Characterization and Optimization of Device-to-Device (D2D) and Local Area Network (LAN) CommunicationUtilizing Visible Light Communication (VLC) Technologyfor Indoor Environment
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY OF PROPOSAL
The use of visible light (VL) energy in wireless communication has become an alternative to radio frequency (RF) energy. Apart from the advantages of using VL energy in transmitting information data in enclosed areas, the VL energy can also be used to illuminate the area. The ability of VL energy to only penetrate transparent material can ensure the safety of the wireless communication system from being hacked by hackers who stay outside the communication room. Most of the relevant previous research was concentrated on increasing the SNR, optical power, and data rate, however, less attention on the influence of channel model and its limitation on the communication link parameters, in which arise the multipath fading, and co-tier interference and channel impulse response (CIR). In addition to the effects of shadowing and mobility. The objectives of this research are to investigate the reliability of VLC system based on Device to Device (D2D) and Local Area Network (LAN) topology in the typical room model, to analyze LEDs distribution in indoor VLC systems, and design a receiver filter to mitigate the multipath fading impact and shadowing effects. As the human body is supposed as an obstruction object, in addition to the natural light or sunlight in the room, where different window positions are considered to study its influence on the received of the optical signal. Therefore a new configuration of LEDs distribution and arrangement in optical attocell using direct detection method will be developed with optimized Field of View (FOV) in the receiver, which reduces the multipath fading, interference in D2D and LAN, and shadowing effect. At the end of this research, the interference in LAN and D2D communications topology is expected to reduce multipath fading and shadowing. Furthermore, the optical received power, coverage area, channel capacity, and SNR are expected to improve.
DETAILED PROPOSAL OF RESEARCH PROJECT:
(a) Research background including Hypothesis / Research Question and Literature Reviews Nowadays, the exchange of information in a closed environment for some communication equipment is a hot topic among researchers of wireless communication systems involving academics and industry staff. It is said that the use of wireless communications in enclosed areas has covered 70% of wireless communications worldwide. To meet this demand, the use of RF energy as the source of wireless communication is said has increased higher and almost no longer able to meet the demand for the use of this communication system in daily use. This problem has created a wide opportunity to VL energy based wireless communication technology that is said to contain a wider bandwidth in addition to the use of spectrum that does not require any licensing. This technology known as visible light communication (VLC) system is able to send and receive information signals between several devices in D2D network in indoor environment quite effectively, besides can also be used in LAN. However, these D2D and LAN communication technologies that use VLC technique face some constraints that can affect the effectiveness of the communication system with the reduction of communication signal strength on the receiving system. The main problems in D2D and LAN communication system using VLC technique are the uniform distribution of the light energy strength as communication signal, obstruction of light rays and the effect of light rays that can weaken the effectiveness of the communication system in terms of power reception, SNR and BER.Communications that use VL energy as source of communication in wireless communication network in indoor environment is able to achieve high communication accuracy depending on the position between the VL transmitter and receiver equipment. In the right position, communication system made using VLC technique that involves the communication network of D2D and LAN, in addition to being able to send communication data effectively can also illuminances the enclose area. This will reduce the operating cost of the communication system in term of the use of EM wave communication equipment such as antenna, signal generator and receiver system.
(b) Objective(s) of the Research:
This study embarks on the following objectives:1) To investigate diffused links condition to mitigate multipath effect and how to maximizes the transmission rate in VLC system.2) To investigate on shadowing effect caused by the objects and human movement between the transmitter and receiver in the VLC system.3) To assess signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and acceptable bit error rate (BER) of the VLC system.4) To make recommendation based on SNR and BER measurement to improve the signal strength at the receiver system of the VLC.
(c) Expected Result / Benefit1) Novel theories/New findings/Knowledge
The proposed new setup of optical attocells configuration model is expected to improve the system performance in terms of received power, SNR, data rate as well as BER.
