GAMBLER SUPPLIES

Painting Guide by Minx

Brushes (2 round, 0 round, 3/0 round)

Paint (FolkArt multi-surface acrylics)
– licorice, medium grey, titanium white
– bark brown, coffee latte, cool bisque, parchment
– aqua, patina, moon yellow, daybreak, magenta
Wash (Army Painter quickshade washes)
– dark tone, strong tone, soft tone, flesh wash
– blue tone, military shader, red tone
Metal (FolkArt metallic paint - sterling silver)
Varnish (Testors dullcote)

STEP 1: PREP
– Wash mini with dish soap to remove releasing agent
– Dry completely so excess moisture doesn’t dilute your layers
– Prime all over in grey

Note: I skip priming since I use multi-surface craft paints.

STEP 2: BASE COAT

– Apply 3 coats of desired colours to each section
(dilute paint 1:1 with water)
– Work from inside to outside to account for brush slips
(base > skin > clothes > hair > accessories > tail feathers)
– Ignore finer details for now, will touch upon later

Note: I mix grey with a dab of black to achieve the pipe and boots
colour as pure black cannot be shaded darker. I also separated the
mini from the base to paint underneath, but it isn’t easy to do so.

STEP 3: SHADE
– Apply wash liberally to each section, matching base colours
– Work from inside to outside so that inner sections are shaded
correctly in case of inwards drips
– Reapply a second wash if base colour is still too bright or light

Note: I use dark tone for the yellow tail feathers, blue tone for the aqua
skirt, and soft tone for the shoulder feathers and ivory skirt. Military
shader is used for the base leaves to tone them green.

STEP 4: HIGHLIGHT
– Dry brush mini from top and side angles using undiluted white paint
to guide placement of highlights *OPTIONAL*
– Apply 2 coats of a lighter base coat shade over the dry brushed areas,
extending this layer slightly further down these edge or flat areas
– Apply a second layer over the same sections using an even lighter
shade, focusing only on raised edges and inner flat surfaces

Note: To create lighter shades, mix base colour with highlight colour in
a 1:1 ratio for first layer and use pure highlight colour for second layer.

STEP 5: GLAZE
– Dilute base colour with water in a 1:2 ratio to create a glaze
(use black wash for greys and brown wash for dark brown areas)
– Apply 1 coat of diluted colour/wash over each section, avoiding
recessed areas and inner edges
– Glaze aqua and magenta over sides of hair to mimic artwork

Note: This step is meant to blend all previous layers together nicely and
may not be required if you have better shading and highlighting skills
than I.

STEP 6: DETAIL
– Spray mini with matte varnish so last parts stay shimmery/glossy
– Apply silver metallic paint over chest plate
– Dot inside eyes white, then use a pin head to dot pupils black
– Apply red wash over lips
– Paint base sides black
