Laboratory Exercise 1: The Parts and Functions of a Compound Microscope

I. Introduction

The compound microscope is an optical instrument use to magnify the image of

microscopic structures which cannot be seen through your naked eyes. There are
several types of microscope. One of these types is the light microscope which is widely
used and available in your laboratory.
Minute objects are magnified by a system of glass lenses. Electron microscope is
another type which requires greater magnifications with a beam of electrons controlled
by electromagnets. The compound microscope is made up of two lenses- the ocular
lens or eyepiece and the objective lens. The eyepiece is attached at the upper end of
the body tube while the objective lenses are attached to the revolving nosepiece.

III. Procedure

1. Study the parts of a compound microscope.

2. Identify the function/s of each part of a compound microscope.

IV. Questions

1. What is a compound microscope?

Compound microscope is an instrument used to magnified tiny specimens on a glass slide.

2. Discuss the uses and importance of a compound microscope in the laboratory.

They are utilized in numerous areas for distinctive purposes. A few of their uses are tissue investigation, the examination of scientific

evidence, to decide the health of the environment, examining the part of protein inside the cell, and the think about of nuclear structure.

Without these microscopes, we would not know around the presence of cells and so would not be able to think about DNA or make

therapeutic propels based on our information of how distinctive diseases or conditions attack cells.

3. How will you handle and take good care a microscope in the laboratory?
Microscopes are need to be handle with care and always need to be covered and store safely.

4. In a tabular form compare and contrast between a compound microscope and a

dissecting microscope.

 Two or more convex lenses.  Binocular head (two separate eyepieces)
 Typical magnification range between 40x and 1000x.  Two separate objectives.
 One objective is used at a time.  Three-dimensional view.
 One objective is used at a time.  Uses natural light from specimen (natural light reflected from
 Available in monocular, binocular, trinocular, and multi-head it)
configurations.  Low magnification range, between 10x to 40x.

V. Conclusion

Therefore, I conclude that microscopes are essential to our evolution, microscopes helped us in many ways that we can’t even imagine. Microscopes

helped us to discover things that we wouldn’t be able to study or see, Microscopes made it possible to study atoms and all these tiny specimens that

can only be seen by microscopes.
