Gritería chiquita
On August 14, the eve of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Gritería Chiquita is
celebrated. It's a feast that was born with a prayer to the Virgin Mary under the invocation of the
Assumption of Mary so that the Cerro Negro volcano would stop erupting, because the volcanic ash
affected the environment and fell on the roofs of houses and buildings, including the roof of the
Cathedral that bore the weight of the ash. As the Virgin intercedes, this day is celebrated in her honor.
As in the December gritería, in this one the traditional gorra is handed out, with the difference that in
this one the majority is given out cosa de horno.
Procesión El Encuentro
From a church, people go out in procession with the image of Jesus, which is taken to a point
in the city, where another procession carrying an image of the Virgin Mary will arrive; that is
the encounter; the meeting of the resurrected Jesus with his mother. When both processions
meet, the people show much joy with songs and prayers. Then, the processions return with
their images to their starting points.The procession of El encuentro takes place on the morning
of the last day of Holy Week, that is, Easter Sunday.
Another custom of the people of Leon is the pilgrimage to the Momotombo
volcano in the vicinity of La Paz Centro and Nagarote, this pilgrimage
commemorates the exodus made by the inhabitants of Leon more than 400
years ago fleeing from Leon Viejo and settling in the present city, in order to
get away from the eruption of the Momotombo volcano.
