Completed Action Research

“Story Retelling Strategy: Enhancing Basic English-Speaking Skills of Grade 8 STE Students”

I. Context & Rationale

Covid-19 pandemic has made learning that was initially face-to-face learning into

distance learning. Nowadays, our educational system is trying its best to provide continuing education

to the learners in this time of pandemic. A lot of problems arise during the different mode or delivery of

learning to be cascaded to students such as the capability and availability of parents or other people

to serve as teacher of their children, poor internet connectivity, and lack of gadgets to avail online

classes and above all no permanent source of income or poverty which is faced by the majority of the

population of our learners in David Moises Memorial High School. Due to this, the learners suffer and

their learning is highly affected and this create a great impact on their education. As educators we can

help our students to the best of our capability to make them learn the knowledge and skills they need

through various intervention or strategies that would be appropriate for their lesson especially during

this “new normal”.

English is an international language, spoken in many countries both as a native and as a second

or foreign language. It is taught in the schools in almost every country on this earth. It is a living and

vibrant language spoken by over 300 million people as their native language. Millions more speak it

as an additional language. English is learned everywhere because people have found out that

knowledge of English is a passport for better career, better pay, advanced knowledge, and for

communication with the entire world. English is also learned for the literature it possesses, and for the

variety and rich experience it provides. English has replaced French as the language of diplomacy. In

this computer age, English is bound to expand its domains of use everywhere. In spite of that,

Washim (2013, pp.2-10) mentions some problems of English as a Second Language: (a) Language

Psychological Problems, (b) Learning Methods, (c)Problem of Concretizing the Abstract Idea, (d)

Mother Tongue Interference, (e) Lack of Practice, (f) Lack of Interest, (g) Lack of Motivation, (h)

Malpractices in Exam, (i) Mistakes in English, (j) Crowded Classes, (k) Lack in Building

Communication Skills.

• The researcher proposes using the story retelling strategy as an intervention for developing

basic speaking skills English. In this kind of intervention students will gain knowledge and skills by

oral communication skill in particular; as it stimulates students and interest them, that helps to

improve the communication process. Eissa and Safaa (2009) Barzaq (2009) adds that storytelling

also helps to share knowledge from other experiences. This technique is believed to be one of the

entertaining techniques that can be used with learners in order to develop their listening skills.

Storytelling also offers teachers a chance to explore their students’ background experience which

may encourage students to speak.

• Story- retelling as a specific narrative strategy which draws pragmatic language skills, such

as the ability to use extended amounts of language, recall and logically order ideas, recall details,

relate story schema to ongoing events, use appropriate linguistic devices to create a cohesive text,

and summarize information into an intelligible whole for a listener who has never heard a particular

story before. Story-retelling is a productive strategy in which students construct higher-order

representations related to the organizational schema of story grammar as well as the additional

conception of story characters and their mental states - the ability to grasp the intentions, feelings,

and beliefs of others, a notion referred to as a theory of mind.

• With this, the researcher believed that using Story telling strategy as intervention will

developed and improved basic speaking skills in English for grade 8 STE students of David Moises

II. Action Research Questions

• This action research study aimed to enhance the basic English skills of grade 8 STE Students in

David Moises Memorial High School for the school year 2021-2022. Precisely, it sought to answer the

following questions:

1. What is the level of basic English-Speaking skills of Grade 8 STE students based on the result of

their pre-test?

2. What is the level of basic English-Speaking skills of Grade 8 STE based on the result of their

post-test after intervention?

• III. Innovation, Intervention, and Strategy

In this time of pandemic where face to face classroom interaction is discouraged, the

researcher face with problems on how to fully address all the student’s need in English for grade 8

students. With the Modular mode of Learning Delivery, it is hard to fully measure the actual basic

English skills and assess the performance of the students. Hence, the researcher has to find ways

and means on how to deliver the lesson without sacrificing the quality of the results. It is through this

conviction that the use of story retelling strategy as a teaching intervention can fully capture the

extent of learning of the student as this method involves students to investigate, and respond to

questions, problems or to an authentic challenge for a given period of time and will engage them in

solving and understand real-world problem or answering a complex question to develop deep content

knowledge, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and lastly to highlight students communication

skills.

A pre-test will be administered to the targeted learners through their parents and

instructed to let their child answer the test as well as the next activities to be given every week. The

pre-test will be gathered after one week and data will be analyzed. After analyzing the data, the

researcher will study the content of the modules and to achieve the desired results, the researcher

will create a learning material focusing on few selected English literature such as short stories and

poem based on the modules containing the integration of the retelling strategy. In the material, a short

story or a poem will be added and instruction demo that will lead learners to use retelling strategy. By

these, the researcher is able assess students understanding as well as their communication skills.

after which students submitted their story telling activity to the teachers as their returned demo output

where researcher identified the effectiveness of the intervention. At the end of the quarter, with given

interventions students’ will be assess using post-test that will serve as the basis for their final result.

thus, the researcher can identify the sustainability of the intervention.

To solve the problems that arise in an educational system particularly schools that adopted

modular print modality and with students who need more attention and guidance, teachers must

consider this as a challenge and think of a possible solution. And as researcher I see this as the very

reason to used the story retelling Strategy for better result and speaking skills of learners in the

future.

IV. Action Research Method

This action research employed a pretest-intervention-posttest design and made use of a

descriptive method to determine the effectiveness of story retelling activity in enhancing basic English

speaking skills of grade 8 STE students.

a. Participants/Sources of Data and Information

The participants of this research study are the Grade 8 STE of David Moises Memorial High

School for the school year 2021 – 2022. The number of participants will be determined by using their

scores in the pre-test for the second quarter and will be selected using purposive sampling.

The researcher will be utilized the descriptive method with researcher-made pre-test and

post-test questionnaires and module-based Learners Activity Sheet (LAS) with the integration of story

retelling strategy. Data gathered will be tabulated, analyzed, and interpreted using appropriate

statistical tools.

Pre-test. used as the basis of the study. Hand in to their respective adviser and will be

given to the respondents through their parents.

Module based Learners Activity Sheet (LAS) with the integration of story retelling

strategy. sent through Adviser to the student’s brought by parents upon retrieval and release of

modules. Attached to the SLM integrated, activity sheets with retelling strategy guide and lastly,

rubrics for respondents will be aware on how their output will be assess.

Post-test. last activity performed by the identified participants and become the basis of

the result of this study.

The data gathered will be analyzed and interpreted using frequency count, mean and

mean percentage. To describe the level of retention based on pre-test and post-test, the mean scale

below will be used.

result shows that during the post-test for students is “HIGH” with the mean score value of 27.37

(89.88%) for students. The result implies that students’ scores increased significantly after few

interventions given to them. Respondents acquired and mastered skills needed for them to

excel in speaking fluently in English. Therefore, the interventions and strategies given by the

researcher is highly effective.

B. Recommendation

1. Teachers should include vocabulary and reading skills every opening of class.

2. Teacher should give more time for learners to read and analyze certain topic.

3. Teachers should prepare pop sheets for parents for them to guide their children properly.

4. Future researchers, may opt to use other intervention used in this study as a basis for more

disaster readiness research endeavor.
