INTRODUCTION
Arts and crafts are important means of expression which communicate views,
ideas and feelings through the use of skills and imagination.

This module will take you to the journey of arts and crafts of Luzon (Ilocos and
Cordillera Administrative Region). You will become familiar with the different designs,
motifs, and history of their attires, crafts, sculpture, and accessories.

ILOCOS REGION

Architecture
Vigan, considered as the
“Intramuros of the North”. It is one of the
best-preserved examples of a planned
Spanish colonial town in Asia. It retains
the Spanish colonial architecture along its
narrow and cobble-stoned streets known
as Calle Crisologo.
Calle Crisologo, also known as
Mena Crisologo Street, is a notable tourist
attraction in the heritage city of Vigan.

Inabel is a hand weaving
technique of the Ilocanos that produced
using traditional wooden looms. The
different designs represent different
meanings: the dizzying “binakol” weave
represents the waves of the sea. They
believed thatthis design protects them
from bad spirit.
The inabel designs are inspired
by natural elements: patterns that depict

Burnay is an unglazed earthen Jar

with small opening.
The Burnay industry (pottery
making industry) in Vigan is also a popular
cottage industry. It is believed that the
natives already practiced pottery making
even before the Spanish colonizers
arrived in the Philippines.
It is used for storage for water and
rice grains and as container for salt, brown
sugar, basi (local wine), and bagoong

PANGASINAN
The name Pangasinan means
“land of salt” or “place of salt-making”. It is
derived from asin, the word for “salt” in the
Pangasinan language.
An ancient kingdom called Luyag
na Kaboloan once existed in Pangasinan.
Princess Urduja, a legendary woman
warrior, is believed to have ruled in
Pangasinan around the 4th century.
Pangasinan was probably connected to
the maritime trade network that once
flourished in ancient Southeast Asia.
Weaving is one of the arts and
crafts of Pangasinan include the smoothly
woven Bolinao mats made from buri or
raffa leaves, and the bamboo crafts
(baskets, furniture) of San Carlos.

POTTERY MAKING

As technology advances, it seems as if crafts such as pottery would become one of

the first endangered arts. Each potter has their own story to tell behind their craft. Often, it
starts from rediscovered joy of creating by hand that keeps them coming back to the
potter’s wheel. No wonder then the right handicraft piece does more than the plate food or
set the mood. To create that kind of experience let us try to create a simple pot.

MATERIALS:

Clay or any materials that you can use to create a pot

Tattooing

Tattooing is another form of art of

Kalinga. Because it usually covers the
chest and the arms, it may be considered
as clothing and decoration.
Whang-Od is the last
“mambabatok” or traditional Kalinga tattoo
artist. She uses a mixture of charcoal and
water that is tapped onto the skin through
a torn end. The painful tattoo technique is
said to be a thousand years old and can
only be passed on through lineage. It is

IFUGAO
Ifugaos who live on the
mountainous part of the Central Cordillera
in Northern Luzon are excellent weavers,
potters, and skillful craftsmen. They are
well-known in carving the mountain slopes
of the world-famous Banaue rice terraces.
The term Ifugao means “natives of

references. The name usually shortened by
locals to Mt. Province.
The province is known for its

mummified bodies, and for its hanging
coffins. Close examination of the

ARTS AND CRAFTS OF LUZON (HIGHLANDS AND LOW LANDS)

SUMMARY
Art is part of the life of the indigenous people of the Philippines. This is shown with the
things that they can use every day which are rich in traditional colors and patterns.

In Batanes, they have vakul which is worn by the Ivatan women to protect them from
the heat of the sun and during the rainy season.

The Gaddangs of Nueva Ecija are known for their crafts and textiles. The Gaddang
weavers are known for their bakwat, a belt used by mothers after giving birth.

Bulacan arts and crafts include the singkaban, pastillas wrapper, and fire crackers.
Singkaban is the local term for bamboo arches. The old Bulacan women usually cut
