helps to regulate membrane fluidity over the range of physiological temperatures

III.

1. It is the most accepted model of the cell membrane. It was proposed by Singer and Nicholson in 1972.
It is made up of phospholipid bilayer and proteins.

2. The main difference between the two is that eukaryotic cells have a distinct nucleus that contains the
cell's genetic material, whereas prokaryotic cells do not have a nucleus and instead have free-floating
genetic material.

3. The similarities between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells contain ribosomes, have DNA, are filled with
cytoplasm, and are enclosed by a plasma membrane. The main difference between these two types of
organisms is that eukaryotic cells have a membrane-bound nucleus while prokaryotic cells do not.
