Comparing and Ordering Numbers

When you compare and order numbers, you use the terms less than (<), greater than (>), and equal to
(=). To compare numbers, first look at the number of digits in each number. Then, compare the place
values of numbers with the same number of digits.

Comparing numbers is an important part of building a student's number sense. Number sense is the
ability for a student to recognize a number, it's value and its relationship with other numbers. It is this
important last component that is built by comparing numbers.
