Part II –Topic
Patterns in Paragraph Development
Patterns of Development
 Certain patterns or structures which guide the writers or readers in the way they view the
relationship of ideas presented in a text.
 Help writers or readers follow ideas easily and understand the text better.
 Help in distinguishing major details from minor ones, in predicting ideas and noting details
 Signal words may indicate a certain pattern.
1. Narration
- Is a story written to explain what, when, and who?
- It reveals what a reader should learn
- Use the past form of the verb and usually written in chronological order.
2. Description
- Basically provides details on the idea by using either a sensory or spatial pattern.
- Uses rich descriptive words that put a picture of a person, place or an object in a reader’s mind.
- It helps the reader to be able to envision the picture of what’s the writer’s mind.

3. Explanation
- A paragraph explaining a term or subject that enables the audience comprehends the topic of the
paragraph. This can be done in three different ways:
a) Synonym – explaining the term by using the words that mean the same thing.
Ex. To procrastinate is to slack.
b) Class – putting the topic in a broad category to explain your term.
Ex. A pineapple is a tropical fruit that has an acidic and sweet taste.
c) Negation – means that the writer first says something is not, and then saying what it is.
Ex. A snow cone is not an ice cream cone, but rather a shredded ice syrup treat.
4. Exemplification
- It develops a general statement – the topic sentence with one or more concrete examples, not only do
these examples illustrate and explain the topic sentence, but they also make your writing more
interesting and more convincing.
5. Classification
- This paragraph clearly defines something and place it in a group according to some basis or rule so that it
only fits in one group.
- Classification paragraph sticks to one basis of classification.
- Topic sentence has two parts; the topic and the basis of classification which is the controlling idea that
controls how the writer approaches the subject.
6. Comparison and Contrast.
- The paragraph compares two subjects and discusses how they are alike and list few examples.
- In the contrast paragraphs, two subjects are discussed as how they are different.

7. Cause and Effect


- Cause is a reason for, or events leading while the effect is the results of a cause or causes.
- Analyzes the causes or effects of a certain situation.
8. Problem Solution
- A method for analyzing and writing about a topic by identifying a problem and proposing one or more
solutions.

Organizing a Problem – Solution Essay


i. Introduction
 Identify the problem. Explain why this is a problem and who would be concerned about it.
ii. Problem Paragraph (s)
 Explain the problem clearly and accurately. Demonstrate that this is not just a personal
complaint, but a genuine problem that affects people.
iii. Solution Paragraph (s)
 Offer a concrete solution to the problem, and explain why this best one available. You
may point out why other options are inferior to yours. If your solution calls for a series of
steps or actions to be followed, present these steps in a logical order.
iv. Conclusion
 Reemphasize the importance of the problem and the value of your solution. Choose a
problem that you have experienced and thought about one that you have solved or are in
the process of solving. Then, you may use your experience to illustrate the problem. Do
not focus all the attention on yourself and your troubles, instead, direct the essay to
others who are experiencing similar problems. In short, do not write an I essay.
9. Persuasion
- This paragraph means to convince the reader that your opinion on an issue or subject is the right one.
