Competency Goal 2:

To advance physical and intellectual competency.

Functional Area One: Physical

One of my goals in the functional area of physical is to advance the children's physical

and intellectual competency. This is an important aspect for the age group in my care because

children are growing rapidly at this stage of life and the proper guidance is crucial for their

development. One of the ways I will complete this goal is by implementing teaching strategies,

as well as an appropriate learning environment to promote physical development of children's

fine and gross motor skills. One example of how I will do this is by providing an environment

where children have safe opportunities to develop gross motor skills such as running, walking,

climbing, jumping, dancing, kicking, pushing, pulling and balancing, just to name a few. This

will be implemented with structured activities throughout the day as well as free time. One

example of how I will promote fine motor skill development is by providing a multitude of

materials that support a range of fine motor skills. These materials could be spoons for stirring,

funnels for pouring, crayons for writing, safety scissors for cutting, and playdough for mending.

All examples listed above are how I would advance children's physical and intellectual

competencies in the functional area of physical.

Functional Area Two: Cognitive

One of my goals in the functional area of cognitive is to advance the children's

intellectual and physical competency. This is important for the age group in my care because it

will promote curiosity, reasoning and problem solving which is needed to lay the foundations for

later learning. One example of how I will accomplish this goal is by offering materials and
equipment which gives the opportunity for cognitive development. These materials will

encourage inventive thinking and introduce young children to math, science, technology and

social studies. Examples of materials could be math manipulatives, toy computers, maps and

science toys for dramatic play. Through the implemented example provided above I will

accomplish my goal in the functional area of cognitive.

Functional Area Three: Communication

One of my goals in the functional area of communication is to provide children with an

environment that promotes the children's language through the advancement of physical and

cognitive competencies. One of the ways I will accomplish this goal is by assisting the children

to communicate their thoughts and feelings verbally and nonverbally. I will also provide early

literacy activities and materials while assisting dual language students to make connections

between their home language and the English language. Early literacy activities will be

classroom readings as well as small group readings. Through the implementation of the examples

provided above, I will accomplish the functional goal of communication.

Functional Area Four: Creativity

One of my goals in the functional area of creativity is to grow the opportunities to be

creative in the classroom. This is important for the age group in my care because creativity will

grow the children's physical and cognitive competencies. One example of how I will accomplish

this goal is by having art materials and activities available for the children on a daily basis.

Materials could be blank canvases for an open-ended art activity, as well as multicolored pieces

of construction paper for children to draw on. Another example of how I will promote creativity
is through the implementation of music and dance in the classroom. Through the utilization of

the examples provided above I will accomplish my goal in the functional area of creativity.
