Step 1

Option 2: Smart Choice.

We chose Activity 2 (page1) from the Smart Choice book. In this activity learners are required to
work in pairs and guess what activity the image displays. We believe this activity reflects two of
the ten macrostrategies proposed by Kumaravadivelu.

On the one hand, it facilitates negotiated interaction between students. This pair work exercise
invites students to be fully involved in the conversation so that meaningful interaction takes
placed between them. They are encouraged to give and request information from their partner
motivating in this way turn talking. Since there is no input from the teacher, learners are
responsible for initiating and maintaining the flow of the conversation.

On the other hand, activity 2 activates intuitive heuristics. This exercise refrains students from
consulting the vocabulary box, but provides them with visual data that helps them infer what the
correct answer is. Students are then encouraged to reflect and internalize previous and new
knowledge by relying on implicit input that encourages active and independent learning.
