Good day Grade10! How are you doing today? Let’s continue to explore
new things in our Social Studies class. In this week’s lesson, you’ll learn
about the Importance of Studying Contemporary Issues

Contemporary means 'current' or up to date The word 'contemporary' is also

associated with the word 'current’. The word 'current' means 'now' (Almario,
2001)
Issue means topics or any theme of an event that has been talked about
and has a big impact on people's lives.

Contemporary Issues

Contemporary Issues are issues that are happening in

the present. Most of these are issues that our ancestors
did not experience in the past and only now have they
become significant issues. Some examples are climate
change, globalization, and rapid technological
advances.

Perhaps one of the most important issues concerns our environment. It is a big challenge for
all humanity to save the world from its destruction caused by human activities such as
pollution, illegal cutting of wood and deforestation. The desire of every country to
experience prosperity is not unknown to everyone. But development sometimes comes with
the destruction of our nature.
 Citizenship Issue
As a citizen, you should be aware not only of your rights but also of your duties as a
Filipino. A true patriot is those citizens who have love for the country. During this time,
different methods can be used to show nationalism. These will be discussed in the fourth
mark.
 Gender Issues
This issue is perhaps one of the most controversial contemporary issues. When it comes
to gender issues, the issue of sex and gender cannot be removed from it. Same-sex
marriage also remains one of the hottest gender-related issues. Yes and talking about it,
few agree with it.

SKILLS NEEDED IN THE STUDY OF CONTEMPORARY ISSUES

1. Critical
Readable or audible issues need to be reviewed. You should find out if it is true and if it
comes from reliable sources. You should also be careful with fake news especially on
social media
2. Balance
You must know how to look at both sides. Don't jump to judgment without sufficient
grounds.
3. Being Meaningful
You must be able to form an inference, generalization, or conclusion based on the
references reviewed.
