Assignment: Motion

Pretend you are driving from work to home. Describe your driving experience from start to end with
the use of concepts learned in this unit.
Use the following to guide your thinking:

The distance of my workplace from home is 10 km. Almost every afternoon, I'm too glad to be
going home. At the beginning of my journey I enter my car that is at rest with speed equal to
zero. The first thing I do is to increase the speed of my car from zero.This is me accelerating the
car. The instantaneous speed of my car is about 2 km/h as I slowly reverse out of the parking
lot. My instantaneous speed changes as I straighten up and drive on to the public road.Because
the stretch of road from the front of the school to the stop light is not busy, I continue at a
constant speed of 60 km/h all the while in rectilinear motion. Because I come to the stop light I
decrease my speed as I enter a crowded space. At this point I have negative acceleration
because velocity has decreased. To continue my journey home I turn left and continue up the
road. On my way home I made several short turns. Velocity is changing as I change my direction
home. In addition because I am not traveling at the same speed in a particular time sequence the
type of motion is non uniform. This process continues and after travelling a certain distance I
will reach home and my speed now becomes zero. Naturally on most days I would prefer to take
the shortest route home. The displacement of my journey home would be the square root of the
total distance traveled in the south east direction. However I would not be able to travel this
straight path because no roads are built in that direction.
