Dear Readers,

Being a student teacher is perhaps the hardest stage I had in this course. However

my determination to become an educator had helped me to continue and finish this

undertaking. My almost 10 weeks of student teaching made me experience what really

teaching is all about. There were some frustrations and hardships all along but all these

had turned into joy, fulfillment, and wisdom every time I saw my students manifest

learning from me. Teaching students is indeed priceless.

Months from now I will be a full-time teacher and I am so thankful that this

experience mold me into what I am now.

This work is a compilation of all the documents that will provide an overview of

my student teaching experiences.

This student teaching portfolio is a summary of the experience, skills and

knowledge I have gained in this internship program.

I hope that this piece of work will inspire and guide the readers about the teaching

field. May this paper encourage everyone who also to be an educator someday.

EXPECTATIONS FROM THE STUDENT TEACHING PROGRAM
1
2
3
Perhaps the most important and anticipated part of a student’s life is when he is to

apply what he has learned through engaging himself in the field or the so-called

“internship” period. Every student must undergo this stage. Likewise every aspiring

teacher like me must. Just by thinking what is really feels being in the stage, I know that

this will not be easy. This is the real-world, totally different from what I just see and hear.

Nonetheless, one should have the experience not only because he wants to but also

because it is what he must do. First and foremost, my expectation for this program is that

this will really acquaint me with what teaching is all about especially in the field that I

have chosen.

Through this, I will be acquainted with what is the present curriculum used in

public high schools and of course how is a lesson normally being taught. I am hoping that

this will allow me to assume the role of a full-time teacher not just teaching students but

also performing the task that a normal teacher does. I want to experience things like

computing students’ grades and being the one who think of their activities in the class.

Every student teacher like me is definitely has its own expectations in the whole

student teaching program. Much with this is the expectation that I will be send to a school

that will help me learn and be developed while being trained to become one. I believe

that the school had really carefully planned all the concerns for the program. Moreover, I

expect that the school and the people involved especially those behind the program will

also give their full support to us who are newbie in this field. Sixty days of training might
not be that long but someone who values and make his stay worthwhile then I think it

will be enough.

To embark in a new field one must be prepared to face whatever is laid upon him.

As it is said. ‘expect the unexpected’ this is what I have been practicing in my life and

more so here in this new endeavor. So I do not want to condition myself for those good

expectations only, for I know that negative aspects always go with the positive ones.

Inevitably, I cannot avoid to imagine how it is like to teach and how should I deal

to students with different characteristics. But more than that is my expectation that the

cooperating school headed by the principal especially my would-be mentor will be the

persons who will be there to guide me all throughout my training. As an apprentice

teacher, I admit to need a lot of guidance and assistance from him/her. I know that I have

to learn numerous things as I assume the role of a full-time teacher. Thus, it is in my

expectations that my cooperating teacher will have that patient in guiding me especially

in preparing my lessons. In addition to, that he would assist or help me in areas such as

advising on how a topic be easily taught and be more comprehensible to the students. I

want to know how he does it. Likewise, is to help me in the areas of classroom

management and dealings with my students. Things like the way I should be teaching,

how should I teach each lessons like what are the better ways to do it. Lastly, is to really

instill in me how to become an effective teacher since I know that I still have a long way

to go before reaching that stage of expertise. Moreover, I expect that they would

understand me being a practice teacher that is still in the process of learning the know-

how of teaching in the real world.

REFLECTIONS ON CLASSROOM OBSERVATION
1
2
3
I was not really given the time to have a period of observation in the class. I was

right away instructed to teach by my mentor nonetheless I had a better observation

because of what I had experienced. In my more than two weeks of teaching I had much

observation made. First in making the lesson plan now I already experienced how it is

done that it should really follow the sequence of the target of learning competency or the

macro skills. Like very Monday is for listening skill, the next day is reading then

grammar, literature and writing on Fridays. Since third year still uses the Basic Education

Curriculum or the traditional, the outline of lesson plan followed is written in semi-detail.

In writing the instructional objective it could be one or two. The activities instruction

should be clearly stated much with glimpse of the main lesson down to the evaluation.

From the motivation alone there should be an activity already until the application part

and much that it should be clearly written so that there is a clear view of the lesson upon

its checking. In the instructional strategies being used, I have observed this when my

mentor teaches grammar as she is the one who teach it. In here, I have observed that she

utilizes different strategies which depend on the kind of learners she is teaching. In some

sections, she directly brought out the lesson, while in some students who seems not as

fast learners, she uses the inductive method wherein she starts in teaching the supporting

details before arriving into the main topic. According to her, a teacher must really be

flexible with her approach in teaching and I also experienced what she told me. Some

students do not need more introductions on a topic while some tend to be given enough
background of it for them to really understand a certain lesson. In my own experience I

also do what my mentor advised me to do.

The way I have observed my mentor on how she does classroom management; I

can see that she had established that well. She maintained discipline to her students. Just

like students tardiness, she does not allow students to enter the class if they come late,

(English is the first subject in the morning and in the afternoon) yet they could still

participate in the classroom discussion from outside they could just stay near the

classroom window. She imposed it for some students who are not conscious of coming

early in their class. My mentor was also strict when she started the class. When she starts

a lesson or discussion everyone was really paying attention to her and no one seems

allowed to do their own thing. Even in passing their papers, they are obligated to do it

silently, much with finishing a certain topic on that period expect when the lesson is

about grammar which is allotted two successive days discussion. Thus, my mentor keeps

on telling me that I should also do the same with my classroom management.

Since the area of the school is limited some classroom is inevitably surrounded

with noise. However, the students do not have a hard time in focusing during classroom

discussion. Majority of the third year sections I am handling is behaved when the class

begins but when noise and movements of students were unavoidable they became

disturbed. During every activity majority of the students actively participate thus I had

proved that those activities were really a great help for the students not to feel bored in

every discussion. Majority tend to be passive and if there were few who want to recite

they had a hard time expressing themselves in speaking English. Also, students had this

behavior of being talkative and just doing their own thing in the class which was so
annoying in my part. Although they were believed to be not most behaved students they

were still the kind who could be warned, reprimanded and disciplined. They were still

very tolerable and not shall we say the very delinquent or worst type ones. Some students

have the behavior of not following right away but I really see to it that the class will not

end without them during their tasks I want them to do the finish.

It is a belief of the majority that public school students are the hard-headed and

stubborn type. Somehow I believe this but still I saw that it still depends on how they are

being disciplined by their teachers. My mentor had told me that with the kind of

intellectual capacity and behavior they are showing a teacher must also employ a

discipline that would suitable for students like them. Another thing I have observed were

the absences that some students committed. In my two weeks of stay, there was a huge

number of absent students in every class. I don’t know if it happens only because of the

approaching vacation maybe the students tend to feel lazy to go to school, especially boys.

I just have not seen my mentor contacting those absentees or their families which I have

observed from the other advisers.

As a whole, the school is managed well by the head teacher, Mrs. Javier. There

was no recorded incident of student’s delinquency such as cutting classes or trouble

occurrences inside.
SELF ASSESSMENT ON READINESS IN ACTUAL TEACHING
1
2
3
As I begin teaching I have to know first my students whereabouts: their range of

ages, range of abilities and also their ethnic diversity and culture. I was briefed by my

cooperating teacher that third year is still taught using the BEC curriculum and that

learning competencies such as listening, reading, grammar, literature and writing are

taught in sequence. So I studied my mentor’s plan for every competency is its objectives,

so I must be very particular of what I want my students to achieve. If I will teach reading

comprehension skills of course. I have to consider what reading skills I want them to

achieve much more with what product or output I want them to yield. Every lesson or

topic is subject to be taught for just 50 minutes. Thus, I really have to be fast and yet

effective in teaching them every lesson. I must be creative in beginning my lesson. I

should always use well written visual aids for their activity to get their interest and

sustain their attention. Providing them with handouts is necessary since there are only

limited numbers of books. I will also be frequently have them do group activity. To

evaluate them I will use either a quiz or an activity. Furthermore, I will end the lesson by

asking any of them of his thoughts about the topic. Giving assignments will be in a daily

basis since this is necessary as follow up and also for them to have advance knowledge

for the next topic. Checking and collection of these assignments had to be done before the

start of a new lesson. My student’s response and participation in class is already a basis

of how effective I am in teaching them. Moreover, is my mentor’s feedback and

comments that I should really listen to.

DAILY JOURNAL

Day 1: 21 January 2019

This was the day when I and my co-students teachers went to our cooperating

school to formally start teaching. We met Mrs. Mercelita Javier who is the head teacher

of Gov. Ferrer Mem. Nat’l High School- Annex. I was assigned to the English Teacher

Ms. Katherine Quietson. She told me that the subject that I will be teaching will be

English for third year high school students. She said that the third year is still taught

using the BEC curriculum. She added the scheme of teaching is through a logical

arrangement of learning competencies such as listening, reading, grammar, literature, and

writing which comprised the five days of the week. Aside from that, she informed me of

the methods that I should be using and that she wanted to see me prepare a lot of

activities for the students. About classroom management, she told me to be familiar with

the school policies and act like a real teacher in front of my would-be students. I was

asked to prepare the lesson for the next day. Although I did not expect to be teaching

right away, I followed what she asked me to do. My impression of my cooperating

teacher is that she is strict and she wanted me to be strict also to my students since

according to her, they were the kind of students who need stiff discipline. I spent my

remaining time finalizing my lesson plan and right after I arrived at the house I prepared

my materials to be used for the next day. I prepared visual aids and draw some pictures

for my lesson. It was a very long day for me probably because this was my first day in

actual teaching. It was hard but I hope it would get better in the next few days.
Day 2: 22 January 2019

I managed to be prepared on my materials and had studied my topic. Since every

Monday listening is the learning competency that I should teach and where I should

based my lesson I was asked to prepare an audio material for I have to let them listen to a

song. Entitled “ Have I told You Lately “. Unfortunately the tablet (gadget) which I used

could not be heard enough by the students and I was not able to bring an audio speaker.

What I did is sung to them the song, fortunately I am familiar of the song and I sang it to

them. I did my preparations for those five third year sections and thankfully I was done

before 2:00 pm with my last handled section. Although I was having difficulty preparing

all my visual was glad to see that each student was enjoying and excited participate on

each of the activity. My hard work was compensated, to say. I am so tired and felt

exhausted in teaching the first time. Now I had experienced the real world of teaching.

After my class I was given comments by my mentor Ms. Kate which I really expect about

my audio which did not work for the class. She added that I did not follow her instruction

on how to do my visuals and I accepted my fault and asked sorry to her. Moreover she

had given me feedback on how I taught.

I realized that a teacher should always be prepared for her class and to be also

flexible in thinking of making changes when nee arises. I was also told to improve my

voice because it was not heard by the whole class. I kept in mind everything my

cooperating teacher had told me and promise to change those mistakes and unfavorable

teaching styles I had shown.
