5. Microprocessors are tiny computer cpu’s (like tiny digital brains) that are found in many
devices that we use in our houses every day. Microprocessors control how these devices
function.

a. Name two household devices that contain microprocessors. For each one describe
what the microprocessor would control: [4]

Household Device 1: WASHING MACHINE

What the microprocessor controls: WATER TEMPERATURE, VALVES TO LET THE WATER IN AND
OUT.

Household Device 2: ALARM SYSTEMS

What the microprocessor controls: THE MICROPROCESSOR INSIDE A BURGLAR ALARM IS USED
TO DETECT INTRUDERS AND THEY ALSO SET THE ALARM OFF.

b. Explain two ways in which microprocessor controlled devices could affect our
leisure time: [4]
MICROPROCESSORS ALLOW US TO DO OUR DAILY TASKS QUICKER, THIS GIVES US MORE TIME
FOR LEISURE AND TIME TO DO OTHER ACTIVITIES.

BECAUSE MICROPROCESSORS ALLOW US TO HAVE MORE FREE TIME THIS GIVES US MORE
FREE TIME AND SOME MAY USE THEIR FREE TIME TO GO TO THE GYM AND BECOME FIT.

6. Microprocessors have really changed the way in which we socialise and interact with
our friends and family.

Mobile phones now allow us to communicate with our friends and family by just giving them a call
or an sms and it saves time and is a faster way of communication between individuals who are
quite far away from each other.

Social networking sites are getting more popular by the day and it allows friends to have a fun and
easy way to communicate. For example: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and so much more. The
population of these apps keep growing by the day and many more people keep on going on it to
communicate with friends.
