Philippine Health Care System, from Bad to Worse

A country’s health care system is a sensitive indicator of how government values the
health care of its people, underscoring the truism that the people’s general health constitutes the
very foundation of socio-economic development and ultimately, the people’s well-being and
happiness.
Even as a medical student more than three and a half decades ago, it was already starkly
clear to me that the Philippines’ health care system was sick. It was a dual system- one was
private, the other public.
