1. Recently, I took an online course on Coursera on the topic Country Level
Economics: Macroeconomic Variables and Markets. This course discusses
how macroeconomic variables affect people's personal, professional and
social activities and lays the foundation for analyzing the mechanisms that
influence macroeconomic variables.
2. Personally, I prefer online courses or courses with personal training with a
trainer, or even better if these two types of courses are combined. That is an
online course with a trainer.
Studying in groups is a big minus, the course is designed to meet the needs
of as many students as possible, so this can be difficult. There are pluses -
conversational practice and teamwork.
Individual training has advantages that are important to me - an individual
approach and maximum opportunities for practice.
Online courses also have the advantage of adjusting the schedule, so you can
take the time when it suits you.
3. Yes, in the first semester of study, I took a course to get extra points on the
exam. It was very helpful for me.
Ex. В p. 14
a) Тhe benefits of apprenticeships for the apprentice: improve your service,
save on the costs of recruitment, support employees to develop skills and
knowledge that are directly relevant to their jobs, secure the best new talent
etc.
b) Тhe benefits of apprenticeships for the employer: an apprenticeship is a job
and a learning experience. Training is a part of your job, so you aren't
sacrificing employment to focus on education and skill-building.
Apprenticeships provide you with the benefit of a varied learning
environment that promotes hands-on learning. An apprenticeship can afford
you the ability to work toward a promotion without having to go back to
school.
Ex. C p. 14
1. About 60 per cent of school leavers go into apprenticeship programmes.
2. The majority of apprentices like to work for well-known companies, e.g.
BMW, Mercedes and Siemens.
3. Apprenticeship programmes in Germany usually last between two and three
and a half years, and apprentices sign a contract at the start.
4. Apprentices tend to work three to four days and spend one to two days
doing their vocational training.
5. Apprenticeships are well established in Germany: there even exists a
Training Act including various recognised skills for different kinds of
professions.
6. Germany is proud of the two expressions: Trained in Germany and Made
in Germany.
7. They have been in talks with the (British) government to set up a similar
(dual) training system in the UK.
Ex. D p. 14
The most preferred in Ukraine today is the Work and Travel (W&T) internship
abroad program for students who speak spoken English.
During the STARt Yourself internship, which is offered by the Ukrainian company
Kyivstar, in 2020-2021 (lasted 6 months and ended in February 2021), young
people mastered professional skills in the departments of technical management,
IT technologies, marketing, PR communications, legal support , B2B and B2C
segments.

3. F: they were worried he would be missing out on a decent education
4. F: because he saw an ad in an aeronautical magazine about apprenticeships
with Rolls Royce; he would be going to college, getting qualifications and
spending time working on planes, all while being paid.
5. B: Technical Service, Parts, Marketing, Sales, and the Product department
6. M: Because she's just graduated I finished her degree
7. R: Zurich
8. F: The satisfaction of knowing that you've fixed something. He also loves
working in development and testing because it's innovative and hi-tech.

I think the best career advice is given by Brendan. He says that you should not be
afraid to take risks and you need to do what you like and believe in it.
My advice to Marika is that she should find some kind of internship to gain
experience. You also need to learn to take the initiative and be ready to start your
career from the bottom.

1. I'm just learning, so I can only give a few tips that were advised to me. Be
sociable and listen to your team. Always have a clear idea of the strategy.
No fuss: be productive and result-oriented.
2. The most popular are IT, service, and digital marketing.
3. Firstly, the internship should take place in comfortable conditions for young
people. Secondly, the internship should be interesting, with the opportunity
to gain experience in your field. Thirdly, the internship must be paid. And
fourthly, there should be many options for different internships in the
country.
Ex. А p. 16
1. I think that the new boss wanted employees to start taking their jobs more
seriously and more productively. Having smashed refrigerators with a
sledgehammer, he showed how his employees actually work, that is, they do
not appreciate at all what they sell.
2. I think my first reaction would be stun. I would be shocked by what I see.
Ex. B p. 16
1. All top managers attend a weekly training where they discuss current
challenges and opportunities while working in teams of 6-8 people. They
discuss individual problems, explore possible and best solutions.
2. This allows managers to find opportunities for productive collaboration,
develops management capabilities in general, and also helps to view and
analyze the market from different points of view and from different angles.
Ex. С p. 17
1. Haier's executive education involves training general managers to deal with
a range of threats and opportunities I challenges/ problems.
2. The writer of the article interviewed the staff that run Haier's training centre
and executives who did the training.
3. More than 70 of Haier's senior managers take part in weekly sessions on
Saturday mornings.
4. Executives on the programme discuss possible solutions to problems and
then try them out at work; later they report back to colleagues and perhaps
refine their action plan.
5. Executive teams are mixed up regularly on the course to keep them fresh.
6. Two of the main outcomes are that managers can better understand various
parts/departments of the organisation and how to 'connect the dots'; to
understand Haier's situation as a whole.
7. Participants become more versatile as they learn to face different challenges
and improve their general management skills.
8. The coaches think of ways to check progress; they provide correction and
help executives to refine their action plan.

1. In my organization, I would have all top managers attend weekly training
sessions where they discuss current challenges and opportunities. In my
organization, I would have all top managers attend weekly training sessions
where they discuss current challenges and opportunities. Perhaps we would have
faced such a problem as finding a compromise on any issues.
2. In order not to rely on a coach, you need to develop independence in yourself.
And try to solve all the problems on your own. The correct amount of emphasis
in business communications can help readers easily access the intended
message.

Ex. F p. 17
1. Faculty mixes executives from different functions, business units and provinces.
2. One of the most daunting, however, is…

of the most successful companies in China.

I successfully completed the online course on Country Level Economics:
Macroeconomic Variables and Markets. After passing the course, I can firstly
systematically assess the national and international economic environment in
which I live and work, and secondly, analyze macroeconomic issues using basic
tools.
I recommend this course to others because it not only discusses how
macroeconomic variables affect people's personal, professional and social
activities, and lays the groundwork for analyzing the mechanisms that influence
macroeconomic variables, but also offers a perspective on different parts of the
economy governed by different processes, and to combine these components to get
a richer picture of the whole.
For further study, I can advise you to take as many courses in your field of activity
that are of interest to you.
Ex. A p. 18
The first conversation between Mel Van Der and Naomi Taylor is more formal
than Mel's conversation with the receptionist Pierre. Since Mel and Pierre work
together and they are colleagues who know each other quite well. Mal and Naomi
have apparently never met, so they are more polite and formal with each other.

So that's nine o'clock on Thursday, then.
Not quite, it's …
Is that right/correct?
And the date was … ?
b) You don’t know so well:
Would you mind repeating that / going over that again for me?

Could you explain/clarify what you meant by/when you said … ?

A: Hello, this is Mel Van Der Horst, the Training Manager at Ashley
Pharmaceuticals.
B: How can I assistance you?
A: I have planned a series of courses with you. And now I want to finalise the
details and make some changes.
B: Yes, what are you interested in?
A: The Organizational skills course will be held with the participation of 26
people.
B: Ok. And the date was … ?
A: It starts on May 15th in the evening.
B: Could you clarify on course Leadership skills.
A: Yes, I could. It's cancelled, not enough interest. But could you replace with
Effective communication? Will be held on May 17 the whole day.
B: Оk, so that's on May 17 the whole day, then. I'd just like to confirm the
Assertiveness training course. 22 people will participate. Date May 23, duration
half a day. Is that right?
А: Everything is correct, but 30 people will participate. In the Team building
course, 21 people will participate.
B: Ok. Sorry, could I ask you for the date of participation.
A: Date May 30, duration half a day p.m. What about payment? Would you mind
repeating that that again for me?
B: Of course. If up to 12 participants and half day - 900$, full day - 1,600$. If up to
20 participants and half day - 1,500$, full day - 2,800$. If up to 30 participants and
half day - 2,200$, full day - 4,300$.
A: Thank you for contacting me. I look forward to our next meeting.
B: You're welcome.

I agree with the advice I have read. But I'll add a few more. Please read the letter
carefully before sending it. Double check the email address of all recipients. Don't
start a letter if you don't know how you will end it. My weakness in email writing
is spelling mistakes. And the strength is that I can write information briefly and
simply.

Ex. G p. 19
Firstly, important information is missing, such as the time and date of the first
session. Secondly, the letter is not divided into paragraphs. But at the same time,
there are no spelling and grammatical errors in the letter. There is also important
information at the top.

Subject: Event Staff Development

Hi, Pat

I am writing to clarify about a Staff Development. I heard that it will be held on

May 14th. Is it so? I would like to participate in it.
And could you tell me more about this event. How many people will be at this
event? Where will it take place? And who will be the coach?

Another question I'm interested in is how long will this event last? Will I need to
attend all day? Unfortunately, I have an appointment in the morning, so I will be
free only after it.

I would be very grateful if you could answer these questions for me.

Best wishes,

Maria
