1. The inlet and outlet temperature of water in tube side of heat

exchanger is 15ºC and 25ºC.

2. The tube of the heat exchanger used is ¾ inch schedule 40 carbon steel

pipe, square pitch for the condenser and ¾ inch schedule 40 stainless

steel pipe, square pitch for the evaporator.

3. The length of the tube in the heat exchanger is 2m long.

4. UNS G10200 Carbon Steel will be the material of construction to be

used for the (condenser) heat exchangers and AIS Stainless Steel 316L

for the (evaporator) heat exchangers..

5. Condenser configuration is external condenser

and Manufacturing

6. The initial pressure to be considered in the compressor computations is

the ambient pressure.

7. The total drying time (sublimation and desorption) is assumed 180

minutes because the process heats the frozen feed from -10⁰C to -

20⁰C. The time utilized by process condenser is also assumed 180

minutes.

8. The basis for shelf design is CUDRON: Freeze Dry

- Shelf size: 1219 mm x 1524 mm

- Shelf depth: 230 mm

- Shelves spacing: 120 mm

200
- Shelves thickness: 4 mm

9. Freeze dryer have 2 columns inside and it is composed of 2 shelves per

column.

10. Adapted from GEA SmartLYOTM, the material of construction for

shelf is AISI Stainless Steel 316L.

11. The compressor efficiency is assumed 70%.

12. Refrigerant used for Refrigeration System is R-507.

13. The evaporator temperature is set 5ºC lower than the process

condenser temperature.

14. The refrigeration system’s condenser temperature is 10ºC higher than

the ambient temperature. The ambient temperature is assumed to be

27ºC.

E. Design computation

Based on Carlo Vecchio’s Freeze-drying Process Principle and Practice

Study, a freeze dryer equipment consists of: a chamber containing shelves through

which a heat transfer fluid can be circulated, a condenser for trapping water

vapor, and refrigeration system for cooling the condenser.

Condenser Temperature 37⁰C

Based on ASHRAE Refrigeration Handbook 2010, the evaporator

temperature must be 5ºC lower than the process condenser temperature. Thus, the

condenser temperature should be 10 ⁰C higher than the ambient temperature. The

ambient temperature is assumed 27 ⁰C making 37 ⁰C as condenser temperature.

Thus, consider refrigerant used for Refrigeration System is R-507 as the

most recommended for the application of medium and low temperature

commercial and industrial refrigeration
