Topic: TESDA ‘Production of High-Quality Inbred Rice, and Feed Certification, and
Farm Mechanization’
Farm Mechanization’ is a TESDA course that provides basic and advanced information
about the production of high-quality inbred rice, feed certification, and machines that is
useful for local farmers. The course focuses on three main topics; proper rice handling
from seed to postharvest, land preparation, and uses of different farm machines.
On the first day of training, we are tasked to introduce ourselves to each other for
us to know and get along well throughout the training. Sir Joel started by informing us of
the duration and how will the training goes he introduce the representative from TESDA
that will facilitate the orientation and his co-educators Sir Eric Elmido and Mam Dana
Lomio, that will guide us to better understand the course then after the orientation that is

farmers and increase their income amidst liberalization of the Philippine rice trade policy
including, among other provisions, the lifting of quantitative restriction on rice import
and replacing it with tariff before I think Rice Tarrification Law is bad for the farmers but
upon hearing the provision of the law, I now understand that all those tariffs will be used
to improve and provide assistance like machinery and loans for farmers, especially small
farmers. The lecture continues on Palaycheck, here sir Joel discusses the Palaycheck
system. In this system, every aspect of palay plays a role in how well the crops grow
from seeds, land, planting, nutrient, water, pest, and harvest and he informs us that this
will be the focus of the course then after a small discussion we have a pre-test to test our
knowledge about palay and machinery then we are dismissed that day.
This day sir Joel continue to discuss the Palay Check system he begins with KEY
learn how to choose a variety of seeds by looking at the NSQCS National Seed Quality
Control Services blue tag that ensures the quality of the seeds then after that we are task
to do germination test that we will observe for a week, this activity consumes the entire
week.
The next week, since sir. Joel already discussed Key check 1 he now proceeds to
Key Check 2. “Paghahanda ng Lupa” In key check 2 I learn that we should clean and
organize the canal for good water supply for the field and to avoid rodents from living on
the canal wall and land preparation just like our bodies we need to rest the field for at
least 30 days to give time for the soil to regenerate loss nutrients and we should follow
rules on land prep, on day 1 first plowing then after 7 days is first harrowing and after 7
days second harrowing then after 7 days we can now use the land for rice planting After

This week, Key check 3 is discussed by sir Eric Elmido , KEY CHECK 3:
“Nagtanim nang sabayan matapos pagpahingahin ang lupa” in this topic I learned that on
a farm where land is owned by many farmers there should be an agreement that they
should simultaneously plant crops in the area, it is to ensure that the water consumption is
Key Check 4 was discussed by sir Eric Elmido KEY CHECK 4: Sapat na
malulusog na punla” In this topic, I learned that it is important to have healthy seeds
because the seed is the start of planting so considering key check 1 since we already have
a good and certified seed we can ensure good germination that will result to high yield.
This day, Sir Eric and sir Joel discuss KEY CHECK 5: “Sapat na sustansiya sa
nutrients from fertilizer have timed it shouldn’t be administered just because you feel to
do so because it will lead to low yield if the nutrient from fertilizer is too much. I also
learn how to use a leaf color chart to know if the nitrogen level is enough for the plant
and sir Joel teach us how to compute the right amount of fertilizer for our crops.
that water is vital for rice to grow and be productive because water is what makes the
seeds develop and grow not just nutrients and water is the medium for nutrients so having
enough water for the ricefield should always be monitored. After discussing the water sir
learned that prevention is better than using commercial pesticides to avoid pests because

The next week, after sir Joel discussed key check 7 about pests and disease sir
identify the pest and beneficial pests and to know the diseases that rice possesses. After
four weeks of gathering data for AESA, our group created an AESA analysis and we
found out that there is a presence of rice bug and yellowing of leaves of palay, we come
up with a conclusion that we don’t take action on rice bug because the presence is
minimal and we provide a solution that the field should cut water in half since the
Next week, they discussed the Key Check 8 PAG-AANI and 9 PAGSISINOP NG
ANI where sir Joel teach us to drive a combined harvester and demo the use of a thresher
for us to know how these machines work. Then after that, he gives us lecture on different
farm machine like a tractor, combine harvester, trans planter, and hand tractor.
In our last week of training, we have a recap of all the topics we have discussed during
the training and what did we learn from this and how will we apply this new learning to
ourselves After that recap, In the next day we have an exam to test if we are competent

on Organic Farming. Organic Agriculture is a production system that sustains the health
of soils, ecosystems, and people. It relies on ecological processes, biodiversity and cycles
adapted to local conditions, rather than the use of inputs with adverse effects. Organic
Agriculture Production NCII of TESDA has four core competencies, raising organic
chicken, producing organic vegetables, and Producing organic concoctions and extracts it
also has two electives that focus on raising organic hogs and small organic ruminants.
On the first day of our training on Organic Agriculture Production NCII Mam Levy
provide us orientation and a little insight about organic agriculture production she also
introduces Mam Mary Joy her assistant teacher for the course then a TESDA
representative give brief information on the course on where can we use the course and
how will the course help us on finding work related to agriculture. After the orientation
Mam levy started to ask some questions about what we are thinking about the course then
The next day, Mam Mary Joy start the class by introducing herself again to the
class then we follow and introduced ourselves to know each other after the introduction
we proceed on discussing the common competencies of the course first is the safety

measures in farm operations here she discussed the use of PPE and tool cleaning next is
the use of the appropriate farm tools for the work and last is the record-keeping where I
learn its importance for a farm to proper monitoring and addressing the problem. After
discussing the common competencies, we have a quiz then after that, she dismissed us for
the day.
On the third day, we have a quick recap of the common competencies, then after
that Mam Joy started the discussion by providing us with the PNS for organic agriculture
where we learn that pursuing and adapting organic agriculture is no easy task and that
there is time for conversion of land that depends on how long it been exposed to
commercial pesticides and the registration where there is a license that is needed like the
Negros Island Certification "NICERT". Then she asks us to familiarize ourselves with
common abbreviations like BAFS and BPI. We discussed PNS for four days meeting.
The next week, after discussing the PNS for Organic Agriculture Mam Levy starts
the lesson by discussing the first competency of the course which is raising organic
chicken. In this topic, she provided us a module that has all the information about rearing
organic chicken here I learn that broiler is not part of organic and it cannot be part of
organic agriculture because based on the explanation of mam levy its DNA and body is a
product of human intervention to produce meaty chicken that can be reared for a short
time. I also learned that organic chicken must be reared open and must be fed by natural
feeds like corn. She also discussed that rearing organic chicken is no easy task because it
is more prone to diseases, unlike caged chicken that's why biosecurity is always set up to
ensure that no disease can compromise the flock. She also Identifies some native

chickens that can be used for organic farming in the Philippines like the Paraokan and
In the next week after Mam levy discussed the Organic Chicken we proceed to the
next core competency which is the production of organic vegetables, here we learn to
make vermicompost for our plot that will be used for planting we gather cow dung, fresh
kakawate leaves, dried coconut husk and worms “ASF African Nightcrawlers” for the
production of vermicompost then after we gather all the materials for a week, we started
grinding the husk and pulverize the cow dung. After that we clean the vermi area and
replace the soil then we put the cow dung first then green leaves then last is the coconut
husk then we repeat the process for two more then we add water to provide moisture then
we wait fifteen days for the decomposition to take place before we put the ASF.
organic fertilizer, here I learn how to make compost just like vermicompost the order of
putting the substrate is the same only with no worm involve but bacteria and we do the
anaerobic type of composting where we deprive air flow on the compost and let the
anaerobic bacteria do the decomposition. We waited for another 15 days for the compost
to be ready. After that, we also learn to prepare carbonized rice hull by using a manual
The next week, we are group and tasked to discuss the making of organic
concoctions, on the first day we learn how to make FFJ or Fermented Fruit Juice we used
Papaya, pumpkin, and banana we started by cutting papaya, pumpkin, and banana to one-
inch size then we put it in a container where we mix molasses in 1:1 ratio. The next day
we learn how to make FPJ we used ipil-ipil leaves, camote shoots, and kangkong leaves

just like the FFJ we mix it in a container but a 1:1/2 ratio of molasses, and then we waited
7 days for the fermentation to take place. On the other day, we learn how to make IMO
Indigenous Microorganisms, we started by cooking rice then letting it cool for a while
then we put it in a bamboo then buried it under a tree for 3 days to let it have mold but
don’t continue producing it. The next day we learn how to make Fish Amino Acid we use
fish and molasses in a 1:1 ratio just like FFJ and FPJ we also mix it in a container and let
it ferment for 15 days. On the next day, we are tasked to bring eggshells because we are
going to make Calphos Calcium phosphate we started by putting the cooked peel of
eggshells in a container and putting vinegar in a 1:10 ratio or 1kg of eggshells to 5.5 liters
of vinegar then we ferment it for 20 days. On the next day, we learn how to make Labs
Lactic Acid Bacteria serum here we started by having rice wash cover it and after 7 days
we get 100 ml of the rice wash then we add 1 liter of milk and ferment it for 7 days then
after 7 days, we add molasses to prolong its shelf life in a 1:1 ratio.
The Next week our compost is ready for harvest we now build our garden starting
by making a plot in a measurement of 1x ½ 1 meter long and ½ meter wide then we put
our compost on the top of the plot since we already have our cucumber and chili pepper
we transplanted this crop into the plot then after a day we made a trelease made of
After a week we harvested the FFJ, FPJ, IMO, LABS, and Calphos and place them
in a container and we add labels to better identify the concoction then after we harvest we
have a discussion about the electives of the course which is the Organic hogs, Mam Joy
discussed organic hogs breed and how we will take care this animal. Just like any other

basic and advanced knowledge about Poultry. Poultry is domesticated birds kept by
humans for their eggs, their meat, or their feathers. Poultry production has an important
role to play in feeding the world and, to maximize the benefits, it should be accompanied
by improvements to local health services and holistic programs that highlight the links
between poultry production, human health and nutrition, and sustainable ecosystem
services. This is the reason why poultry is an important commodity for the economy and
by providing training and knowledge through extension we can ensure that we can
On the first day of Poultry Production NCII, Mam Joy commences an orientation
together with the TESDA staff and elaborates some important reminders about the course
then after that she proceeds to introduce our instructor for the course, Dr. Ramil Atienza.
On the next day, the first day of our class since sir Ramil is not available for that
day his assistant instructor sir Joenifer take-charge of the first lesson which is about
introduction to poultry production, and mentioned the core competencies of the course

this are maintain poultry house, brood and grow chicks, perform pre-lay and lay activities
and trim beak after a quick discussion about the meaning of poultry production he
provides a quick discussion on core competencies then dismissed us for the day.
On the second day, sir Joenifer provides a module about maintaining poultry
houses a core competency of the course then proceed on discussing the content of the
module. After that, we are tasked to conceptualize a housing design for poultry and draw
it on paper then in the afternoon we clean the poultry area we conduct this activity for a
week. In this module, I learned the importance of maintaining a poultry house. We learn
to build and conceptualize housing design that is versatile to different seasons and we
understand the importance of cleanliness and setting up biosecurity to avoid the spread of
After a week of discussing the first core competency, we are now ready for the
next competency of the course which is the brood and grows chicks. On the first day
since we don’t have chicks to be used for the competency, we discuss types of poultry
raised and chicken breeds. Then sir Joenifer provides hand-outs about types of chicken
breeds and strains and tasks us to familiarize ourselves with those. On the second day of
discussion the school already prepared the chicks for the discussion, we move to the
poultry area and began inspecting the chicks for defects and sorting the chicks according
to their weight, the purpose of sorting is to decrease the mortality rate and give time for
the chicks to recover from the travel. On the next day, we prepare a brooding area we
used rice hull for bedding and two, twenty-five watts bulbs for the heat source, two
feeders, and a waterer then we let the bulb on for 1 hour to warm up the bedding so the
chicks can adapt more efficiently to the new environment then after that, we transfer the

chicks in the brooder chicks where they will spend 15 days before transferring to the
grower cage. Since we build the grower cage this activity goes for a week. In this
activity, we learn to make a brooding cage, identify good and healthy chicks, and
After a week of doing core competency two, we now start the discussion on core
competency number three perform pre-lay and lay activities. The discussion started with
Sir. Joenifer by discussing the “Do’s and Don’t’s “on layer house when collecting eggs.
Then he proceeds on how to handle eggs to avoid staling of eggs and then continues to
discuss the weight of the egg and its size classification based on weight. After all the
discussion we now proceed on collecting eggs. I learned in this topic that when collecting
eggs we should not make loud noises as it may affect the chicken because the layer is
sensitive to noises then to avoid staling eggs we need to clean thoroughly the eggs and
remove all the moist and dirt on its surface because the surface of eggs has pores that
water and dirt can enter if remain un-cleaned that will result to staling. The classification
of eggs is based on sizes: Jumbo 70g, XL 65g, L 60g, M 55g, S 50, Pullet 45g, and
Peewee 40g> this weight classification is based on Philippine National Standard (PNS).
After the third core competency, we now proceed to the fourth competency which
is Trimbeak, Sir Joenifer discuss the importance of trimbeaking to broilers and he noted
that it is not required to trim beak native and layer hens and proper handling of
trimbeaker and right position of the beak, the temperature adjustment and speed of the
machine. After discussing the trimbeak he proceeds to discuss the different types of
injection administration for chicken then we are dismissed for the day. The next day sir
Joenifer performs the trimbeaking and injection that we are also going to conduct in the
