Linking Statement
Injuries are classified as intentional or unintentional injuries. Intentional injuries result from a purposeful
human action, directed at oneself, or to others. Suicide and homicide are examples of intentional injuries. On the
other hand, unintentional injuries are those unplanned or accidental. Examples are bleeding, sprain, burns, and
others. Both can have a short-term or long-term effect on the physical, emotional, and financial aspects of a
person.

II. GUIDED INSTRUCTION

TYPES OF INTENTIONAL INJURIES

1. CYBERBULLYING

 An act of harming or harassing through social networking sites. It may be done repeatedly and in a
deliberate manner by sending offensive or mean text messages, e-mails, embarrassing pictures and
videos or by posting them on any social networking sites.
2. STALKING

 According to US National Center for Victims of Crime (2012),

stalking is a pattern of behavior that makes the victim feel
nervous, afraid, harassed, or in danger because someone is
repeatedly contacting. Following, sending presents, and talking
to him/her even if he/she is not really comfortable with those. It
may constitute a legal matter for the series of actions taken
individually with an intention to instill fear or injury.

3. EXTORTION

 Is an intentional form of injury involving verbal or

written expression of threat or blackmail that something
bad will happen to the victim or to any family members if
the demand is not provided. It is considered criminal act
for it involves money, property, or service being
requested by the syndicate or crime group. However,
extortion can possibly be committed with or without the
use of force or a weapon.

4. GANG AND YOUTH VIOLENCE

 A Gang is usually made up of groups of male adolescents

and youngsters who have grown up together from an
impoverished neighborhood or community. They are
from families having severe problems. Likewise, its
emergence was largely attributed to the large population
migration to the urban areas. The youth who joins the
gang as a place of brotherhood for them can victimize
others this may be rampant in a society that lacks strict
implementation of law and order.

5. FRATERNITY-RELATED VIOLENCE

 A Fraternity or brotherhood is an organization of

people, at a college or university, united in a
relationship with common interests, activity and
purpose. In fraternity, confidence and character are
built, new acquaintances emerge; and a certain kind
of protection, importance, and security is given to
each member. Thus, a person usually joins the group
to be recognized as well as to help and protect each
other from others outside the group.
 in the Philippines, many students are put at a high risk for serious injuries and deaths due to hazing
during initiation rites.

6. KIDNAPPING AND ABDUCTION

 The unlawful holding and taking away of a

person against his/her will to force and
threat is called kidnapping. Kidnapping
was originally used as a term for the
practice of capturing children for forced
labor. Likewise, this may be done in
exchange for a ransom or in connection with a conflict in child custody. It is
considered a separate and distinct crime and is used interchangeably with the term
“abduction”.
7. ACTS OF TERROR
 TERRORISM is the use of violence against
civilizations, aiming to achieve political,
economic, or religious goals or ideology by way of
intimidation or coercion. It can target anyone
because it completely disregards public safety.
These terrorist groups or organization bound to
secrecy, making their opponents vulnerable to an
unexpected attack.

8. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
 An act wherein a person in an intimate relationship
or marriage tries to dominate and control the other
person (spouse or partner) with physical, verbal,
emotional, economic and sexual abuse.
This also includes violence between the same sex
or against the children in the family, which results
in impairment or death.

9. SUICIDE

 It is an intentional act of causing one’s own

death or the act of taking one’s own life
(Carter, 2007). Suicide is a tragic event with
strong emotional impact on the families of
the victims or survivors. In fact, as many as
seven Filipinos commit suicide, every day.
Causes of suicide include: despair,
hopelessness, mental disorders, financial
difficulties, broken relationships, bullying,
poverty, gambling, and substance abuse.
 Suicide is considered unacceptable and viewed as a sin in some religions as
highlighted in the commandments “Thou shall not kill”. Indeed, suicide is an act of
denying God’s goodness in the world. We
should value life because it is a gift from God.

10. SEXUAL ABUSE AND HARASSMENT

 Is forcing undesired sexual behavior by the offender upon the victim.

When the abuse involves sexual intercourse, it is termed as rape and
can be interchanged with the term sexual assault.
