VIII. Narrative Report

The Department of Education (DepEd) is bracing for an “extraordinarily challenging school year”
due to the continue outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. As we face unprecedented
time, DepEd still firmed that education must continue.

Reading and Numeracy skills improves one’s thinking and analytical abilities. It helps us master our
language and communication skills. It is one of life’s skill that will help us relate to others and make us
grounded. As teachers, we are the p

rime source in cultivating the study habits of our learners in literacy and numeracy with the help of
our stakeholders and partners in our community. It is significant in our end to give due assistance to

students with difficulty exercising their reading and numerical skills. Thus, Brigada Pagbasa was born. It

part of the preparation for the incoming
school year 2021-2022, Brigada Pagbasa was DISTRIC
highlightedII as one of the Brigada Eskwela’s Program to

address education-related challenges.

It was August 6, 2021, when committees and programs for Brigada Eskwela was presented during a
virtual meeting and August 9 when the respective committees were presented with what program they
are responsible through a virtual meeting headed by our Brigada Eskwela School Coordinator Maam
Aluna Mae Apas. The Brigada Pagbasa was assigned to Mrs. Mary Ann Hermias together with the
Reading/Numeracy Coordinators – Mrs. Danica Payod for English, Mrs. Karen Albarico for Filipino and
Mrs. Noemi Garbo & Ms. Cedny Cano-og for Numeracy. With the task at hand, the coordinators met and
sat down to draw the Project Plan, Project Proposal and schedule of activities. The team decided to
focus on one barangay first and immediately identified those students who need assistance to improve
their literacy and numeracy skills in Brgy. Ipil. Advisers of the selected students were then informed and
were asked to contact the parents and guardians for the permission and conduct of the Brigada
Pagbasa. Announcements to recruit volunteers and partners to help in the implementation of the
activity were posted on social media sites. Group of working college students, alumnae from Ipil
National High school and even teachers from different schools heeded the call to be volunteers.
Selected Faculty teachers also offered their time and effort for the program while others donated
goods , school supplies and health kits for the students selected.

As organized as it may seem for there was a definite plan, one hindrance to all of these is the
ongoing Pandemic wherein the conduct of activities like this has to follow certain guidelines and
protocols before being implemented. August 17, 2021, the team had to sat down with Ipil Punong Brgy
Losauro Juba as to what are the new requirements for the school to conduct such activity as Brigada
Pagbasa. He informed them to secure an IATF permit from the City Health Office. With the assistance of
our Principal, Mrs. Elena Angelita Sios-e, the team were able to draft and submit needed Letters of
Permission to the CHO c/o City Health Officer II Dr. Edmund B. Keirulf, Division Office c/o our ASDS
Maám Lani Cervantes and Brgy Permit c/o Hon. Losauro Juba, respectively.

Having been given permission, we scheduled a virtual orientation for all teachers and volunteers last
August 26, 2021 @ 10AM. During orientation, teachers and volunteers were given names and locations
of students that were assigned to them . Schedule of visitation which is every Friday until September 30
were announced. The tasks/activities to be done during home visits were presented by the coordinators.
Mrs. Elena Angelita Sios-e and Maam Aluna Mae Apas were also present during the orientation.

It was early morning of August 27, 2021, the kick-off of the Brigada Pagbasa Activity. Both teachers
and volunteers went to the Grade 10-Trustworthy room at exactly 8am to get their reading and
numeracy materials and signed our commitment wall before going to their respective assignments. It
was the same schedule every Friday of the week. The activity commenced last September 30, 2021.
Teachers and volunteers were asked to submit their narrative reports on the conduct of the activity.

The Brigada Pagbasa as one of Brigada Eskwela’s program to ensure learners readiness for the the
new school year will not be enough time to transform these selected students to be well-versed
reader/numerates. However, the intervention made during the duration of this activity from August 27 –

September 30 has positive effects to the learners, his/her family and the community as well. Some
learners now has improve intonation and diction in reading, while others have learned to memorize the
multiplication table. One achievement at a time, surely, the efforts placed by the teachers and
volunteers will not go to waste. With the help of the learners’ advisers and continued reading/numeracy
intervention throughout the school year, these kids will soar from “frustration level” in reading and
“non-numerates” in numeracy to “Indepent Reader”and “Numerates” in time.

Summary of Assessment (Monitoring and Evaluation Analysis):

Best Practices:
1. Reading Assessment for learners starts from Elementary Level to High School to properly
identify the actual level of learners reading and numeracy skills to match intervention activities.
2. Regular visits to students at their home.
3. Seeking volunteers through posting in social media sites to assist/partner teachers in the
intervention to the selected students.

Recommendations:
1. Longer duration for the Pagbasa Activity to ensure reliable results and effective intervention.
2. For learners 15 years old and above, the classroom or any safe venue in the conduct of Brigada
Pagbasa since some houses cannot accommodate the weekly visits of teachers.
3. Additional partners to provide selected students nutrients (milk and vitamins), learning
materials or any for them to learn effectively.
4. Encourage more teachers to volunteers as tutors by giving rewards such as service credits and
the like.
