Instructions: For each of the following studies, decide which type of research design it is and explain
why. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.
1. A researcher conducts detailed interviews with unmarried teenage fathers to learn about how they
feel and what they think about their role as fathers and summarizes their feelings in a written
narrative.
2. A researcher measures the impulsive of a large sample of drivers and looks at the statistical
relationship between this variable and the number of traffic tickets the drivers have received.
3. A researcher randomly assigns patients with low back pain either to a treatment involving
hypnosis or to a treatment involving exercise. She then measures their level of low back pain after 3
months.
4. A college instructor gives weekly quizzes to students in one section of his course but no weekly
quizzes to students in another section to see whether this influences their test performance.

Answer Key
1) Qualitative – Non Experimental – survey because the researchers gather non-numerical data and
they are trying to know through interviews the feelings and thinking of unmarried fathers.
2) Quantitative – Experimental– Pretest Post test design because it is about testing before and after
the intervention and the researcher measured the large sample of drivers and after this they know
what the drivers have received.
3) Quantitative – Experimental – Interrupted time series design because the researcher measures
the low back pain after 3 months instead after the treatment.
4) Qualitative – Non Experimental – Comparative because the college instructor compare the
students who take a weekly quizzes to a student who don’t, the college instructor trying to know
if this kind of trick have an effect on their test performance.

Instructions: Explain your understanding about the text by answering the
following questions on the given lines.
1.Compare and contrast the basic types of experimental research.
2.What is the primary factor in determining whether a research is true
experimental or quasi experimental.
3. What are the implications of declaring what is true by means of a
quasi-experimental research?
4. Which is better between the two types of experimental research? Justify your choice.
5. Do you know somebody who has already done an experimental research? Describe this person
including how he/she carried out his/her research work.

Answer Key
1) The two basic types of experimental research are true experimental and quasi-experimental. In a
true experimental, participants are randomly assigned to either the treatment or control group,
whereas they are not assigned randomly in a quasi-experimental. True experimental is a type of
experimental design and is thought to be the most accurate type of experimental research. It’s
establish cause and effect relationships while quasi-experimental is an empirical intervention
study used to estimate the casual impact of an intervention on target population without random
assignment.
2) The primary factor in determining whether a research is true experimental or just a quasi-
experimental is based on the evidences or proofs and references that the researcher has.
3) Using quasi-experimental research is less reliable than using experimental research. In
particular, if the research is trying to show causality, you may not end up with the correct results.
This is because the difference between quasi-experimental and true experimental is that quasi-
experiments do not have the usual randomization that happens in true experiments.
4) True experimental studies have better controls. Quasi-experiments automatically introduce
hidden variables that have to be accounted for. True experimental are simpler and easier to
understand.
5) Us. We made research about a specific point as far as seeing the impacts of the cycles we will do
regarding the matter and made a speculation about it prior to continuing to the trial, and
subsequent to social event the information of the examination, we utilized a measurable device
to close for our outcomes thinking about the speculation.
