CELEBRITIES

READING
In this lesson you will practise reading for main ideas.
Listen for Main Idea
Listen to the text and discuss with your partner whether you think the name ‘Blue’ suits Blue Martin. Give your
reasons.
Interview with Blue Martin

Interviewer: Good evening. I’m pleased to introduce the one and only Blue Martin. Welcome to the 1
show, Blue. It’s great to finally meet you at last. I’ve been a big fan of your television shows and
movies for many years now. 1. _____
Blue Martin: Thanks. Ah, yes – Blue is my real name. My mother and father expected that I would be
a girl so they didn’t have any boy’s names ready. The woman in the room with mum at the hospital 5
had the same problem, but she was hoping for a boy. The other woman named her daughter Pink after
a girl in a popular song, so mum and dad decided to name me Blue. I wish I’d been born with blue
hair; it would have saved me a lot of money on hair dye! My natural hair colour is white-blonde, but I
started dyeing it blue when I went through my rebellious teenage years and I’ve never stopped.
Interviewer: Is that right? 2. _____ 10

Blue: No. My parents didn’t want me to follow in their footsteps at all. They’d rather I had become a
professional golfer, because they love watching golf! They gave me a set of junior golf clubs but,
sadly, the game didn't appeal to me so I couldn’t fulfil their wishes. If it hadn't been for the time I spent
on movie sets when I was a child, instead of being at kindergarten or with my granny, for example, I
might never have considered becoming an actor. I acted in a few television commercials for ice cream 15
when I was young, and my love for acting just grew from there. As well as my love for ice cream!

Interviewer: You’ve made so many movies and starred in so many television shows over the years.3.
_____

Blue: Well, yes I have. One of the best things about fame and money is that this gives me the chance 20
to help others who are less fortunate than me. Up until now, I’ve done this outside my acting career,
by giving money to organisations, but I can reveal that I’m working on a reality television show that
is under way at the moment, and it’ll be on screen soon. It’s called ‘True Blue Wishes’ and it’s about
making children’s wishes come true. One little girl has a serious disease, and she really wanted to sing
on TV. She has a lovely voice, too. It will bring tears to your eyes when you see her on stage, singing
her heart out! I really love doing these things for others. 25

Practice doesn't always make perfect when it comes to becoming the next Mozart, a new study suggests.
This may be because some aspects of musical talent are built into the genes(基因),the researchers said. Samuel
Osmond is a 19-year-old law student from Cornwall, England. He never studied the piano. However, he can play
very difficult musical pieces by musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them.
He learns a piece of music by listening to it in parts. Then he thinks about the notes(音符) in his head. Two
years ago, he played his first piece Moonlight Sonata (奏鸣曲) by Beethoven. He surprised everyone around
him.
Amazed that he remembered this long and difficult piece of music and played it perfectly, his teachers say
Samuel is unbelievable. They say his ability is very rare, but Samuel doesn't even realize that what he can do is
special. Samuel wanted to become a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents, but music teachers told him he
should study music instead. Now, he studies law and music.
Samuel can't understand why everyone is so surprised. "I grew up with music. My mother played the piano
and my father played the guitar. About two years ago. I suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being
able to read music and without having any lessons. It comes easily to me--I hear the notes and can bear them in
mind--each and every note. "says Samuel. Recently. Samuel performed a piece during a special event at his
college. The piece had more than a thousand notes. The audience was impressed by his amazing performance.
He is now learning a piece that is so difficult that many professional pianists can't play it. Samuel says confidently,
"It's all about super memory--I guess I have that gift."
However. Samuel's ability to remember things doesn't stop with music. His family says that even when he
was a young boy. Samuel heard someone read a story, and then he could retell the story word for word. Samuel
is still only a teenager. He doesn't know what he wants to do in the future. For now, he is just happy to play
beautiful music and continue his studies.

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a boy from my class walking home from school. His
name was Kyle. He was carrying all his books. I thought to myself: Why would anyone bring home all his books
on Friday? He must really be a bookworm. As I was walking, I saw some kids running toward him. They knocked
all his books out of his arms and pushed him to the ground.
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw
tears in his eyes. I felt sad and I went directly to him.
As I handed him his glasses, I said, “Those guys are fools.” He looked at me and said, “Thanks!” There was
a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude (感激) . I helped him pick up his
books, and asked him where he lived. Then I invited him to play football on Saturday with me and my friends.
He agreed. We played together and had fun on that weekend. The more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him.
Over the next three years, Kyle and I became best friends.
When we were seniors, we began to think about college. We would go to different schools, but I knew we
would always be friends.
As a top student, Kyle was invited to give a speech for graduation. He was nervous when he was about to
speak on the stage. So I said, "Hey, you'll be great!" He looked at me and smiled.
"Being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them." he said in his speech. He talked about
meeting me and being best friends with me in the last four years. When he finished the story, he looked at me

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: “I am blind,
please help.” There were only a few coins in the hat.
A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took
the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would
see the new words.
Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man
who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps(脚步) and asked:
“Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?”
The man said: “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way.”
What he had written was: “Today is a beautiful day but I cannot see it.”

12
Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing?
Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply told people to help by putting
some money in the hat. The second sign told people that they were able to enjoy the day, but the boy could not
enjoy it because he was blind. The first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign reminded people
they were lucky that they were not blind.
There are at least two lessons we can learn from this simple story.
The first is: Be thankful for what you have. Someone else has less. Help where you can.
The second is: Be creative. Think differently. There is always a better way!

69. The blind boy _________ on the street.

When I returned to the common, the sun was setting. The crowd around the hole had increased, and stood out
black against the lemon yellow of the sky—a couple of hundred people, perhaps. There were really, I should think,
two or three hundred people elbowing one another, the one or two ladies there being by no means the least active.
“He’s fallen in the hole!” cried someone. “Keep back!” said several. The crowd moved a little, and I elbowed my
way through. Everyone seemed greatly excited. I heard a peculiar humming sound from the hole.
“I say!” said Ogilvy; “help keep these idiots back. We don’t know what’s in the puzzling thing, you know!”
The end of the cylinder(圆柱体) was being screwed out from within. I turned, and as I did so the screw(螺
丝钉) must have come out, for the lid of the cylinder fell upon the ground with a ringing shock. For a moment
that circular cavity seemed perfectly black. I had the sunset in my eyes.
I think everyone expected to see a man emerge—possibly something a little unlike us earthly men, but in all
essentials a man. But, looking, I presently saw something exciting within the shadow: clumsy movements, one
above another, and then two disc-like eyes. Then something resembling a grey snake, about the thickness of a
walking stick, climbed up out of the twisting middle, and moved in the air towards me—and then another.
A sudden chill came over me. I stood frightened and staring. A big gray rounded bulk, the size, perhaps, of a
bear, was rising slowly and painfully out of the cylinder. As it bulged up and caught the light, it looked like wet
leather.
Anyone who has never seen a living Martian can scarcely imagine the strange horror of its appearance. The
peculiar V-shaped mouth with its pointed upper lip, the absence of brow ridges, the Gorgon groups of tentacles(触
手), the unstable breathing of the lungs in a strange atmosphere, the evident heaviness and painfulness of movement
due to the greater gravitational energy of the earth—above all, the extraordinary intensity of the huge eyes, which
was unforgettable—were at once vital, intense, inhuman, and monstrous. There was something fungoid in the oily
brown skin, something in the clumsy deliberation of the tedious movements unspeakably nasty. Even at this first
encounter, this first glimpse, I was overcome with disgust and dread.

1. Why was the crowd “elbowing one another” according to paragraph 1?

A. There were no officials to control them.
B. They were curious and wanted to get a good view of the hole.
C. They were angry and trying to push people into the hole.
D. They were trying to get away from the hole in fear.

2. The Martian shocked the narrator because__________.

A. it did not look like the other Martians that had arrived earlier
B. it arrived on Earth in a strange and nasty-looking cylinder
C. it was moving surprisingly slowly for a Martian
D. like most people, he had thought it would resemble a human

14
3. A “sudden chill”(paragraph 5) came over the narrator because________.
A. the Martian was heading directly towards the crowd
B. a cold tentacle had almost reached the narrator
C. he saw the Martian’s terrifying features as it climbed out of the cylinder
D. the sun had set and he suddenly noticed the night-time chill

4. What did the narrator find most impressive about the creature?
A. The horrible shape of its mouth and face.
B. Its long and strange tentacles.
C. The way it moved in the Earth’s atmosphere.
D. Its unusual large and intense eyes.

5. The description of the Martians implies that they are _______.

A. cute and charming
B. friendly and cooperative
C. frightening and probably dangerous
D. ugly but unluckily misunderstood
