Driving adoption for Electric Vehicles -

At scale for Personal Mobility

[Grade 8]

Worksheet #1
The rapid growth in India’s urbanization, population and wealth over the last few decades has
increased the mobility needs of its citizens (8-fold growth in the last 3 decades). The demand
for EVs in India has emerged from the contention of addressing this rising demand for
automobiles while keeping a check on the environmental pollution. Despite the Government’s
willingness to promote e-mobility in the country, the Indian EV industry has one of the lowest
adoption rates in the world.

Now, imagine you are being tasked with changing this for the better.

Through this project-challenge, you have to arrive at a 3-year plan to help increase the number
of Electric Vehicles being used for personal transportation in India. Let's get started!

This project will have three worksheets to complete. Each worksheet will have one
main area to research, understand and finally, develop into a plan

Step 1: Let’s begin by understanding why people aren’t buying Electric Vehicles for
personal transportation. Are they expensive? Or are there reliability problems? Do
they not look good enough? Let’s put on our thinking caps and identify all potential
reasons - the more the better. You can talk to few adults and research online too.

1. EVs are more expensive than ICE

2. They take long time to charge battery

3. They are not reliable

4. The charged battery runs out fast, range is challenge

5. Accessibility to charging points/ stations is less.

6. Their batteries are made of rare material, they also face shortage of circuits and chips.

7. Manufacturing EVs also increases emissions, pollution.

8. EV is slower than normal vehicles.

9. If the power is generated through fossil fuels, etc, then EV charging process will
increase pollution.

10. The batteries are temperature sensitive and sometimes catch fire.

11. The EVs are difficult to run in flooded areas.

12. Need standard charging port.

13. Long distance travel and hilly travel is difficult.

14. Replacing battery is expensive.

15. Not enough trained mehanics, repair is difficult and expensive.

16. Difficult to buy replacement parts.

Step 2: It’s time to categorise. Are some of these reasons similar? Can we club them
under one head? Here are 2 categories to get you started. Let’s add more category
names and group the corresponding reasons under them.

Training issues

1. .Not enough trained mehanics, repair is difficult and expensive.

Low sales at present

1. Difficult to buy replacement parts.
